1 COST Action BM 1308 Sharing Advances on Large Animal Models SALAAM F I N A L C O N F E R E N C E ADVANCES ON LARGE ANIMAL MODELS: BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH AND CLINICAL TRANSLATION September 28-29, 2017, Halle (Saale), DE The translation of novel discoveries from basic research to clinical application is a long, often inefficient and costly process. Consequently, translational medicine became a top priority. Relevant animal models are critically important for the discovery of key disease mechanisms, targets for medical interventions and subsequent development of new therapies. Rodents are the most popular, but findings in rodents are in many disease areas very different from those in human patients. Thus, animal models mimicking human anatomy and physiology more closely are urgently required. In this respect, pigs, small ruminants and rabbits are excellent candidates. COST Action BM1308 Sharing Advances on Large Animal Models (SALAAM) was established to (i) share technical information and further improve technology for the development of tailored large animal models; (ii) establish and validate standardized phenotyping protocols; (iii) create a database of existing models, standardized tissue samples, and validated phenotypic assays; and (iv) develop concepts for the ethical evaluation of experiments with large animals, including involvement of the regulatory authorities. The conference will include the latest developments in genetic engineering/gene editing of large animal models and demonstrate their translational value for specific disease areas and for xenotransplantation. Viewpoints from different stakeholders, including scientists, clinicians, pharmaceutical industry and biotech companies, health care systems, patients, and policy makers and funding agencies will be taken into account. In addition, rational frameworks to evaluate experiments with large animal models by weighing the scientific and ethical arguments will be discussed.

Part 1 Input Nicola Stingelin (CH; WG4 Co-leader) Part 2 Input from SALAAM Young Scientists Part 3 Discussion, input from plenum Halle Tour and Haendel s birth place museum Gala-Dinner Landesmuseum 30th September from Tour to Lutherstadt Wittenberg 500th Anniversary of the Reformation
4 Halle (Saale) is the only big city in Germany that was not extensively destroyed during WWII. As it is offering a great variety of cultural testimonies it is called the cultural capital of Saxony-Anhalt. With the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, the Saale metropolis is equipped with a strongly performing university that draws on a tradition of more than 500 years. The oldest active association of scholars, the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, has its offices here and will be our meeting venue. During the SALAAM meeting you will have the chance to visit the following sites: DEPARTMENT of ANATOMY and CELL BIOLOGY UNIVERSITY TREASURY The Meckel Anatomical Collection, one of the most prominent European anatomical collections, is housed in the department, displaying more than specimen from five centuries, including the famous Meckel s diverticulum. Archival documents of more than 500 years of German university history will be shown. HÄNDEL HOUSE Georg Frideric Handel ( ) is the most significant son of Halle. The musical genius way to becoming a great European is explained in his house of birth, together with a collection of historical musical instruments. STATE MUSEUM OF PREHISTORY Fascinating testimonies of 450,000 years of human history: the highlight of the exhibition is the 3,600 years old Nebra Sky Disc, the first piece of evidence that indicates our ancestors understanding of the course of the stars. The UNESCO included the Sky Disc in its Memory of the World Register in 2013.
5 Excursion on Saturday, from 9.00 to approx Costs: 60 Euros (including transfer Halle Wittenberg - Halle, dinner and fees) Lutherstadt Wittenberg and 500 th Anniversary of the Reformation On 31 October 1517, Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses against the abuse of the sale of indulgences on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, thereby not only changing the ecclesiastical world but setting in motion a reformation in politics, business, science, art, and culture. The Luther House became the home of the reformer Martin Luther and his family. Today the Luther House is the largest Reformation museum in the world and is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites showing 1,000 original exhibits which not only tell the life and work of the reformer Luther, but also his family life and his influence on history. Castle Church "A mighty fortress is our God" - This line of text taken from the famous hymn, inscribed in large letters encircles the bell tower of this impressive church. The author of the song, the reformer Martin Luther, was to make this church, which was built on the foundation of a former castle, known around the world. The chapel is listed as an UNESCO World Heritage site. The Panorama LUTHER 1517 is a 360 Panorama, a rotunda able to house the 15 x 75 metre work; the combination of a Yadegar Asisi Panorama artwork with this world event designed to commemorate the Reformation by the Protestant Church in Germany as well as the Lutherstadt Wittenberg. The panoramic experience is rounded off with the accompanying music by film composer Eric Babak and sound effects reflecting the era and the setting in the scene.
