Content Objectives Method Inventory Form Status Quo Preliminary Analysis Next Steps Case Study: ArcWeb Services 2
Objectives Work package Description: Analyse the market in terms of potential applications Provide a detailed description of user and business requirements Task Description (2.2): Compile and describe potential commercial applications Check existing applications (who make use of gazetteer functionality - in the broader sense) Analyse & evaluate these results in order to derive requirements for the egn service (content, quality) To provide input to other work packages 3
Method / Inventory Form Survey within the egn project consortium Inventory form was developed Basic information: Name, Operator, Description Sector information: public / private Information about the business model /commercial aspect Information about the Platform / Medium Web-Address and Screenshots (if possible) Gazetteer Information: Database, Service, Name Attributes, Accuracy, Completeness, Variants, Service Level Inventory form was sent to the consortium members in order to gain a wide range of existing applications 4
Status Quo 19 Applications are documented in the inventory (not really representative) No input from consortiums partners recieved so far What we have: Web-Map applications Web Catalogue Services Desktop-GIS Routing Business-Finder What we do not have: CD-ROM Map / Atlas-Production 5
ArcMap and external Gazetteer Gazetteer and map contain different attribute data Gazetteer: typical (name, type, description, rank ) Map: project specific (area, population, income ) Projects take use of projectspecific attribute data. Potential conflict: projectspecific attribute data / additonal name attributes by EGN-Service 6
Forest-GIS (FGIS_online) Gazetteer search catagories used: Administrative Units Forestal Units Forestal Units have to be consistent with thematic data of the operator Operator derives forestal units from time to time from his own thematic data External Gazatteer Services (geonames.org) planned - only for additional use! 7
EGLV Intranet Viewer Gazetteer search catagories used: Waterbodies / Sections Sewage Plants Pumping Stations All with several additional name attributes! Very high quality requirements: Consistency with own thematic data Daily updates ArcSDE Server Processes Additional use of external, commercial Address- Information planned 8
Address-Finder data Address data in most applications needed Addressfinder interface needed (street, housenumber, city) Addresses vs. Places 9
Preliminary Analysis Most commercial applications make use of their own Gazetteer Service & Database the use of external Services is not very popular yet The most common search catagories are: Complete address information (!!!) Administrative units Other search catagories or additional attributes are rarely used. If used, they are derived from own thematic data of the operator In most cases, additional attributes are a part of thematic data and no part of the gazetteer data. Gazetteer search is entry point to further GIS-Processing Accuracy Point coordinates (Address information) Bounding-Box (all other units) 10
Preliminary Analysis The Update frequency is mostly not very high (annually) The Gazatteer Database always has to be complete in respect of the area covered by the project Orthography can be catched up by the Application (Sounds like, Wildcards, ) Variant names are rarely used at the moment. Local, regional or nationwide applications do not need them. Applications with international focus use duplicated entries for different languages / or only in the originating language. But: Increasing need is expected (cross-boarder-acitivities, globalisation) Real commercial applications (e.g. vodafone) require a very high service-level (performance, reliability, service-hours) 11
Next Steps We would like to complete the inventory Input from the consortium needed! Final Analysis 12
