5 What is HPMS HPMS is a national level highway information system that includes data on the extent, condition, performance, use and operating characteristics of the nation's highways. 5

6 Challenges faced by DOT Requesting 65+ Data items and keeping track of them Validating every single item individually and in groups Finding missing data items Sample validation and Adequacy Producing Reports Lack of Map Reference to validate the data Very Labor Intensive work Repeating whole process again next year 6

7 Project Requirements Need to Create a web based GIS application that automates and monitors the workflow for preparing and submitting the HPMS data System should allow for geographic locating, analysis, comparison and reporting of HPMS data which includes 68 data sources/attributes Data should be requested and entered through the Web based UI and point to a central Database. Data sharing and privilege will be control by the HPMS Coordinator User will receives notifications when data is requested 7

8 Project Requirements Coordinator sees Assigned tasks and their status Coordinator sees next step and deadlines Coordinator can generate all required reports Coordinator can generate transaction files for FHWA Hpms Coordinator can create TOPS, check Sample Adequacy and System suggests to delete and Add new Samples System will keep track of all the changes System will keep previous year data System will validate all data Self Navigated, Efficient and Centralized 8

9 The New HPMS Application Web based Single all inclusive system for managing and automating HPMS reporting. Import data from various business systems (Pavement, Traffic etc.) and also from external data sources (Airports, State parks etc.) Esri based GIS integration provides crisp & useful visualizations Use ESRI LRS or Oracle Spatial LRS Linked to digital video log Full data validation before FHWA submittal (Import, cross and coverage) Progress dashboard & Workflow task manager Export shape files and transaction files directly from the 9 web interface

19 Challenges Faced Need to have fully documented current HPMS procedures (Source systems, data processing steps, etc.) Cleansing and Aligning existing data to new templates Complex real-time data validations Long running procedures required asynchronous parallel processing (Multi-threading) Handling large datasets without bogging down the system. Job queues handled directly by the database. 19
