2 Thames Tideway Tunnel aims to: Thames Tideway Tunnel What it means for local people Contractors will employ at least one apprentice for every 50 site employees at all times throughout the works. Thames Tideway Tunnel will seek to ensure that at least 20 per cent of employees live in the drive site borough. At least 25 per cent of employees will live in the boroughs where project worksites are located. For river transport, at least 30 per cent of employees will live in Greater London, Kent or Essex. Local unemployed people and exoffenders will have equal opportunities within the contractor workforce. Local businesses will be given the chance to benefit from spending on goods and services. The project will create approximitaly 4,340 sustainable, direct jobs.

The Tunnelling and Underground Construction Academy (TUCA) The academy offers a wide-ranging curriculum to its students which is of a huge benefit for projects like Crossrail and the Thames Tideway Tunnel. This includes the Tunnelling Construction Passport which helps to meet the skills requirements needed when working underground. TUCA is working to fill the gap of those qualified for mining and underground work to drive the evolution of the industry in the UK. Creating a cleaner, healthier River Thames River transport related skills Of the 24 construction sites needed to build the Thames Tideway Tunnel, 11 are located on the river. Over the lifetime of the project 4.8 million tonnes of material could practically be moved by river. It is assumed that at least 4.2 million tonnes, or 90 per cent of this, will be transported by river. A river transport workforce is needed to deliver this target. The project also represents a wider opportunity to promote the use of the river as a significant freight route. There is a shortage of people working in riverrelated transport skills, especially with regard to marine boatmasters who require detailed local knowledge and a Boatmaster Licence (BML) which takes at least two years to complete. We are working with the Port of London Authority (PLA) and the Thames Training Alliance (TTA) to help develop opportunities that will meet the skills gap identified and reinvigorate the river economy.
