2 The Retreat Little Mill, Monmouthshire The Retreat is an exclusive new development in the delightful setting of Little Mill and features a small number of 4 and 5 bedroom family homes. Located just 3 miles north east of Pontypool and 3 miles west of Usk, Little Mill has the Brecon Beacons to the north, the Wye Valley to the east, the famous Welsh Valleys to the west and Cardiff city in the south. The village itself, which derives its name (Little Mill) from a watermill once located here, originally consisted of the Halfway House public house, a working corn mill, a tan yard, and a blacksmith/farriers shop. Several houses on Berthon Road were built for the railway staff who worked on the Newport-Crewe mainline. Today the village still has a railway line running by it but the nearest stations are at Pontypool & New Inn, Abergavenny and Cwmbran. Although there are relatively few facilities in the village itself, it does have a large village hall - home to a number of local groups and clubs - a church and a pub, all of which combine to give a sense of community identity. Little Mill is in the catchment area for several schools including Usk primary and Goytre Fawr primary school as well as several comprehensive schools including Caerleon Comprehensive School and King Henry VIII School Abergavenny. The nearest town of Pontypool has a beautiful park which is located right in the centre of town, a museum, golf clubs and a wealth of historic landmarks. There is an indoor market most days in Pontypool and a weekly street-market on Wednesdays, while for a more extensive shopping experience Cwmbran Shopping, less than 15 minutes away, is one of the biggest shopping centres in Wales. There are excellent indoor entertainment options in Pontypool and Cwmbran including bowling and cinemas, but this is really the place to experience the great outdoors. Walks in the countryside, across mountain tops or along the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal there are all sorts of opportunities to get your walking boots on, even if you don t take part in the annual Wales Valleys Walking Festival. You can also get closer to nature and learn about the local wildlife, flora and fauna by taking in one of the six local Nature Reserves in the area. For more active pursuits, you could tackle the dry ski slope in Pontypool Park, go paragliding, outdoor karting or mountain biking. And if you prefer the water to the hills, there is the impressive Llandegfedd Reservoir situated between Pontypool and Usk which is ideal for sailing, windsurfing and fishing. 3 Local Wildlife Here at Charles Church we take our environmental responsibilities very seriously and we are passionate about designing homes that are sensitive to the environment and native wildlife. We regularly work with communities across the region to assist in the preservation and conservation of wildlife and this is part of what we are doing here at The Retreat. After a pre-development appraisal it was found that the Little Mill area was home to two species of bat, The Common Pipistrelle and The Brown Long-Eared bat, which use the buildings and trees to roost. Working with a local ecologist, Charles Church has implemented several measures to ensure the bat population is sufficiently protected. We have ensured that every home with a garage has a specially adapted loft within the garage to provide potential space for bats to roost, and we have built a variety of self-contained bat boxes which have been discretely attached to some exterior walls around the development.
