Our paid staff also provide information and support services to people affected by MS, work with scientists and healthcare professionals and raise funds in four national offices and communities across the UK. With branches in every part of the UK the Society s work has inspired thousands of volunteers, supporters and staff members to make a difference to the lives people affected by MS. Purpose To contribute to the overall implementation of the Information Systems team s objectives. To manage the day to day operational work of the team. To oversee the MS Society s data management processes to help deliver our goals To drive improved planning, decision-making and performance across the organisation by developing key business insight resources and reporting systems. 1
As a key member of the Marketing and Communication Directorate management team, to contribute to the leadership, planning and policy formulation of the department as a whole. As a member of the management community to influence and implement the Society s direction of travel to meet our organisational objectives. Key Relationships: Internal The post holder works closely with all members of the Information Systems team; teams that require data (particularly fundraising teams); the strategy and impact team; and the senior management team. External The post holder works closely with third parties that provide data related services e.g. data cleaning. They will also be involved in relationships with processing agencies such as telemarketing firms and mailing warehouses. Detailed Responsibilities: 1. Business plan implementation 75% Planning and allocating work, monitoring achievement of deadlines, and supporting staff as appropriate Focussing the work of the team to implement business plans and contribute to the achievement of the Society s strategic aims and priorities Ensuring a clear focus on driving improvements in quality, impact and performance. 1a) Develop and maintain data management processes to maximise data integrity and usefulness (25%) Lead on analysing and documenting the Society s data needs for the short, medium and long term. Lead on standardising, promoting and sharing the Society s core data definitions, ensuring these are reliable, useful and consistent. 3
Develop organisation-wide policies and procedures for the ways in which the Society captures and uses its data, including data maintained at the Society s local branches and other non-office locations. Maintain these data standards, policies and practices, instituting monitoring and change control regimes to ensure that they continue to meet the Society s requirements. Manage data protocols for third parties who provide data to the Society or process data on our behalf and work with them to ensure adherence. Maximise the volume, quality and accessibility of data at the society by advising on data capture, managing data cleaning, training relevant staff and implementing monitoring processes. 1b) Develop and manage a data request service to meet the Society s data needs (25%) Establish a request ticketing system to control data requests and manage fulfilment. Monitor request fulfilment, prioritising work for the team, providing expertise as necessary and maintaining turnaround times and quality to agreed levels, Action data requests as necessary including extracts, reports, new values and data amendments. 1c) Deliver insight and business intelligence to fundraising teams and the senior management team. (25%) Develop and maintain appropriate marketing and fundraising performance reports, liaising with finance and fundraising staff as appropriate. Collaborate with key stakeholders to establish and maintain data and systems to report on our business objectives, performance and impact. Research, evaluate and integrate external data (eg. standard data/lists from third parties) with the Society s own data to enhance reporting capabilities. Design and deploy a data warehouse as a data repository to support reporting from multiple sources, and to specify regular imports of data from source systems to the data warehouse. Proactively generate and promote strategic insight to support planning and decision making. 2. To champion good practice in data management and processing across the organisation. 3. Experience Essential Substantial experience of data management, including defining data usage policies and procedures. Substantial experience of processing data extracts, preferably in a fundraising context. Proven experience of data analysis, including defining and maintaining data definitions. A proven track record of success in leading and managing a team of comparable size and complexity, to deliver high quality results to deadlines 5
Experience of developing, communicating and implementing business plans Proven planning and project management experience to control effective use of resources Demonstrable experience of applying effective problem solving techniques when the situation demands Desirable Experience of importing and structuring data in a data warehouse, or similar reporting repository. Experience of working with Raiser s Edge Knowledge and skills Essential Excellent knowledge of the use and application of statistical techniques (eg. averaging, correlations, statistical significance). Excellent knowledge of SQL, including the ability to develop queries and reports and to manipulate datasets, and the use of SQL Server Reporting Services. Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, graphs, and formulae.
