4 Introduction SAG Public Utility Solutions Public utility companies are nowadays assigned a wide range of different tasks. Optimal and sustainable organisation of these tasks during their daily business requires coordinated processes and comprehensive IT support. In addition to classic documentation tasks for the different application modules, the SAG CeGIT Division has bundled competence and know-how under Public Utility Solutions. 5 4 Resource information A major element of the companies assets is tied up in resources such as stations, lines or distribution stations. To ensure that the assets can be used for a long time and sustainably and reliably by the companies, regular monitoring and inspection in accordance with fixed rules is indispensable. The necessary data base for this is provided by resource information systems (RISs). In these systems, information and data from a range of different sources is consolidated and is supplemented by specific additional information. The intelligent use of information for operative and strategic aspects of maintenance is referred to as Smart Maintenance. IT support plays a central role in the derivation of decisions on the maintenance and replacement policy for systems and networks. Smart process support demands entry and recording of maintenancerelated data without media discontinuity during running operations. This forms the basis for focussed and sound decisions in network management.

7 6 Geoinformation The application area of digital geoinformation has significantly expanded with the development of modern information and communication technologies. Paper maps, for example, have been replaced by digitized data. This development now enables us to link data directly to spatial information, and to access, select and evaluate the data and information from any location. Modern public utility companies can make use of these capabilities and make their processes even more efficient. 9 8 Data collection Data collection covers data entry or surveying tasks. One example is the determination of inventory documentation for planning tasks, for marking out construction sites or for new systems. Since inventory documentation can nowadays only be economically managed in digital format, we work with the latest electronic tachymeters and GPS technologies. 13 12 Network planning Well-functioning networks are a prerequisite for numerous infrastructure services. To ensure continued supply without fluctuations, networks must continuously be inspected and evaluated and where necessary expanded. The basis for the correct strategy and the associated measures is provided by advance network calculations, simulations and plan variants. This applies not just to the medium-voltage networks. Small-scale distribution networks are also subject to special dynamics, resulting primarily from the regenerative energies of a local feeder. Smart grids are designed to intelligently control networks and to integrate other components (e-mobility, smart meter). The development of a smart grid requires qualified, dynamic data.

In many companies an extremely wide range of digital information sources are combined to support day-to-day business. In public utility companies, several independent systems are in use. In this case, it is particularly important to ensure that the data used is correct and up to date. Structured configuration of object relations offers the advantage that reporting once again becomes routine. Integration thus forms the basis for increased quality of the network data.
