for Work Construction A workbook for learners working in the Construction sector or on related courses

How to use the Construction workbook The workbook contains information, activities, tips and ideas, quizzes and test questions. These are the sections to look out for: Remember that elevations show buildings from all four sides. Opposite elevations have the same shaped roof. These boxes contain useful tips and suggestions Asif needs to deal with a site visitor. Read the examples below and decide which one of each pair of examples he should use. Look at the examples again. Match the correct example up to each statement. Bricklaying work on Site 1 (Wed) Moving scaffolding to Site 1 (Mon p.m.) The best response is: A B C When you see the clipboard sign it means you have a question to answer or a task to do. The question or task will be printed in bold type. If there is more than one task on a page, the clipboards will have numbers to help you check your answers. The pencil sign marks the place where you write your answer. You may be asked to do different things depending on the question, such as: l writing your answers on the dotted lines or solid lines l writing the answer in the spaces provided l ticking a checkbox l circling the answer. You can photocopy the worksheets in the workbook and use them to help improve your skills in the workplace. They will also help you to develop your literacy and numeracy skills. They may be useful for other qualifications as well. Sometimes you might need to check your answers. You ll find answers in the back of the book. Advice to tutors: This pack contains a selection of support materials for the development of a range of literacy and numeracy skills. The materials can be used with learners from Entry 2 to Level 2 of the adult literacy and numeracy core curricula, though most of the activities are at Entry 3 and Level 1. Full curriculum referencing is given on pages

for Work Construction 3 Measures Working out perimeters (1) You need to be able to calculate perimeters so that you can work out the materials you need for some jobs. Which construction worker describes perimeter correctly? Tick your answer. Perimeter is the amount of space inside a room or a storage tank. Perimeter is the amount of space taken up by a surface, such as a wall or a floor. Perimeter is the distance around the edge of a room, building or plot of land. The opposite sides of a rectangle are the same length, so there are four measurements you need to add together to work out the perimeter of a room. There are different ways to work out the perimeter of rectangular rooms or buildings: l add the four sides together: length + width + length + width; or l double the length and double the width, then add them together: 2l + 2w; or l add the length and the width together, then double the answer: 2(l + w). A damp-proof course needs installing in these two buildings. Calculate the perimeter of each building to work out how much material you need. (Include windows and doorways in your calculations.) m Warehouse 11.3 m Shop 9.3 m 0.9 m 1.1 m 4.5 m 0.5 m 1.1 m m 0.5 m 0.5 m 0.9 m 1.4 m 0.5 m 3.1 m 1.6 m 3.1 m 0.5 m Office 1 Reception 8.8 m Office 2 Perimeter = Perimeter = 5.8 m 53

for Work Construction 3 Measures Working out perimeters (2) It s useful to be able to work out perimeters without a calculator so that you are prepared for any situation. Calculate the perimeters of these buildings to work out how much scaffolding to hire. Use the notepads to list all the measurements you need. Show all your workings out. When you add or subtract decimals: l Make sure that the measurements are all in the same units. l Line the numbers up under the decimal point, so that the figures are in the right columns. l Add extra zeros so that there are the same number of decimal places after the decimal point. l Keep the decimal point in the same place in your answer. Remember, perimeter is the distance around the edge of a room, building or plot of land m 4.2 m 2 Buttermere Close Measurements: 4 m 8 m Plan of 2 Buttermere Close 3.8 m Perimeter = 9.85 m 4 Carrington Drive Measurements: 4 m 10.3 m Plan of 4 Carrington Drive 7.3 m Perimeter = 900 mm 3.3 m 9.4 m Add the perimeter of both of the buildings to find the total length of scaffolding required. Perimeter of 2 Buttermere Close Perimeter of 4 Carrington Drive Total length of scaffolding 54

for Work Construction 3 Measures Working out perimeters (3) You will need to calculate perimeters to work out materials such as coving and skirting. Remember, you won t need skirting where the doors are in a room, so you will need to subtract these measurements from the perimeter. Coving fits around the top edge of a room. l The length of coving is the same as the perimeter. Skirting fits around the bottom edge of the room, but not across the doors. l Subtract the width of the doors from the perimeter. Calculate how much skirting board and how much coving you need for these rooms. 2.9 m Sitting room 1.8 m 1.5 m Sitting room Coving 1.0 m 1.6 m 2.2 m Skirting 2.9 m 2.0 m 2.9 m Dining room Coving Skirting 2.2 m 1.0 m 3.2 m Dining room 1.0 m 1.6 m 1.6 m 2.2 m 2.0 m 2.2 m 55

for Work Target Skills for Work is a series of CD-ROMs and workbooks providing skills development in literacy and numeracy at Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2 for learners in the workplace or on workplace-related courses. The material is mapped to the requirements of the adult literacy and numeracy core curricula. The materials concentrate on the essential literacy and numeracy skills required for work, including basic number skills, and reading, writing, speaking and listening. The tasks are all brief, work-related and self-contained, making them ideal for use in the workplace or in informal training contexts. Learners can work on their own, at their own pace, using bite-size chunks of learning to develop new skills or confirm and develop existing skills. The materials complement other methods of teaching and learning. In particular, learners can work through the materials independently or with various levels of support, allowing tutors to focus their time on support rather than on marking. For each title there is a CD-ROM and workbook available. Titles include: Target Skills for Work: Construction Target Skills for Work: Hospitality Target Skills for Work: Care Target Skills for Work: Manufacturing Target Skills for Work: Cleaning Target Skills for Work: Retail. The Target Skills suite Target Skills for Work is complemented by other resources in the Target Skills suite. This provides an ICT-based diagnostic assessment against the national standards and curricula in adult literacy and numeracy, and ICT learning materials mapped to the standards and curricula, all of which can be managed by a specially designed web-based management and tracking system. Resources include: Target Skills: Initial Assessment Target Skills: Entry Literacy Target Skills: Entry Numeracy Target Skills: Level 1 Literacy Target Skills: Level 1 Numeracy Target Skills: Level 2 Literacy Target Skills: Level 2 Numeracy Target Skills: ESOL Collection Target Skills: English Works The Spelling Disc Numbers Up!
