PURPOSE Main reason why the position exists, within what context and what the overall end result is. The Librarian is responsible for providing direct library services during public library hours, special library programs, and technical support services at the Iqaluit Centennial Library and Nunavut Public Library Services (NPLS) website in order to meet the informational, educational, cultural and recreational needs of the community. 3. SCOPE Describe the impact the position has on the area in which it works, or if it impacts other departments, the government as a whole, or the public directly or indirectly. How does the position impact those groups/individuals, the organization and/or budgets? What is the magnitude of that impact? Located in Iqaluit and reporting to the Head Librarian at the Iqaluit Centennial Library, the Librarian is the primary contact between the public and the services of the Iqaluit Centennial Library Services. The position holds an important role in training part-time staff regarding library policies and procedures, and sets the pace for all the work being done in the largest and busiest library in Nunavut. The position will be working with the entire cross section of the Library s patrons providing training and leading programs with the public with patrons of all ages.

2 4. RESPONSIBILITIES Describe major responsibilities and target accomplishments expected of the position. List the responsibilities that have the greatest impact on the organization first and describe them in a way that answers why the duties of the position are being performed. For a supervisory or management position, indicate the subordinate position(s) through which objectives are accomplished. Assists in providing direct library services to residents and visitors. Processing library materials borrowed/returned, registering new patrons and linking library materials using the library s automated database (Koha); Assisting the public to locate and retrieve information; providing reference services to patrons through knowledge of the Koha library catalogue, other online catalogues and databases, and using on-hand library materials (books, audio-visual and periodicals), enabling patrons to find the information they are seeking; Assisting and training patrons in how to use the public access computers and assisting with Internet reference questions; Assisting with general computer maintenance, initial trouble-shooting for application problems/connectivity issue for public access computers and following up with supervisors; Following library procedures when dealing with disruptive patrons and building problems and reporting those incidents to the Supervisor in writing; Following library procedures while patrons are accessing rare northern archival materials to ensure that the collections is protected; and Following library procedures for opening/closing the library and setting the building alarm to ensure building safety. Provides access to the library materials. Managing the interlibrary loan requests, requesting loans from other libraries throughout Canada and ensuring proper follow-up so that items are returned on time; Filling interlibrary loan requests for other libraries across Canada; Managing the periodical by tracking and processing new and missing issues; Processing and following up on purchase requests from patrons; Processing of donated library materials, including documentation, stamping, pocketing, creating labels, and proper linking of items to the library database; Assists with de-linking and weeding the collection, as needed, under the supervision of the Head Librarian; and Providing support and updates for designated pages on the NPLS website using the Drupal content management system. Co-ordinates library programs in order to meet the increased number of requests from community groups. Coordinating library programs to enhance community and individual wellbeing through critical questioning and fun appropriate for each program group including: providing orientation tours/presentations during programs; and Preparing and teaching critical information library skills workshops to enable patrons to access, search for, and use information confidently and critically on their own.

3 Assists in the supervision of library assistants when the Head Librarian is off duty. Providing ongoing training and instructions; and Assigning tasks and ensuring that tasks are completed. Performs administrative duties and written correspondence. Opening, sorting, sending mail, photocopying, scanning and ing requests; Recording of accurate statistics of item circulation, reference queries, and patron count while on duty; Shelving library materials correctly in the collection and participating in routine shelf-reading to ensure that the library collection is in order; Accepting payment for lost and damaged materials, photocopies, purchased paperbacks, and issuing receipts, as required, according to Iqaluit Centennial Library policies; Completing attendance, leave requests, and timesheets accurately and in a timely fashion; Being familiar with the Iqaluit Centennial Library Policy and Procedure manual; Attending training sessions to meet requirements and develop skills as necessary; and Performing other duties as required. The incumbent will be working with the entire cross section of the Library s patrons providing training and leading programs with the public with patrons of all ages (involving contact with children, vulnerable persons, or residents in the Government of Nunavut care), and therefore this position is considered to be highly sensitive. This position is also considered to be a position of trust as the incumbent will be involved in the responsibility for the security of public property and assets at the Nunavut Public Library Services Distribution Centre which includes Government of Nunavut hardware/articles which is deemed crucial to perform the duties on the preservation of Nunavut s culture and heritage. 5. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Describe the level of knowledge, experience and abilities that are required for satisfactory job performance. Knowledge identifies the acquired information or concepts that relate to a specific discipline. Skills describe acquired measurable behaviors and may cover manual aspects required to do a job. Abilities describe natural talents or developed proficiencies required to do the job. These requirements are in reference to the job, not the incumbent performing the job. The Librarian must have: Excellent communication skills both orally and in writing are required; Knowledge in operating the systems Koha, Drupal, Wordpress, or similar; The ability to effectively interact and teach library skills to library programs participants who may have a variety of diagnosed and undiagnosed and mental challenges; The ability to maintain strict confidentially regarding all library patrons; Knowledge of the Koha library catalogue or other open source Integrated Library systems, online databases, content management systems (Drupal or Wordpress) and knowledge of the Internet, in order to assist patrons with their reference requests; and The skills to rank materials in numerical order and alphabetical order, which is required for shelving of material, and to maintain orderly files, records and library materials. Attention to detail is essential.

4 Additional Skills & Knowledge: This position requires a general knowledge of Nunavut and the cultural needs of the community. The ability to speak more than one of Nunavut s official languages (Inuktitut/Inuinnaqtun/French/English) would be considered an asset. These skills and knowledge are normally acquired through: The combination of knowledge, skills and abilities is typically accomplished by obtaining a minimum educational level of one year of post-secondary education in a related field, and one year of library experience, or Grade 12 equivalency with two years of library experience. Demonstrated experience working with the public and special program groups with special needs is essential. An acceptable combination of education and related work experience may be considered. Additional Requirements: The incumbent must be available to work Monday to Friday, and during weekends and evenings. Reliability and punctuality is essential as the library being open to the public is dependent upon the incumbent s presence. As the incumbent will be working with the entire cross section of the Library s patrons providing training and leading programs to patrons of all ages, this position will require a vulnerable sector check. 6. WORKING CONDITIONS List the unavoidable, externally imposed conditions under which the work must be performed and which create hardship for the incumbent. Express frequency, duration and intensity of each occurrence in measurable time (e.g. every day, two or three times a week, 5 hours a day). Physical Demands Indicate the nature of physical demands and the frequency and duration of occurrences leading to physical fatigue or physical stress. The incumbent will need to stand while delivering the programs, providing front desk circulation and reference services. Bending is involved for shelving and retrieving library materials. The incumbent may be required to lift boxes of books, which may be heavy at times. There is a lot of walking involved as the incumbent is responsible for monitoring the entire library while on duty.

5 Environmental Conditions Indicate the nature of adverse environmental conditions to which the jobholder is exposed, and the frequency and duration of exposures. Include conditions that disrupt regular work schedules and travel requirements, and conditions that increase the risk of accident, ill health, or physical discomfort. Library materials accumulate dust easily and contribute to a very dry working environment. The incumbent may be regularly exposed to patrons with colds and other illnesses. Sensory Demands Indicate the nature of demands on the jobholder s senses. These demands can be in the form of making judgements to discern something through touch, smell, sight, and/or hearing. It may include concentrated levels of attention to details though one or more of the incumbents senses. The incumbent must be aware of potential problems with patrons who may be overly noisy and/or disruptive to other patrons. The incumbent s sense of smell may be required to detect patrons who are smoking, intoxicated and eating/drinking in the library, which is strictly forbidden. Mental Demands Indicate conditions within the job that may lead to mental or emotional fatigue that would increase the risk of such things as tension or anxiety. The incumbent will be working in a technologically challenging environment. The system response time will frequently be slower than normal, which can cause disruptions in service and frustration for the incumbent. IT infrastructure problems throughout Nunavut may cause additional stress. Working with the public and dealing with special program groups with special needs can be challenging and requires a lot of patience. Dealing with problem or disruptive patrons can cause anxiety and stress. Answering diverse information requests and maintaining a pleasant and patient manner under pressure can be difficult when there are several patrons who require help at the same time. Working non-standard hours during the weekends and evenings in order to meet the public s need can also be stressful.
