Consumerism Activity Nov 5 9:28 AM 1
First things first: In order to fully comprehend the importance of the study on which you are about to embark, you must familiarize yourself with certain words... Define the following terms: Consumerism Capitalism Pop culture Advertisement Economy Medium Nov 5 9:25 AM 2
Consumerism Capitalism Pop culture Advertisement Economy Medium Dec 2 9:11 AM 3
Nov 5 9:24 AM 4
Sep 16 9:11 AM 5
The Answers Nov 5 11:40 AM 6
What's in a logo? Origin Meaning Symbolic representation History Evolution Example: Did you know??? = So, to tie in with your activity, do a quick research on one logo and share! janv. 7 11:05 7
Video response: The Story of Stuff Prior to viewing, it is important to understand that a reflection on the content of the presentation is to be submitted by the end of the period. Therefore, in order to substantiate, take notes during the presentation view full length feature Now that you have watched, offer a response on what you have just seen. What did you think? What stood out? What struck you the most? What was less interesting? Does this video change your perception on our society which is driven to consume? Criteria (as always): ink, double spaced, corrected...if unable to finish, submit next day at the beginning of the period juin 1 09:41 8
Logos, pathos, and ethos: three persuasion techniques Nov 8 8:54 AM 9
LOGOS Logos appeals to your sense of logic. It uses numbers, statistics, definitions, facts, reasoning, expert citations, and informed opinions. It convinces the audience by rationalising the situation. Nov 8 9:00 AM 10
PATHOS Pathos appeals to the emotions of the audience. It uses stories, vivid emotional descriptions, emotional tones, and connotative meanings. It convinces the audience by making their emotions prevail over their rationalizations. Nov 8 9:05 AM 11
ETHOS Ethos appeals to your sense of credibility or trustworthiness. Ethos will use famous role models, a language that is adapted to the audience targeted, and fair minded presentations. It convinces the audience by evoking a sense of trust in the person that presents the information. Nov 8 9:15 AM 12
THE PROJECT Oct 18 11:51 AM 13
OPTION 1 You will create a 1 minute advertisement that will be presented to the class. The advertisement must contain at least one of the three methods of persuasion: ethos, pathos, logos.you can either present the advertisement live in front of the class or a video that you have created. You will then explain what impacts or influences your product might have on its audience or on the planet social, environmental, health, etc. Length: 3 5 minutes (1min 2 4 minutes for explanatio Oct 18 11:53 AM 14
THE CATCH: The product that you will be selling must be something that has not been thought of before. Sell something that no one would ever think of buying: a single toothpick, a pack of used gum. Make sure you have the product approved by me before you begin your project. Oct 18 12:00 PM 15
Option 2 You will choose an advertisement for which you will identify elements of ethos, pathos and logos. you will afterwards analyze the chosen add to see how it interacts with its audience and what social and environmental and/or other impacts might ensue as a result of the add. Length: 3 5 minutes Oct 18 12:00 PM 16
**Given that this option does not require you to create a commercial or advertisement, a more profound and detailed analysis will be expected of you.** Nov 19 11:45 AM 17
66 option 3 You will create a public service announcement PSA that raises awareness concerning a problematic we have seen over the past weeks environmental issues, consumerism, media influences, etc.. You will explain how this PSA might influence viewers to change their lifestyles or to see things differently. Also, you will include one or more elements of logos, pathos and/or ethos within your PSA. Length: 3 5 minutes 1min for psa, 2 4 minutes to explain Nov 17 1:21 PM 18
Consumerism Activity: Step 1 = find a commercial you like (preferably recent) Where? Probably on youtube.com Once you have found a commercial, then: Save the link in a powerpoint presentation you will later complete (on your account) write down what you like about the commercial, what stands out, struck you the most, is memorable, made you laugh, made you think... research the company while researching company, consider its history, annual revenues, and if possible, budget for marketing or publicity attempt to find good and bad details concerning the company or the product in question Obviously, write and save all of these informations, or print out for your files mai 31 11:59 19
TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL AND STRESS-FREE ORAL PRESENTATION Nov 22 1:09 PM 20
1-> Be Prepared - Organization is key - Know your stuff - Don't procrastinate Nov 22 12:48 PM 21
2-> Practice - Try it out in front of friends or family first - Still too shy? Try the mirror. Nov 22 12:49 PM 22
3-> Breathe - Before: Take in deep breaths and hold them in for 5 seconds to help the oxygen flow through your body. - During: Don't forget to breathe! This will help slow you down a little and will keep you thinking straight. Nov 22 12:50 PM 23
4-> Hydrate - When speaking in front of a crowd, water can be your best friend. Dry mouth syndrome often occurs in oral presentation and a simple sip of water can do wonders to help cure it. Nov 22 12:51 PM 24
5-> Bring Support - Visual support that is! A bristol board or a power point presentation can be beneficial for you AND your audience. Nov 22 12:51 PM 25
6-> Eat, Sleep, Relax! - Make sure you eat well on the morning of so that hunger does not become a stress enhancer. Also avoid caffeine to keep from suffering from "adrenaline overdose". - Get lots of sleep the night before so that you're well rested for your presentation - Take it easy the night before the presentation. Don't do anything too stressfull. Nov 22 12:52 PM 26
7-> Don't worry, be happy! - "What's the worse that could happen?" - No one's ever died from doing an oral presentation so you'll be just fine! - If all else fails, just picture everyone in their birthday suits! :) Nov 22 1:05 PM 27
