Cropping thematic area: Designing robust and productive cropping systems at field, farm and landscape level TILMAN-ORG Reduced tillage and green manures for sustainable organic cropping systems, 15 partners, 11 countries, Euros, 19% own funding BIO-INCROP Innovative cropping techniques to increase soil health in organic fruit tree crops, 15 partners, 11 countries, 1,519,835 Euros, 51% own funding InterVeg Enhancing multifunctional benefits of cover crops vegetables intercropping, 15 partners, 11 countries, 593,990 Euros, 12% own funding

COII research project INTERVEG - Enhancing multifunctional benefits of cover crops vegetables intercropping Inter-row living mulches in a cash crop are not common practice in professional vegetable production, nevertheless their introduction in the organic cropping systems can be an useful tool for managing soil nutrients, weeds as well as crop pests and diseases. The practical implementation needs a detailed assessment in different European contests where open field organic vegetable productions are economically and agronomically relevant, and under a wide range of different soil and climatic conditions. Project coordinator Senior researcher Stefano Canali, Research centre for the soil plant system, Italy Participants from Italy, Germany, Denmark, Slovenia

Cropping thematic area: Designing robust and productive cropping systems at field, farm and landscape level Softpest multitrap Management of strawberry blossom weevil and European tarnished plant bug in organic strawberry and raspberry using semiochemical traps, 8 partners, 6 countries, 843,500 Euros, 5% own funding BICOPOL Targeted precision biocontrol and pollination enhancement in organic cropping systems, 7 partners, 7 countries, 718,783 Euros, 28% own funding Vineman.Org Integration of plant resistance, cropping practices, and biocontrol agents for enhancing disease management, yield efficiency, and biodiversity in organic European vineyards, 9 partners, 5 countries, 818,953 Euros, 37% own funding

COII research project Softpest multitrap: Management of pest insects in organic strawberry and raspberry fields The main expected outcome of this project is to develop knowledge about how to manage populations of strawberry blossom weevil, European tarnished plant bug and the raspberry beetle in organic strawberry and raspberry using semiochemical traps. These traps will be selective for these pest insect species and developed for mass trapping. The project investigations will take place in six different countries in central and northern Europa and the outcome will be relevant for growers in the whole region. Project coordinator Research Director PhD Atle Wibe, Bioforsk - Organic Food and Farming Division, Norway Participants from United Kingdom, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, Latvia

Quality thematic area: Ensuring quality and safety of organic food along the whole chain AuthenticFood Fast methods for authentication of organic plant based foods: 6 partners, 12 countries, 1,041,925 Euros, 21% own funding SafeOrganic Restrictive use of antibiotics in organic animal farming - a potential for safer, high quality products with less antibiotic resistant bacteria: 6 partners, 5 countries, 1,123,444 Euros, 51% own funding All three thematic areas: 11 projects, 20 countries, 12.6 million Euros of which 9.1 million are from CORE Organic funding bodies

COII research project Authentic food: Fast methods for authentication of organic plant based foods To document the authenticity of organic food products, a wide range of different analytical methods and protocols will be applied on samples, obtained both at the field and farm level and as processed plant based food products. Aim: to prevent distribution of fake organic food by identifying a fast and cheap screening method for use by control bodies and retailers Unique chemical fingerprint of organic plant products Project coordinator Prof. Søren Husted, Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Copenhagen Participants from Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, The Nederland's, UK

Monogastric thematic area: Robust and competitive production systems for pigs, poultry and fish HealthyHens Promoting good health and welfare in European organic laying hens, 9 partners, 8 countries, 1,009,769 Euros, 8% own funding ICOPP Improved contribution of local feed to support 100% organic feed supply to pigs and poultry, 13 partners, 9 countries, 1,995,575 Euros, 37% own funding ProPIG Farm specific strategies to reduce environmental impact by improving health, welfare and nutrition of organic pigs (pending acceptance of reduced funding), 14 partners, 8 countries, 818,286 Euros, 17% own funding

HealthyHens: Promoting good health and welfare in European organic laying hens The objectives of the project are: to identify management strategies that promote animal health and welfare in European organic laying hens while limiting environmental impacts Special attention will be paid to potential problems related to the actual change to 100% organic feed ingredients Project leader: Prof. Dr. Ute Knierim, University of Kassel, Germany Countries: DE, DK, IT, UK, NL, AU, SE, BE

ICOPP: Improved contribution of local feed to support 100% organic feed supply to pigs and poultry The overall aim is: to produce economically profitable feeding strategies based on 100% organic feed supply poultry and pigs the required level of nutrients in different phases of production, and support high animal health and welfare, while also taking environmental effects into consideration Objectives: Improved understanding of availability and nutritional value (in the widest sense) of underutilized or new organic feed ingredients per animal category, with the focus on local feed resources the possible benefits of roughage inclusion in relation to covering nutritional and behavioural needs as well as the impact on health and welfare Understanding how direct foraging on crops and pasture in the outdoor area can contribute to covering the nutritional needs of pigs and poultry differing in genetics (inclination for activity) economic and environmental consequences of increased reliance on local organically produced feed Project leader: Head of research unit John E. Hermansen, University of Aarhus, Denmark Countries: DK, NL, UK, SE, AU, DE, FI, CH, FR
