1 Problem Description For this design project you will work in your project groups to complete a partial design of an office building. Specifically, you will design and fully detail three components: 1. The exterior bay and first interior bay of the one-way slab along the strip indicated in the plan drawing of the building. 2. Reinforcement for a typical continuous floor beam along column line E in the plan drawing of the building. 3. Reinforcement for exterior column E1 along its full height. Each member of the group should participate in each task. CATME surveys will be used to rate participation of team members. The final report will be due on December 18, the day we are scheduled to take the final exam (this project takes the place of the final exam). Technical calculations will be due in various stages leading up to the final due date. Occupancy and Location: The building is an office building located in Dubuque, IA. The importance category is II (less than 300 people). The exposure category is B (urban/ suburban). There are no topographic features of significance near the building and the roof is fully exposed to environmental loads. The building consists of 9 moment resisting frames along an east west orientation. Stairwells with shear walls in the corners of the building provide bracing in the northsouth direction. Materials: Grade 60 reinforcement for all members f c = 4,000 psi for the columns, beams and slabs Loads: Roof: Snow To be determined Live Load 20 psf Dead Load 110 psf (includes weight of structural members) Note: You will not be designing the roof members, but the roof loads will affect other members that you do design. Floors: design for gravity loads only use ACI moment coefficients Live Load 75 psf (no live load reduction) Superimposed Dead Load 30 psf (does not include weight of structural members) Columns: design for appropriate gravity and wind loads Cladding DL 40 psf (cladding consists of brick and glass façade it is applied as a distributed vertical load)

2 Architectural Limitations: Beam height is not to exceed 28. Exterior and interior columns will be square in cross-section. Design of all building elements should conform to the requirements of ACI 318 provided in your course packet and design loads should conform with ASCE 7-05 requirements. Report Requirements Individual element designs will be assigned with preliminary due dates. A bound report with final design calculations will be turned in on or before the date that the final is scheduled for this class. That report shall contain the following: A cover letter that describes the problem statement. Address the letter from yourself (the design engineer) to XYZ Holdings, Inc. (the owner). A Title Page A Table of Contents A brief description of your design selections (general dimensions, etc.) including plan drawings showing the building layout and identifying the specific members you have designed. Drawings of the final reinforcing layouts for the members you have designed including the following: 1. A plan drawing of the structure 2. An elevation drawing showing a typical frame 3. Side view of the two designed bays of the one-way slab. Indicate termination points of reinforcement, designations of the reinforcement, and other important details. 4. Side view of a typical floor beam showing termination points of the reinforcement, designations of the reinforcement, stirrup layout, and other important details. 5. Cross-sections for the typical floor beam showing bar layouts and stirrup dimensions. 6. A side view and cross-section for the exterior column. Indicate the details of the joints between the column and the floor beams. Also indicate the spacing of ties and details of splices in the reinforcement. Your design calculations. - Please separate the calculations section into sub-sections separated by cover sheets (one-way slab design, beam flexural design, frame analysis, etc.). - You may turn in your marked up preliminary tasks, but errors should be corrected. - If neatness issues are noted on the work, those should be addressed as well. If this requires you to recopy work, please do so. - Each and every page of your design calculations should indicate (with initials) the designer and checker. - The use of spreadsheets if highly recommended. However, you will need to provide sample calculations so that the grader can check your work.

3 Timeline (tentative) CE 3150 Reinforced Concrete Design Design Project Monday Nov 5 Turn in preliminary one-way slab design. Monday Nov 12 Turn in preliminary flexural design for the floor beam. Monday Nov 19 Turn in preliminary frame analysis results: 1) Calculations used to determine load types 2) RISA printouts showing the load types (dead, live, etc.) on the frame. 3) A plot of P u vs. M u for the load combinations. Friday Nov 30 Turn in preliminary column design. Monday Dec 10 Turn in preliminary shear design for the floor beam. Tues Dec 18 Final report due. (Exam group #9)
