1 Paris, Le Paquebot, 3 December 2015 PRESENTATION of the TROPHIES «ENVIRONMENTAL SHIP INDEX» Within the framework of the COP 21, HAROPA representatives will present the ESI trophies, today in Paris, to twelve shipping companies especially invited on this occasion on board the boat Le Paquebot. In order to encourage and support the efforts of the river-sea shipping stakeholders in favour of the environment, the port of Le Havre has been a founding partner of the ESI initiative Environmental Ship Index launched in 2009 with five other ports on the North-European range. The purpose is to encourage shipowners to reduce the air emissions from their ships and to go voluntarily beyond the statutory requirements in order to improve air quality and the environment. The ESI makes it possible to establish a score, for each participating ship, based upon several parameters: the performance of its engine type, the equipment on board and of course the quality of the fuels used. Today, HAROPA then rewards twelve shipping companies for their green calls. The ESI in a few lines: HAROPA, an ESI founding partner An outstanding initiative which is first founded upon a voluntary approach being an incentive for the promotion of cleaner shipping. An environmental index worked out by ports which set up policies of financial incentives. A project initiated in 2009 «in and for» North-Western Europe and created by the ports of Amsterdam, Antwerp, Bremen/Bremerhaven, Hamburg Rotterdam, HAROPA - Le Havre and the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH). An initiative which today accounts for over 38 ports of any size and involves more than 4,000 merchant vessels throughout the world (out of a world fleet of 50,000 ships) ; every three months, there are newcomers. An approach supported by shipowners who have played the game and who freely accepted to go beyond statutory requirements. An ambition whose positive effects are not only for air quality and the environment, but also for the health of the populations living close to ports. 1

2 Five years experiments and positive results leading to think about extending this index targeted so far on ship emissions in order to more globally take into account the environmental performance of ships (waste, crew awareness level, etc.). The ESI at HAROPA s level 2011: creation of the ESI at the Port of Le Havre 2013: extension of the ESI to the ports of Rouen and Paris 2014: charter of joint membership for the three ports on the Seine corridor. 2015: 610 calls have been rewarded since the origin of the ESI setting up along the river Seine. For HAROPA the ESI has become: An advantage for the recognition of its action carried out in the field of air quality and the environment; a symbol of its philosophy which is reconciling port activity, economic growth and the environment. This recognition meant this year: the ESI being appointed as one of the COP21 solutions worth being mentioned for ports; by certifications and world prizes awarded this year to HAROPA : o the Best Green Port (June 2015), o the PERS (October 2015) presented by the Ecoports foundation o the Environmental Protection Award Port (November 2015). The ESI on 2016? The Board of Directors of HAROPA Ports of Paris decided, on its meeting of 25 November 2015, to complete its ESI action by an initiative under the form of a trophy specifically dedicated to the river fleet and targeted for barges and passenger boats. The ESI will thus now reward the cleanest sea and river calls. It must be noted that in 2016 and for all three ports of the Seine corridor, HAROPA will allocate a budget of 200,000 euro to the ESI initiative in terms of incentives and awards. All Seine corridor is now naturally become ESI which could be today the Environmental Seine Index To know more about the ESI: ESI Environmental Ship Index: To know more about HAROPA commitment to climate: _haropa_et_21_partenaires_sengagent_pour_le_climat.pdf 2
