Leafy Floury hybrids are the newest innovation in silage, with unmatched starch digestibility. Floury is expressed in 25% of the kernels in these silage crops, the remaining 75% are characteristic of Leafy s original softer starch. Silage sample analysis show that seven hour starch digestibility is 5% to 12% higher than current Leafy hybrids

7 Agrisure Viptera: Proven Innovation in Insect Control The Agrisure Viptera trait delivers proven innovation in insect control to help farmers grow more corn. A critical part of today s top-performing trait stacks, Agrisure Viptera provides best-in-class aboveground insect control for maximum yield and productivity. Agrisure Viptera features Vip3A, a robust mode of action that offers unsurpassed control of a broad spectrum of lepidopteran corn pests. Both vegetative insecticidal proteins (VIP) and crystalline proteins (Cry) are derived from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). However, VIPs differ from Cry proteins by binding to different receptors within an insect s mid-gut membrane. This VIP is a testament to the industry-leading agronomic expertise and commitment to cutting-edge research and development that helps Syngenta consistently deliver innovative solutions to the market. More Control. More Insects. More Yield. The Agrisure Viptera trait offers consistent, season-long control of lepidopteran pests that make up the multi-pest complex. These insects are widely distributed across the United States and appear in fi elds throughout the growing season. They are unpredictable, diffi cult to scout and challenging to treat effectively with conventional insecticides. Agrisure Viptera provides growers in-seed control of the broadest spectrum of lepidopteran corn pests, offering a convenient way to prevent and protect against damage due to the multi-pest complex throughout the growing season. Pests Controlled Improved Grain Quality Damage caused by ear-feeding insects infl icts stress and injury on plant tissue, which can allow spores from fungi to gain access, proliferate and produce mycotoxins, including afl atoxin, causing reduced grain quality and profi t potential 1. Afl atoxin can harm humans and animals when found in grain at concentrations above an acceptable threshold. The Agrisure Viptera trait has demonstrated the ability to signifi cantly reduce development of molds and mycotoxins in research conducted by Texas A&M University and Syngenta 2. The breakthrough insect control provided by the Agrisure Viptera trait keeps damaging afl atoxins from robbing growers of revenue at the grain elevator. Where is the Multi-Pest Complex? VIP protein VIP protein binding site Pore Formation Mid-gut membrane Cry protein binding site Pore Formation Both VIP and Cry-bound proteins cause formation of pores in mid-gut membrane Mid-gut membrane Cry protein Pore formation results in insect death The Agrisure Viptera trait is the foundation of a number of trait stacks that provide control of yield and quality robbing corn insect pests. Trait stacks containing the Agrisure Viptera trait control up to 16 above- and below-ground pests. Overall harvest window for OPT Mix to provide maximum quality forage is 5-7 days, slightly shorter than Green River Mix. Yields of ton DM can be achieved with good fertility. Spring Forage Grain Mix 50% Forage Oats + 50% Trical 2700 Triticale Seeding rate 100#/acre. Harvest at mid to late boot stage for silage or bales. Optimum grazing after reaching inches in height. Will maximize yield with units of Nitrogen, but be cautious with higher nitrogen levels when used for early grazing applications. Trical 2700 Triticale A widely adapted spring triticale for grazing, silage and boot stage hay. Outstanding digestibility (IVTD), crude protein content. Can be used as a nurse crop with alfalfa due to a stall phase in the growth pattern to not overshadow the underseeded crop. Superior tolerance to disease, lagoon water and can withstand tough early season growing conditions. Trical 2700 can be planted alone or matches very well maturity wise with Arvika forage peas to increase palatability and protein levels. Arvika Forage Peas A forage specific pea with an extremely wide leaf. Extremely high in forage yield, quality and palatability Arvika forage peas can test over 25% protein by themselves. Very good companion with Forage oats or Triticale to increase yield, protein % and palatability. Due to size of the Arvika forage pea plant, it is recommended to use as no more than 50% peas in any mix to aid in standability of the crop. Inoculant is recommended when planting for grain but is not necessary when being taken as a forage crop alone or in combination with a small grain

11 ADVANTAGES OF TRITICALE as a forage Triticale (trit-ah-kay-lee) is a hybrid cross of wheat and rye developed in the late 19th century in Europe. A hybrid of wheat and rye, triticale combines the beneficial properties of wheat--high yield potential, good grain quality, and disease resistance--with the beneficial properties of rye--harsh climate tolerance, and low requirements for soil fertility. Since its development triticale has been utilized for its high quality feed potential both as a grain crop and as a forage crop. Keys to Winter Forage Success: Use only quality seed Trical 815 FALL FORAGE Trical 815 is an awned winter annual cereal forage. Trical 815 has a very high leaf-to-stem ratio and exhibits a very dense canopy of long leaves designed to be used in double crop systems that intend to maximize annual forage production Trical 815 will extract and assimilate large amounts of nitrogen and phosphorous making it an excellent tool for managing dairy waste products. Trical 815 is a very good candidate for double cropping with corn silage rotations where growing degree days will allow. A 4 ton crop with 14% Crude Protein removes 180# Nitrogen/ acre, in addition to 60# Phosphorous/ acre, and 310# Potassium/ acre. TRICAL 815 Triticale DM Protein ADF NDF Lignin Sugar Starch Flag leaf, same day haylage Plant winter triticale forage 10 days to two weeks before your LOCAL wheat planting date Accurate seeding is vital. Seed 100 to 120 lbs. per acre with a grain drill at a depth of 1 ½ inches. Use a drill setting approximately 10% higher than wheat to account for the larger seed size of the triticale. Drill triticale 1.25 inches deep Fertility Application of 40 to 80 lbs. of both actual P and actual K is a very general recommendation. Soil test to determine more specific recommendations. Best to apply P and K in the fall. Nitrogen is very important. At least 100 lbs. of available N is needed. N needs are seldom met from manure alone. Much of your fall nutrients can be supplied by manure. Spring applied nutrients: Nitrogen (40-60 units) and Sulfur (10-20 units) are very important for optimum protein levels. If applied at green up this can also enhance timely harvest to help get corn planted sooner in spring. Harvest: For energy levels equal or better than corn silage, harvest at stage 9 when flag leaf is fully emerged-no heads. Boot stage is an old concept when cows produced 12,000 lbs of milk/year. Flag leaf is what high producing cows need. Cut triticale, then cool season grasses, then alfalfa grass mixes and end with clear alfalfa. All will be similar high feed quality in the same storage. Harvest methods: Fall-planted triticale can be spring grazed, ensiled by chopping, or round bale/large square bale wrapped ensiling. Feed management: Base the ration on an IN-VITRO analysis. Normal NIR analysis will underestimate the energy level. DOUBLE CROPPING DOUBLE CROPPING-MAKING MONEY FOR YOU IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS - Is Longer Season Corn the Answer To High Yields? Considerable amount of our research has shown that planting between the 1st and the 15th of September in the Albany NY area is critical for optimizing winter forage (triticale) yields the next spring. This raises a concern with farmers who have been ingrained with the idea that longer season corns ALWAYS gives more yield. Anything shorter than what they used to grow, in order to meet the planting schedule for winter forage, would appear to be a net loss. Fortunately we have multiple years of research at Cornell by Dr. Cox and Dr. Cherney on silage yields in NY. Dr. Cox states that on an AVERAGE, there is ¾ a ton of 35% dry matter silage lost for every 5 day shorter variety you grow. This does NOT occur every year, but on average. Some years shorter season is equal or better and long season is stuck out there until November waiting to dry down. Some years dry spells nail the short season corn but late rains give good yields to longer season corn. Using this average, if we switch from a 105 day corn to an 85 day, we are on average losing 3 tons corn silage/acre. 3 ton/acre loss x 35% dry matter equals 1.05 Ton DM/A lost from shorter season corn ton of DM/A lost x 3,700 lbs of milk potential/ton (assuming a good corn silage), this equals 3,780 lbs of milk lost/acre from the shorter season corn. Planting winter forage within the Sept 1 Sept 15 optimum window and with lbs of N at planting plus spring topdress, we normally get 6 12 Tons of winter forage/a. This equals tons of DM/A; 4,200 lb milk potential/ ton DM = 8,400; 17,640 lb. milk /A gain from winter forage to replace the 3,780 lbs of milk/a loss from shorter season corn. 14 Be Informed Think Before You Bin-Run Soybeans PATENTS AND ROUNDUP READY SEEDS Do You Know the Rules Around Planting Roundup Ready Soybeans Post Patent? The U.S. patent on the original Roundup Ready soybean trait expired in 2015, and that means there are changes to what soybean seed products U.S. growers can legally save and plant. Did you know that even though the Roundup Ready soybean biotech trait patent has expired, most Roundup Ready seed in the United States may still be covered by other forms of intellectual property? Be informed. Ask before you plant. Check with your local seed provider to see if the original Roundup Ready soybean products you harvested are eligible to be legally saved and planted in 2015 on your farm. If so, ask your dealer for a license that clarifies your rights to legally save and plant those soybeans. C R O P M A N A G E M E N T S O L U T I O N S CLEAN FIELDS. Products should be selected based on cold or winter hardiness as suitable products for use in one area/region may not survive or perform well in another area/region. When selecting an Alfalfa product, consider both fall dormancy and winter hardiness ratings, as these ratings are not the same and should not be substituted for each other. Alfalfa Fall Dormancy Fall dormancy relates to how soon an alfalfa product stops growing in the fall and how early it begins growing in the spring or late winter. Non-dormant alfalfa products have quicker shoot elongation after harvest and erect shoot growth in autumn. In contrast, fall dormant products produce shorter, prostrate shoots in the fall and have slower shoot elongation after harvest. 1 It is the length of the season that is determined by a height measurement. Higher fall dormancy scores indicate that there is more fall growth (Table 1). The length of dormancy affects yield as well as winter hardiness. Because fall dormant products have slower regrowth after harvest, the number of cuttings per year and yield may be reduced. Alfalfa Winter Hardiness In the northern United States, winter hardiness is the primary factor in determining alfalfa stand longevity and forage yield. 2 Winter hardiness is determined by the ability of an alfalfa product to withstand winter cold temperatures. The winter hardiness rating helps indicates how well a product will survive winter temperatures. The lower the winter hardiness rating the greater ability of a product to withstand winter. Table 1. Although fall dormancy is somewhat related to winter hardiness, it is not an accurate measure of it. Winter hardiness should be considered as a separate characteristic from fall dormancy when selecting alfalfa products. Table 2. 18 UTILIZING TECHNOLOGY GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING SEED TECHNOLOGY Roundup Ready Corn 2 crops contain genes that confer tolerance to glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup agricultural herbicides. GT provides tolerance to in-crop applications of glyphosate-based herbicides while offering growers a full range of assurances and the freedom to choose their preferred glyphosate brand. GT3000 the ultimate in yield protection guards against both corn borer and corn rootworm, with tolerance to in-season applications of both glyphosate and glufosinate herbicides. Artesian corn hybrids maximize yield when it rains and increase yield when it doesn t. Built using scientifically selected genes, this elite class of high-performing hybrids can respond to water stress with multiple modes of action and at virtually any stage of growth managing gaps in rainfall throughout the season. Artesian corn hybrids can help growers achieve improved yield consistency by converting water to grain more effectively than other hybrids. Agrisure Viptera 3110 trait stack provides season-long control from the following insects: European corn borer, southwestern corn borer, southern cornstalk borer, corn earworm, fall armyworm, dingy cutworm, beet armyworm, black cutworm, western bean cutworm, sugarcane borer, common stalk borer, and herbicide flexibility with both glyphosate and glufosinate tolerance. Note: Agrisure Viptera 3110 requires a 20% structured adjacent refuge. Agrisure 3120 E-Z Refuge has two modes of action against corn borer; control of ear-feeding insects with glyphosate tolerance as an integrated refuge product. VT Double PRO corn contains dual modes of action for maximum protection against corn earworm and other above-ground pests, like European and Southwestern corn borers and fall armyworm. For the highest yield potential, get the control that VT Double PRO corn products can deliver. It s the first double-stacked corn trait with two ways to control corn earworm and other ear-feeding insects VT Triple PRO offers two modes of action for controlling above-ground insects plus an additional mode of action for below-ground insect protection. High Yield Protection Against Above- and Below-Ground Insects. Dual modes of action protect against corn earworm and other above-ground, ear-feeding insects, like European and Southern corn borers and fall armyworm. An additional single mode of action provides protection from below-ground insects like corn rootworm Genuity SmartStax RIB Complete offers two built-in modes of action that deliver maximum control of both corn rootworm and corn earworm, as well as the most above- and below-ground insect control. Also, since it s a RIB Complete brand corn blend, it has a mix of 95% Bt-traited seed and 5% refuge seed right in the bag. Genuity Roundup Ready 2 Yield second generation Roundup Ready soybean technology, which offers higher yield potential than first generation technology. Roundup Ready 2 Xtend soybeans are the industry s first biotech-stacked soybean trait with both dicamba and glyphosate herbicide tolerance. Roundup Ready 2 Xtend is built on the high-yielding Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybean technology LL-LibertyLink Seed products with the LibertyLink (LL) trait are resistant to the herbicide glufosinate ammonium, an alternative to glyphosate in corn, and combine with high yield genetics with the powerful, non-selective, postemergent weed control of Ignite herbicide for optimum yield and excellent weed control. LibertyLink, Ignite and the Water Droplet logo are registered trademarks of Bayer. Agrisure, Agrisure Artesian, Agrisure Duracade, Agrisure Viptera, and Artesian are trademarks of a Syngenta group company.
