Sandra Day O Connor High School Agriculture Program A Northside Career and Techology Program One Program, So Many Opportunities.
Through this Agriculture Program, members begin to discover their unique talents, their values, and their ambition in life. Programs provide them with the opportunity to travel, discover careers in agriculture, and develop their leadership skills. Scholarship Scholarships are available to match a wide variety skills, experiences, career goals and higher-education plans. Last year over a quarter million dollars in scholarship money was awarded to graduating seniors from O Connor Agriculture Program. Travel Numerous opportunities are available for students to travel throughout the United States. Much of the travel is done with-in the State of Texas visiting and competing at Universities such as Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Tarleton State, and Sam Houston State University.
Leadership Anyone can be a leader. The FFA gives students the opportunity to be in positions of leadership. Here are a few examples: Committee Chairman FFA Chapter Officer District Officer Area Officer State Officer Awards FFA has an award to match almost any member s unique talents and interests. Find a program that interests you, set a goal, and work hard to achieve it. You ll gain the skills and confidence you need to succeed in all aspects of life. Community Involvement The last line of the FFA motto is "Living to Serve." It signifies the vital role that service plays in our organization. The O Connor Ag Program through its extra-curricular extension, the FFA, students will get multiple opportunities to become actively involved in their community.
Career Success Agricultural education and the FFA organization exist to prepare young people for the opportunities that lie ahead. Career success is possible when young people have had exposure to, and experience in, a variety of careers that interest them. Agricultural education courses often expose students to an array of careers through classroom experience. FFA takes that exposure a step farther by encouraging students to pursue careers that interest them.
Courses First year students interested in the Agriculture Program are required to take the course Principles of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources. This is an introductory course into the world of Agriculture. Students participating in this course will get a small dose of the fields of study under the agriculture umbrella. This allows students to make a more informed decision on whichever pathway of study to follow. Available fields of Study for students who have met the prerequisite has been met are: Agriculture Mechanics Coherent Sequence: Agriculture Mechanics & Metal Tech. Professional Standards in Ag Business Professional Communications Agriculture Facilities Design & Fab. Agriculture Power Systems Practicum in Agriculture Animal Science Coherent Sequence: Wildlife, Fisheries & Ecology Professional Standards in Agribusiness Professional Communications Equine Science Livestock Production Advanced Animal Science Practicum in Agriculture
Courses Agriculture Business Coherent Sequence: Professional Standards in Agribusiness Professional Communications Agribusiness Management and Marketing Advanced Animal Science Advanced Plant and Soil Science Practicum in Agriculture Horticulture Sciences Coherent Sequence: Principles & Elements of Floral Design Professional Standards in Agribusiness Professional Communications Landscape Design and Turf Management Horticulture Science Advanced Plant and Soil Science Practicum in Agriculture
Leadership Development Events (LDE) Leadership Development Events focus on creating situations for students to demonstrate their abilities in public speaking, decision making, communication and their knowledge of agriculture and the FFA Organization. Team and individual events are used to reinforce what is taught in agricultural science classrooms. The following are a list of a few such teams: Agriculture Advocacy Agriculture Issues Forum Chapter Conducting Creed Speaking FFA Quiz Radio Broadcasting Job Interview Public Relations Agricultural Skills Demonstration
Career Development Events (CDE) Career opportunities abound within today s agricultural industry. Career Development Events help students develop the abilities to think critically, communicate clearly, and perform effectively in a competitive job market. There are 24 CDEs, covering job skills in everything from communications to mechanics. Some events allow students to compete as individuals, while others allow them to compete in teams. The following are a few CDE teams that we train at O Connor High School. Agriculture Sales Floriculture Horse Evaluation Livestock Evaluation Meats Evaluation and Technology Nursery / Landscape Poultry Judging Agriculture Mechanics Tractor Tech
Student Transfers Northside students from campuses other than O Connor who are interested in a transfer to the Agriculture Program need to complete the following steps: 1. Obtain the NISD Intra-District Transfer Form from their home campus or the NISD Dept. of Pupil Personnel located at Central Office. Due Date for this application is in February every year. 2. Transfer forms should be completed on both sides and returned to the Vice Principal at O Connor High School. Be sure to check the stated deadline for return which is printed on the transfer form. Any applications received after the deadline will not be considered. 3. Transfer applications will be reviewed in the order they are recieved. 4. Students that meet the criteria described in the application will be contacted for an interview unless the number necessitates the use of a lottery system that randomly selects candidates for the process. Candidates will continue to be selected for the process until all available spaces have been filled. Students that do not meet the criteria for the program will be notified by mail through the O Connor Admin Staff indicating the reason for disapproval. 5. Students that are interviewed for the program will be contacted by mail indicating the approval or disapproval of the transfer.
Animal Projects and Shows Responsibility, dedication, hard work are the keys to a successful livestock project. Students enrolled in Agriculture Science courses are encouraged to maintain a Supervised Agriculture Experience Project (SAEP), which can include raising a livestock animal or other type of agriculture production. These projects include raising lambs, goats, beef cattle, swine, and poultry. The O Connor Agriculture Program is privileged to have facilities available for students to house large animal projects. Each animal requires a varying degree of individual care and financial responsibility. Students and parents should be advised by an Agriculture Science Teacher before deciding on and selecting a project. O Connor FFA is proud to participate in the Walter Gerlach Livestock Show, Bexar County livestock show, and in some cases, major state livestock shows such as San Antonio Livestock Show.
