Over a period of use collets will eventually lose their full gripping capacity and need to be replaced. Ideally at every tool change the collet should be cleaned to remove any build up of waste material on its surface and checked for burrs in the gripping and locating areas. Any collet found to have burrs should be replaced, as this is a prime source of broken cutting tools. The locknut should be cleaned at every tool change. The clamping surfaces and thread should also be examined for wear and burrs. The locknut should be replaced if there are any signs of wear or burrs, which will prevent the collet running concentrically in use. If the collet is not locating correctly in the locknut there is also a potential for premature failure of the cutting tool in use. Tech Tip Replace collets regularly.
