2 50 years of Sinumerik A success story in pictures Nuremberg. With Sinumerik, Siemens looks back on 50 years as technology and innovation leader in the field of CNC (Computerized Numerical Control) technology for machine tools. To mark this jubilee year, Siemens has put together an illustrative series of news photos tracing the history of the Sinumerik success story. From the first continuous-path control system for machine tools launched back in the sixties, through the CNC with microprocessor to the first CNC-integrated safety solution: to mark the jubilee year of Sinumerik in 2010, Siemens has revisited its 50-year history, illustrating the different development and innovation milestones along the way in a fascinating photo series. 3 Students at HTW Berlin benefit from state-of-the-art CNC technology from Siemens Berlin. To give engineering undergraduates the chance to work with the very latest that modern technology can offer, the University of Applied Sciences (HTW) in Berman has invested in three CNC machines supplied by Spinner including a five-axis milling center complete with Sinumerik 840D sl controller from Siemens. Students are also offered the chance to work with the Siemens SinuTrain training software for CNC programming. Technically oriented courses, particularly those with a more practically based slant, depend heavily on the use of modern machinery. Since the summer semester of 2010, the HTW Berlin has offered its engineering students ideal conditions to gain hands-on experience. Our new five-axis machine allows us to put students directly in touch with the very latest that modern technology has to offer, explains Göran Estel, Lab Engineer at HTW Berlin. The drive system and controller used in the five-axis milling center are from Siemens. Interaction between the individual components impacts positively not only production speed but also on positioning and repeat accuracy. The result: increased productivity. The ability to machine workpieces in a single piece also results in an enhanced surface finish and improved overall quality. Students have the opportunity to test out at first hand just how the machine works: As part of a study project, one group of undergraduates developed a complete CAM machining strategy for a workpiece destined for use in the aerospace industry starting with the initial model sketches, through the design phase to CAD/CAM programming. To allow several students to work on programming at the same time, the University decided to install SinuTrain learning software in its training PCs. After only a brief induction, even students without any appreciable programming experience were able to program their design using the ShopTurn and ShopMill user interfaces from Siemens. The 3D graphics were then used to perform virtual machining operations on screen, allowing any errors to be quickly detected and remedied without wasting costly materials. Finally, the prototype was actually produced at the five-axis machine. Thanks to the Siemens Safety Integrated solution, the students were able to observe the production sequence generated by their program with the machine door open. As the name suggests, Safety Integrated is incorporated directly into the control system. Its function is to monitor system data with safety relevance using two different channels between the drive system and the controller. The data gathered from the two channels is continuously compared and processed. If a potential hazard is detected, the safety system stops the machine movement, bringing all the drive systems to a standstill after one or two millimeters at the latest. 4 Sinamics SL150 cycloconverter used in ore mill for the first time Nevada / USA. Canadian mining company Quadra FNX Mining Ltd. has commissioned Siemens to modernize the drive in an SAG mill in its Robinson open-cast copper mine in Nevada, USA. In conjunction with a new diagnostic system, the ore mill with the Sinamics SL150 direct cycloconverter is designed to enhance the operational reliability and availability of the plant while reducing maintenance input and costs. The ore mill modernization project undertaken by the Robinson Mine revolves around the installation of a Sinamics SL150 cycloconverter. As part of the Simine Mill GD solution concept developed by Siemens, this allows analog or early digital control systems to be replaced without the need to exchange the motor or transformers. Particularly for retrofit projects, the control system of the cycloconverter can be replaced while retaining the power unit. The converter and the relevant automation equipment are pre-assembled in a container module (E-House). Siemens is also supplying a diagnostic system, as well as applications for operating data acquisition and remote servicing. This affords maintenance personnel a continuous up-to-date overview of all the relevant plant parameters. Unplanned shutdowns can be largely prevented, and maintenance intervals adjusted to fit in with actual requirements, so cutting down on maintenance costs. Siemens is also responsible for hardware and software engineering, installation supervision and commissioning, as well as adaptation of the automation equipment. 5 New CU305 PN control unit with Profinet interface for simple Sinamics S110 positioning drive The range of control units available to date featuring the Profibus (CU305 DP) and CAN (CU305CAN) interfaces is now being extended to include the CU305 PN control unit with Profinet interface. With this new function, the Sinamics S110 can now be used also in these networks to execute simple positioning tasks by means of position control using synchronous and asynchronous motors. Like the other control units, as well as the most important positioning functions required in practice, the CU305 PN is also capable of executing drive-related logic functions. It also encompasses the complete array of integrated safety functions currently available within the Sinamics family: Safe Torque Off (STO), Safe Stop 1 (SS1), Safe Stop 2 (SS2), Safe Operating Stop (SOS), Safely Limited Speed (SLS), Safe Speed Monitor (SSM) and Safe Brake Control (SBC).
