PLTW Professional Development Conference Civil Engineering & Architecture December 9-10, 2013 Country Springs Hotel - Pewaukee, WI
Evaluation of High School Pre-Engineering Curricula on Freshman CM Student Performance Blake Wentz and Christopher Raebel Milwaukee School of Engineering 2
STEM Education Over the last decade there has been a push in the US to improve the educational performance of students in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math 3
PLTW Mission PLTW mission is to prepare students for the global economy and to provide them with a foundation and proven path to college and career success 4
Relevant PLTW Coursework Introduction to Engineering Design (IED) Principles of Engineering (POE) Civil Engineering and Architecture (CEA) Engineering Design and Development (EDD) 5
Studies on PLTW Performance There is some literature on the effectiveness of PLTW Current literature focuses on High School performance No studies conducted about their performance in college 6
Current Research Initiative The goal was to determine if PLTW had any effect on student performance at MSOE Students in the CM program were defined by PLTW experience GPA at the end of the freshman year was used as comparison 7
Preliminary Results N Minimum GPA Maximum GPA Mean GPA Standard Deviation Non-PLTW PLTW
Conclusions There are differences between the two means (2.55 vs. 2.72) Statistically there is not a significant difference Cannot yet prove (or disprove) that PLTW affects student performance 9
Continuing Efforts The sample size is small - a wider group should be used This data is also only from MSOE - data needs to be gathered from other universities for comparison Consideration of other engineering majors 10
Column Design To Supplement the CEA Structural Design Curriculum 11
Goals for this Presentation Supplement the CEA Structures Curriculum (Keystone Library; Final Project) with a simple yet meaningful design problem Complete the load path from horizontal framing (beams, girders) to the foundation Expand on existing course content without adding significant time demands Example partially taken from the CEA curriculum (Lesson 3.2, Loads and Load Path presentation) 12
Girder Footing Beam Column Partial View of 2 nd Floor Framing For clarity the ground slab, 2 nd floor slab and roof structure are not shown. The column is 18-0 from floor to floor (both levels) (PLTW 2013) 13
Calculating Column Loads Calculating Column Loads (PLTW 2013) 14
Calculating Column Loads 1 2 (20 ft) 10 ft (PLTW 2013) Tributary Area = (18 ft)(20 ft) = 360 ft 2 15
Calculating Column Loads Loads from roof level: DL = (28 psf)(360 sf) = 10,080 lb SL = (23 psf)(360 sf) = 8,280 lb Loads from floor level: DL = (40 psf)(360 sf) = 14,400 lb LL = (100 psf)(360 sf) = 36,000 lb Load combinations (ASCE 7-10): - Three combinations apply: D+L D+S D+0.75L+0.75S Roof: D+S = 10, ,280 = 18,360 lb Floor: D+0.75L+0.75S = (10, ,400)+0.75(36,000)+0.75(8,280) = 57,690 lb (ASCE 2010) 16
Column Selection Assumptions: - Column is a wide flange shape (try a W8) - Column is braced in both directions at the floor and roof Practical considerations: - The column will be one piece (36-0 +/- is not unreasonable) 17
Column Selection USE W8 24 (Raebel 2013) 18
Summary and Comments Final selection: W8x24: Design capacity = 59.1 kip > Demand = kip Comments: A more complete table of W8 column capacities is in your handout Other shapes (square tubes, for example) may also be suitable for columns Pick up a use AISC manual from a used book store and you can see all column capacities! 19
