2 Position Title: Reporting Relationship: Mechanic/Operator Reports Directly to the Works Superintendent Purpose of the Position: To perform vehicle and equipment repairs as required, to provide maintenance of such as per established schedules and as required by legislated standards, and to operate a variety of heavy equipment and trucks utilized in construction, snow/ice removal and other departmental related duties focusing on public safety and convenience. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITES 1. Program/Service 1.1 Establishes and upkeeps maintenance and repair schedules for all municipal vehicles and equipment. 1.2 Performs the responsibilities of the position within the legislative and regulatory standards set out in the applicable Provincial and Municipal Acts. 1.3 Performs annual safety inspections on all municipal vehicles. 1.4 Inspect all heavy duty vehicles as part of the CVOR and issue the appropriate vehicle inspection stickers as required by statue and regulation. 1.5 Provides mechanical direction to operations staff regarding equipment and vehicle maintenance. 1.6 Under the direction of the Works Superintendent, performs scheduled and emergency repairs to municipal vehicles and equipment. 1.7 Undertakes various tasks using equipment and vehicles according to qualification, work assignment and priorities. 1.8 Assists with snowplowing, sanding, salting and ice removal operations on municipal roads, parking lots and sidewalks. 1.9 Trims and removes trees and brush adjacent to roadways in a safe and effective manner Protects own health and health of others by adopting safe work practices, reporting unsafe conditions immediately, and attending all relevant in-services regarding occupational health and safety. Follows all guidelines for employees and employers as legislated under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act Maintains and installs signs as directed on roads and streets etc.

3 1.12 Other duties as assigned. 2. Human Resources 2.1 Not responsible for supervising or directing the work of others. 3. Financial Resources 3.1 Not responsible for the preparation of budgets or acquisition of funds. 4. Material Resources 4.1 Carries out work assignments using a variety of tools, vehicles and equipment, plus a variety of power tools. Responsible for the safe and effective use of equipment and selects correct equipment to perform all jobs. 4.2 Maintains equipment, vehicles and tools in safe operating condition by: - following acceptable maintenance and servicing according to service manuals and applicable policies. - performing repair/replacement work - recommending major repairs and/or replacement of equipment to the Supervisor. SKILL AND EFFORT 5. Qualifications 5.1 Possess a Certified Coach and Truck Technician License with one year proven experience in a related position. 5.2 Posses a Class D-Z driver s license or willingness to achieve within six (6) months. 5.3 Possess a Certificate of Safe Chain Saw Operations or willingness to achieve within (6) months. 5.4 Good interpersonal and communication skills with a demonstrated ability to work independently. 5.5 Demonstrated excellent safety record and ability to meet physical demands of the position. 5.5 Ability to work unusual hours in the event of an emergency or unusual weather conditions. 5.6 Willingness to upgrade skills as required as it pertains to this position.

4 6. Physical Skill and Effort 6.1 Excellent physical condition with the ability to handle physical demands. 7. Decision Making and Judgement Work is performed under the direction of the Works Superintendent or alternate, with access to the Operations Manager for advice and information regarding assigned duties. Access is also available to established municipal policies and procedures. Judgement is exercised in: - deciding what maintenance and repairs are required to municipal vehicles and equipment. - working without supervision once the task has been assigned. - notifying the Supervisor of operational problems or issues as necessary. - ensuring that work activity is carried out according to quality standards established by the Supervisor. 8. Interpersonal Skills/Contacts Strong interpersonal skills are required: 8.1 Internal with other co-workers for the purpose of sharing information to complete work assignments 8.2 External with the public to provide information, ensuring polite, tactful relations with licensed mechanics and equipment/automotive sales technicians to exchange mechanical information and to share information regarding vehicle and equipment maintenance and repairs WORKING CONDITIONS 9. Environment 9.1 Exposed to physical hazards and inclement weather conditions such as blizzards, white-outs, ice storms, fog, etc. 10. Control Over Work Schedule 10.1 May be required to work overtime and unusual work hours as required to handle public works emergencies, poor weather conditions and mechanical emergencies.
