1 Volitional sustainability, with affiliated nursery and additional crèche The former kindergarden»kastanienburg«completely burnt down in May The architects and engineers BAUFORUM, Landshut, accepted the bid for the new construction which now was expanded to eight units including an additional nursery group, a new crèche and an all day nursery. The main building was designed as a simple structure on two areas with a flat roof parallel to the street and directly refers to position and orientation of the nearby elementary and high school. This explicit East- and West orientation creates additional, generous free space in the garden and enough distance towards the neighbouring school buildings. The façade design, with its vertical LONGOTON tiles of up to 3 m in length, breaks new ground. Physical planning and layout The situation of the building is orientated towards the course of the access street, so that all playrooms and recreational rooms open towards the backside garden area. Functional rooms such as cloakrooms, sanitation facilities, kitchen etc. are orientated in line with an explicit, clearly laid out basis concept towards the street side. This system is interrupted by a parenthetical one-storey bolt

The transparency of its generous vitrification is consistently developed as a design concept over the glass façade of a big multifunctional room, the play yard, until the projecting summer hall. The play yard as an open connection between main building and summer hall further develops the structure and functions of the neighbouring multifunctional room on the lot. The clearly arranged physical planning and the explicit structure of all usable areas allow a good orientation and contribute to the children s comfort and ease in their new environment. Sustainable façade design The compact, ca. 55 m long main structure is divided off-centre by the above mentioned parenthetical bolt. This caesura structures the façade and pictures inside as well as outside the logical subdivision according to specific functions. Furthermore, the parenthesis is underlined by a material and colour change in the façade. The floor-to-ceiling larch wood sheathing accentuates its autonomy and closes it off of the coloured façades of the two-storey main building. The vertical LONGOTON clay tile façade, partly stretching on the end wall and the garden side from floor to ceiling, gives the object its typical mark. This was generated by the idea to optically shorten the length of the building and to differentiate it at the same time. The remaining façade fields contrast with it as rendered parts in a bright blue grey. The colour choice of the ceramic cladding was chosen very sensitively according to the character of the house, its meaning and especially a volitional design of sustainability: no large-scale dominance, no presumptuous colours. Based on the discrete earth tones of the clay material, a wavelike colour sequence is developed from the darker tones to the very bright sand coloured panels and then again rising to the strong and warm pastel red. The composition of the clay material was especially adapted to the changed static load resulting from the vertical installation of the tiles of up to 3,00 m length. The choice of simple materials, of natural colours and clear lines demonstrate the architects commitment to restraint; the new construction was supposed to present itself timeless and sustainable rather than flashy and presumptuous signs

3 - 3 - The elongate two-storey building is subdivided by a parenthetical one-storey transversal bolt that opens up on the garden side towards the projecting summer hall.

4 - 4 - All doors and windows giving to the garden side are vitrified from floor to ceiling; the closed wall segments are correspondingly clad with floor to ceiling vertical LONGOTON clay tiles. The wave like colour sequence from dark to very bright sand colour tiles recurs again and again.

5 - 5 - Towards the street side, a one-storey transverse bolt clad in larch wood defines the access situation. The wave like colour sequence of the earth colours of the clay material comes out particularly interesting in the context of the fresh green of the nature.

7 - 7 - A covered passage leads from the new construction to the former caretaker s house, which in the course of the redesign was converted into secondary rooms.
