4 Classification of Plastics SUSTAMID NYLONS High Temperature Plastics PBI PI TPI PAI PES, PPSU PEI, PSU PC-HT PEK PEEK LCP, PPS PTFE, PFA ETFE, PCTFE PVDF 300 C 150 C Nylons are also known as polyamides and constitute the workhorse of Engineering Plastics and are available in a wide range of grades. The primary grade is Type 6 and although originally offered in extruded format (Type 6 E) advanced production techniques now provide this grade in Monomer Cast (Type 6 G) format thus providing increased flexibility of manufacture and improved performance. The Sustamid range of Nylons provide optimum bearing qualities with additional grades providing improvements in abrasion resistance, chemical, thermal and low friction properties. Hardness and strength, yet toughness and tenacity are the combination that makes Nylon so versatile and the chosen product for many applications. Standard Plastics Engineering Plastics PC PA 6-3-T PPE mod. PMMA PA 46, PA 6/6T PET, PA 66 PBT, PA 6 POM PMP PA 11, PA 12 PP 100 C Typical applications are journal and slide bearings, bushings, gears, crane sheaves, cams, pulleys, electrical insulators and wear parts. STANDARD GRADES SUSTAMID PA 6 G NATURAL: The standard basic grade which has the optimum combination of mechanical strength, stiffness, impact strength, good sliding properties and abrasion resistance. A high resistance to aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons such as fats, oils and fuels. Natural grade also corresponds to food safety guidelines. PS, ABS, SAN PE SUSTAMID PA 6 GMO (MOLYBDENUM DISULPHIDE ENHANCED): This grade has all the properties of Natural but with the extra advantage of MOS2 solid lubricant to increase hardness, improve frictional properties and abrasion resistance. Amorphous Thermoplastic polymers can be divided into amorphous and semi-crystalline on the basis of their structure Polymers with an amorphous structure are normally transparent and tend to be sensitive to stress cracking. They are suitable for making precision parts due to their high dimensional stability. Semi-crystalline plastics are opaque, mostly tough and show good or very good chemical resistance. Plastics can also be differentiated according to their temperature resistance: High-temperature plastics have long term service temperatures of above 150 C and have a high level of thermo-mechanical properties. Semi-crystalline Plastics suitable for the highest application temperatures (PI, PBI, PTFE) cannot be processed using melting processes. Production of parts is carried out by sintering. Engineering plastics can be used permanently at temperatures between 100 C and 150 C. They exhibit good mechanical properties and good chemical resistance. Standard plastics can be used permanently at temperatures below 100 C. The above pyramid of plastic materials shows a detailed overview of thermoplastic polymers on the basis of these criteria. SUSTAMID PA 6 GOL (OIL FILLED): Also having the properties of standard grade, oil filled enhancement provides a thin film lubricant to the surface of the material but only when subjected to constant pressures and speeds. SUSTAGLIDE - PLUS: A highly modified tribological grade containing a non abrasive mineral filler and specialty lubricants providing increased bearing capacity, higher hardness and temperature stability, increased wear and abrasion resistance together with an extremely low coefficient of friction. This higher performing grade also provides zero stick-slip. 6 7

SUSTARIN ACETAL COPOLYMER P.O.M (Poly Oxy Methylene) Sustarin Acetal is a high crystalline thermoplastic with a high level of stability and rigidity as well as good sliding properties and wear resistance with low moisture absorption. Its good dimensional stability, exceptional fatigue resistance and excellent machining properties make Sustarin Acetal a versatile design material. Stability, rigidity and dimensional stability can be further improved by adding glass fibres as filler, although this decreases sliding properties. A distinction is made between homopolymer (POM-H-Delrin ) and copolymers (POM-C-Hostaform ); homopolymers have a higher density, hardness and stability due to their higher degree of crystallinity. However, copolymers have a higher impact resistance, greater abrasion resistance and better thermal / chemical stability. Main Properties High stability High rigidity High hardness Good impact resistance, also at low temperatures Low level of moisture absorption (at saturation 0.8%) Good creep resistance High dimensional stability Resistant to hydrolysis (up to +60 C) Physiologically safe Slip sliding Properties Sustarin C has excellent sliding properties and good wear resistance. 6 POLYCARBONATE SUSTANAT Polycarbonate is a carbonated Bisphenol A, a transparent (sheet) or semi-transparent (rod) material of high strength with an excellent balance of toughness, clarity and high heat deflection, a versatile engineering thermoplastic. Dimensional stability, excellent electrical insulation properties and inherent ignition resistance are its other outstanding features. Polycarbonate exhibits very high impact strength over a wide range of temperatures from -54 C to +121 C. Humidity changes have little effect on dimensions of moulded polycarbonate parts. Even boiling water does not change dimensions more than 0.001m/m after parts are returned to room temperature however continuous exposure in hot water at 65 C cause gradual embrittlement. Sustanat Rod is a specially formulated steam resistant food grade which will sustain steam sterilisation for up to 100 hours at 120 C making it useful for applications in the medical field. Main Properties Light transmission of 85%-89% (ASTM D1003) Excellent impact strength (250 times stronger than standard glass on impact) Very ductile Excellent sound attenuation and thermal insulation Excellent electrical insulation Chemical Resistance Polycarbonate is resistant to dilute organic and inorganic acids, water, vegetable and silicone oils, neutral salts, aliphatic hydrocarbons and alcohols. Aldehydes, ethers, esters, ketones, perchlorinated hydrocarbons and aromatic hydrocarbons have adverse affects. Alkalines, alkali salts, amines and high ozone concentrations destroy polycarbonate. Extreme care must be taken when machining as conventional cutting fluids will also adversely affect polycarbonate. Water or compressed air is recommended. SUSTADUR P.E.T.P (Poly Ethylene Terephthalate) The molecule structure of P.E.T.P can be produced either as an amorphous or semi-crystalline thermoplastic. The amorphous type is crystal clear with lower mechanical stability and inferior sliding properties. Sustadur is a semi-crystalline type which has a higher level of hardness, rigidity and stability with excellent sliding properties and low sliding abrasion. Because of its good creep resistance, low level of moisture absorption and excellent dimensional stability, Sustadur is ideally suited for complex parts with the highest demands on dimensional stability and surface finish. The wear resistance and sliding properties of Sustadur - TF have been improved, due to a much lower coefficient of friction, compared to pure P.E.T.P by adding a special homogenously distributed solid lubricating agent. A very low rate of thermal expansion makes Sustadur an excellent choice for close tolerance parts and together with its high hardness makes it ideal for machining. It also a has a very useful working temperature of -30 C to +120 C Main Properties High stability High rigidity High hardness Low moisture absorption (at saturation 0.5%) Very good creep resistance Very high dimensional stability Very low sliding friction Very abrasion and wear resistance Resistant to hydrolysis (up to +70 C) Physiologically safe Sliding Properties Sustadur has excellent sliding properties, very good wear resistance and, in combination with its other properties, is and excellent material for highly loaded sliding applications. This also applies tom applications where high levels of humidity or wetness are expected. The modified Sustadur - TF is especially suitable for highly loaded sliding SUSTADUR P.E.T.P (Poly Ethylene Terephthalate) applications in dry running operations due to its integrated solid lubricating agent. Sustadur - TF has a much higher loadbearing strength (pressure-velocity limiting value) compared to pure P.E.T.P and also prevents the stick-slip effect. Chemical Resistance Sustadur is resistant to weak acids and alkaline solutions, salt solutions, perchlorinated and fluorinated hydrocarbons, oils, fuels, solvents and surface-active substances. Strong polar solvents have an irreversible swelling effect. Sustadur is not resistant to strong acids or alkaline solutions, esters, ketones or chlorinated hydrocarbons. Typical applications include bushes, bearings, sliding elements, insulators, cam discs and rollers. RIGID P.V.C (INDUSTRIAL GREY AND CLEAR) Polyvinylchloride industrial grade has excellent chemical resistance, electrical insulation properties and has a flammability rating of V0 according to UL 94 (Underwriters Laboratories) classification. However, specialty engineered sheet plastics that can also be vacuum formed are now available. Below are some of these new generation materials. Please note that these materials are not stock items. Sustavacu A 12% Glass filled Type 6 nylon, a newly developed thermoplastic sheet that allows economical production of high-quality parts based on this well known engineering thermoplastic. The parameters fro processing were determined by in numerous thermoforming tests conducted by the Application Technology Department of ILLIG AG, a world leader in thermoforming equipment. The properties of Sustavacu can be characterised by the following. Excellent thermoformability Very high mechanical strength High stiffness & rigidity Excellent creep resistance Excellent dimensional stability Very good impact strength High resistance to solvents, fuels and lubricants Excellent continuous service temperature range of -20 C to +140 C High resistance to deformation at elevated temperatures Can be friction or heat welded Can be glued Printable and vacuum metallised Fields of application: automotive components such as housings in HVAC applications, bezels, impact covers and fenders. SPARTECH - ROYALITE Spartech plastics are a specialist manufacturer of thermoforming sheet materials in a wide variety of polymers, alloys and proprietary blends designed to suit a number of demanding applications. Below are just two of their specialty materials although they manufacture grades to suit applications such as Mass transit, Aerospace, RV and industrial parts. Royalite R84 is a unique extreme weather resistant alloy sheet that offers a consistent low-gloss level not found with other weatherable sheet products and combined with exceptional high impact strength is an ideal replacement for traditional materials. Features include the following. High impact strength and stiffness Manufactured in 23 standard colours and custom matching is available Available as a solid sheet or cap sheet over ABS 24 25

14 Thermoformable Plastics Royalite R86 is a weatherable PVC/Acrylic alloy similar to R84 but with gloss retention under outdoor exposure conditions. It is cost competitive due to its lower specific gravity which reduces the weight per part. R86 is superior to Korad capped and painted ABS in impact retention plus providing the added benefit of flame retardancy. Both R84 & R86 are made to order. PEEK, PPS and PPSU The properties of these materials are already well known and are now manufactured in thin gauge for thermoforming. Manufacturing First introduced through the acquisition of Parr Engineering over 10 years ago to not only compliment our existing stock shape business but to provide our customers with complete finished component parts. The E-Plas manufacturing division has developed into an integral part of the company. Utilising state-of-the-art C.A.D / C.A.M (Computer Aided Design / Computer Aided Manufacturing) technology and C.N.C (Computer Numerically Controlled) metal and wood working machinery, E-Plas is able to custom machine to your individual requirements. Due to the elastic nature of many of these materials, special techniques are required to ensure that the materials are machined to the required dimension and accepted ISO EN tolerances. Plastic machining has evolved into a specialist field requiring highly trained technicians able to precision machine complex shapes from highly unique materials with special properties each having their own idiosyncrasies. As specialists in this field, E-Plas Pty. Ltd. is able to quote on machined components and fabricated parts based on the most efficient and cost effective methods of manufacturing
