2 general Information Architectural concrete masonry ranks with the highest quality materials used for exposed exterior and interior structural building elements. Its use on award winning strucutres is indeed a compliment to this material s beauty, durability and versatility. With many of today s modern construction materials becoming increasingly more expensive, architectural concrete masonry by Permacon is a surprisingly economical alternative. Each unit is specially formed and cured for enhanced in-wall appearance and provides thermal qualities, fire resistance and sound absorption properties not found together in most alternative materials. All architectural and standard masonry units are manufactured in metric modular sizes conforming to CAN CSA A165.1 (CSA Standards on Concrete Masonry Units). Order and Delivery Architectural concrete masonry units are not stock items. With hundreds of possible combinations of colour, size, configuration and quantity, each order is manufactured in accordance with individual project requirements. Permacon will provide every assistance in the selection and application of its products. Credit will not be issued on the return of architectural block and accuracy of the order including an allowance for breakage is the responsibility of the customer. Colour in Architectural Units A wide variety of solid and range colours are available for architectural units. Our standard selection is shown in our literature, and actual samples are available on request. Contact your Permacon sales representative during the design stage of the project to assure availability and to discuss delivery details. 2

3 Special Considerations 1 As shown in the detail drawings, only 10 cm return corner units are commonly used. The backup block should be colour matched or standard grey and clearly specified or shown on the drawings. 2 Colour for the mortar should be pre-selected to complement the colour of the unit specified. 3 Particular attention should be paid to design details such as flashings, dampproofing and weep holes as preventative measures to minimize moisture penetration. 4 It is the responsability of the contractor to ensure correct placement of control joints as directed by the architect. Please contact your Permacon representative for further information. 5 Colour consistency cannot be guaranteed in smooth face units and subtle variations in shade and texture of all coloured unit is normal due to the natural materials used in the manufacturing process. 6 No acid or acid based solutions should be used in the cleaning of coloured masonry products. Specification Suggestions For a simple standard specification, refer to the Ontario Concrete Block Association Metric Technical Manual or call your Permacon representative. Concrete Block: Metric, as manufactured by Permacon to CAN CSA A165.1 standards. Design configuration shall be (insert product name and colour desired) as manufactured by Permacon. Good masonry practice is required in the laying of this product. Special instruction where ledge block masonry is used: It is important to note that both left and right hand corner units be specified. The contractor shall, with an abrasive stone, rub down the lower edge of the ledge recess to remove rough or feathered edges. Special instruction where split rib block is used: It is the responsability of the contractor to remove small amounts of loose concrete residue from the recess between ribs of the units. Special instruction where Crystal White is used: Special care must be taken to protect Crystal White units from contamination. Do not stack other materials on top of skids. TECHNIcal 3
