What s New in SimaPro 8.40?
New Look and Feel Modernized look & feel Some things have been moved or added No major updates to software functionality A number of bug fixes and improvements
Database Updates -Available in SimaPro. Detailed insights will be provided by Blonk, the developer of Agri-Footprint Industry Data new datasets added US LCI -Minor update- corrected water flows
Impact Assessment Methods Updates ReCiPe Extensive differences compared to previous version of ReCipe -Results are not comparable -Implemented as a new method and not as an update of the previous ReCiPe 2008 method - USEtox 2 added a new method characterization factors for existing substances have been updated -about 600 new substances have been added -Includes midpoint and endpoint calculations, but no normalization AWARE -Updated to include all unspecified water flows
Agri-footprint - LCA food database An introduction 10
Agri-footprint 3.0 is a high quality and comprehensive life cycle inventory (LCI) database, focused on the agriculture and food sector. Release of Agri-footprint 1.0 in SimaPro Agri-footprint - Over the years Release of Agri-footprint 2.0 Release of Agri-footprint 3.0 available for SimaPro 8.4 and openlca Expected: Release of Agri-footprint 4.0 Expected: Release of Agri-footprint

Why did we develop Agri-footprint? An introduction Essential basis for making the agri-food sector more sustainable is accurate and clear information; A food specific LCI database did not exist; Need for agri-food LCIs due to; Approximately 25% of all LCAs are agri-food related Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) projects (EU) No opportunities to publish company-specific data in LCI databases; Since 2014 available for SimaPro users. 15
3 allocation options Mass, Energy, Economic Land Use Change Fully integrated 5,000+ products & processes Crops, (intermediate) products from processing, feed compounds, food products, animal production systems Transparent Background documentation publically available Consistent with LCIA ILCD and ReCiPe Critically reviewed By RMIT University (version 1.0) and RIVM (National Institute for Public Health and the Environmental, the Netherlands) (version 2.0) Frequent updates 2014 Release of first version in SimaPro 2015 Release of Agri-footprint Release Agri-footprint 3.0 available for different LCA software (openlca, SimaPro 8.4) 2017 Release of Agri-footprint 4.0 (expected end of 2017) Used for Carbon footprints Hot-spot analyses Environmental product declarations (EPD) Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) screenings (comparative) product Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) Defining sustainable nutrition Widely accepted and used By the food industry, LCA community, scientific community and governments worldwide 16
Agri-footprint 3.0 What s new? 17
Data in Agri-footprint What is available in the database? Scope: from cradle-to-gate Data quality: company specific & literature Seed production Machinery & infrastructure (capital goods) Energy consumption Irrigation water Manure production & application Transportation & logistics Pesticide & fertilizer: production & application Land occupation & land use change Pretreatment & processing 18
Agri-footprint 3.0 What is new? EXPANSION OF SCOPE FOR CROPS The global coverage of the production of crops has been expanded (i.e. more crop country combinations). SEED PRODUCTION Life cycle inventories (LCIs) for the production of seeds were added. CAPITAL GOODS LCIs for the production of tractors, basic farm infrastructure and storage silos are now included in Agri-footprint, and linked to the crop inventories. PESTICIDE PRODUCTION Life cycle inventories (LCIs) for the production of pesticides were added. Three different types of LCIs were generated; LCI s for the production of specific pesticides, for specific pesticide families and for pesticide families. EXPANSION OF PROCESSING SCOPE Amongst others groundnut processing, ethanol production, fish meal and oil production are now included. MORE COMPANY SPECIFIC DATA Data for the production of humic acid production from Vitens are now included in the database UPDATES OF BACKGROUND DATA Most recent FAO statistics for crop yields, and manure application, most recent land use change tool, IFA statistics on fertilizer consumptions in countries. SMALL ADDITIONS AND BUG FIXES Correction of small errors. Addition of transport of goods to the farm. 19
