8 Health & Safety and Leadership & Management Keeping you safe, with training for every step of your career COURSES FOR NEW ENTRANTS/OPERATIVES Health and Safety Awareness For those looking to apply for their green CSCS card. This course is one of the elements needed to obtain the green CSCS card and to develop their knowledge and understanding of keeping themselves and others safe at work. COURSES FOR SUPERVISORS Site Supervisor s Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) For all site supervisors. This course covers all the responsibilities relating to health and safety for site supervisors. It is mandatory for those working on any United Kingdom Contractors Group (UKCG) site. This qualification is valid for 5 years. SSSTS Refresher For supervisors who need to update their qualification. This refresher course must now be completed before the qualification lapses at the end of the 5 year period. Temporary Works Supervisor For those who have responsibility for supervising temporary works on site. NVQ Diploma Level 3/4 in Construction Site Supervision For site supervisors and assistant site managers who want to achieve a recognised NVQ qualification, through taught sessions and assessments. Level 3 is aimed at subcontractor supervisors, and Level 4 is ideal for principal contractor supervisors looking to achieve their CSCS gold card. Construction Institute of Leadership and Management (CILM) Level 3 Award and Certificate For practising or aspiring front line managers. This course provides the knowledge and skills to effectively lead, manage and supervise a range of people safely across sectors of the industry. 9 Health & Safety and Leadership & Management COURSES FOR MANAGERS Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) For project managers, site managers, client-based managers and construction business owners who require the knowledge and skills to manage a site safely. This course is recognised by Build UK as meeting the required standard for managers on their sites. The qualification is valid for 5 years. SMSTS Refresher For managers who need to update this qualification. This refresher course must now be completed before the qualification lapses at the end of the 5 year period. Site Environmental Awareness Training Scheme (SEATS) For site managers, site supervisors and subcontractors who need to understand the basic environmental requirements of major contractors. Temporary Works Coordinator For managers who need to safely oversee and manage risk around temporary works on site. This course is supported by the HSE, Temporary Works Forum, CECA, and FMB. NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety For existing or new managers to the construction industry who are responsible for the health and safety of others, seeking a globally recognised qualification and those seeking a role in construction health and safety. NEBOSH National Certificate in the Management of Health and Wellbeing For managers, supervisors or HR personnel who have responsibility for, or involvement in, the health and wellbeing of staff as part of their daily duties. COURSES FOR DIRECTORS Director s Role for Health and Safety For all construction directors. The course will encourage delegates to look at the health and safety impacts of boardroom decisions on their workforce and promote a positive health and safety culture. The course will explore legal responsibilities and the economic, financial and human impact of non-compliance. Bespoke Health and Safety Training For companies with six or more staff who need tailormade training. Bespoke training can be delivered at company premises, on-site or at a college. We are proud to offer world-class facilities and expertise for training. Our courses are underpinned by the Construction Plant Competency Scheme (CPCS); a professional and national scheme which recognises the skills, knowledge, competency and qualifications of individuals. We offer experienced workers and those new to the industry skills and assessments, to ensure the training is relevant for your needs. Our site in Derbyshire runs in conjunction with JCB and in Norfolk we have over 200 acres specifically for plant training. We also deliver plant maintenance qualifications from our NCC East and NCC Scotland sites. We can also offer large companies and experienced workers in-company training and on-site assessments. 13 Plant Operations and Plant Maintenance ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR OUR COURSES Candidates will need a relevant (passed within the last 2 years) CITB Health, safety and environment test and a good understanding of written and spoken English. For card renewals, updates or additional categories, we can advise you on which courses you are eligible for and whether there are any further requirements. To access any grant funding available, you will need to be CITB Levy-registered. Find out more at citb.co.uk/levy EXPERIENCED WORKERS In some situations, many of our courses can be run over two or three days as intensive training, where experienced workers without qualifications can gain a CPCS Trained Operator card (red CPCS card). CARDS AND QUALIFICATIONS EXPLAINED On successfully passing the CPCS tests, operators are awarded a red CPCS card which means they are a trained operator. They can then work towards completing their blue CPCS card. To gain the red CPCS Trained Operator card, you will need to: Have passed the HS&E test within the last 2 years Undertake basic training on the category Pass the CPCS technical theory and practical tests. To gain the blue CPCS competent operator card, you will need to: Have the relevant NVQ/SVQ in plant operations Have passed the HS&E test within the last 2 years Undertake refresher training Pass the relevant technical, theory and practical tests. 17 Construction and Specialist Trades COURSES FOR MANAGERS AND SUPERVISORS Intermediate and advanced setting out For engineers, technicians or supervisors who wish to build on their knowledge in this area using modern Leica equipment. New Roads and Street Works Act (1991). Full course and refresher training available For those needing to supervise work on the highway. Successful candidates will be listed on the Street Works Qualifications Register. Reinforced concrete for supervisors and engineers For those who need to supervise and control concreting activities effectively. Temporary works, general awareness For a wide range of construction professionals who will not be undertaking temporary works directly, but need to develop their knowledge in this area to assist in their role. For example; estimators, planners, construction managers or directors, graduates or career switchers. Temporary works supervisor For those who have responsibility for supervising temporary works on site. 19 Scaffolding and Access Scaffolding plays a vital supporting role to the industry. At the NCC we recognise the importance of regulation and training to make UK scaffolding and access the safest it has ever been. Working at height requires specialist training and facilities. We are proud to offer the biggest and the best training for scaffolders at all stages in their career. We work closely with industry bodies such as National Access and Scaffolding Confederation (NASC), and are accredited to deliver CISRS (Construction Industry Scaffolding Record Scheme) training across our sites. We use the National Construction as the sole training provider for scaffolding. They are helpful, accommodating and informative. Our operatives who attend training find them engaging and enjoyable. The high level of training can clearly be seen when they return to work. We would not dream of using anyone else for our scaffolding training and would always recommend them to others. 20 Scaffolding and Access COURSES FOR CISRS CISRS Construction Operatives Training Scheme (COTS) For those new to the industry and need a green CISRS labourer or a red trainee card to get on site. Scaffolding Part 1 (Tube and Fitting or System) For those looking to train as a scaffolder and obtain a red trainee CISRS card (who have held a COTS labourer or trainee card for a minimum of six months). Scaffolding Part 2 Tube and Fitting For trainees that have at least six months site experience since successfully completing their part 1. CISRS Level 2 skills match For trainees that have at least six months site experience since successfully completing their part 2 and achieved an NVQ level 2. If successful, you can then apply for a blue CISRS scaffolder card. Advanced Scaffolder For scaffolders, who wish to obtain an advanced CISRS card, have held a blue card for a minimum of 12 months while working as a scaffolder. CISRS Level 3 skills match For scaffolders that have at least six months site experience since successfully completing their advanced course and achieved an NVQ level 3. If successful, you can then apply for a gold CISRS scaffolder card. SITS INSPECTION AND SUPERVISORY COURSES Scaffold Inspection Training Scheme (SITS) For experienced scaffolders, supervisors, site managers or health and safety personnel with an awareness and experience of scaffolding structures that are required to understand and monitor the safety and suitability of scaffolding on-site in accordance with codes of practice and legislation. Advanced Scaffold Inspection Training Scheme (SITS) For professional scaffold inspectors, scaffolding supervisors and managers and others who would be responsible for the inspection of complex tube and fitting scaffolds. Must have held the CISRS basic inspection card for a minimum of 2 years. CISRS Scaffolding Supervisor For personnel providing first line supervision for scaffolding contractors. (i.e. contract managers, supervisors, foremen and non-working charge-hands) Experienced Worker Practical Assessment Route (EWPAR) For those who have completed part 1 and part 2 scaffolding training and do not have a level 2 S/NVQ qualification, but need to prove their experience with a card. This is a practical assessment conducted off-site, and is not a training course. System Scaffold Product Training Scheme (SSPTS) 2 days For experienced scaffolders and system scaffold erectors who hold a current CISRS card having completed a minimum of the part 1 training through either the tube and fitting or system scaffolding route. Part 1 and 2 system specific training courses availability upon request. Call for entry criteria Access training courses for all PASMA mobile towers For those who need to work at height and be trained on a PASMA system tower. 20

21 Scaffolding and Access SCAFFOLDING QUALIFICATIONS AND CARDS EXPLAINED Scaffolders need CISRS cards to work on site which are achieved by training with the Construction Industry Scaffolding Record Scheme (CISRS). Scaffolders can progress from a green labourer s card to a red trainee card, to a blue basic scaffolder card and then on to a gold advanced scaffolder card. We offer training at all these levels. CARD 1 CARD 2 GREEN SCAFFOLDING LABOURER CARD Requirements: RED TRAINEE SCAFFOLDER CARD Requirements: CISRS Operative Training Scheme (COTS) Health, safety and environment test: Site Safety Plus. BLUE BASIC SCAFFOLDER CARD Get the right card for your skills CARD 3 CARD 4 Green card held for 6 months CISRS Scaffolding Part 1: Tube & Fitting or System Scaffold Health, safety and environment test: Site Safety Plus. GOLD ADVANCED SCAFFOLDER CARD Requirements: 6 months site experience after completing your Scaffolding Part 1 CISRS Scaffolding Part 2: Tube and Fitting or System Scaffold NVQ/SVQ level 2 site diary for assessment NVQ/SVQ level 2 is assessed and verified by NCC Requirements: CISRS Advanced Scaffolder course (10 days) NVQ/SVQ level 3 site diary for assessment NVQ/SVQ level 3 is assessed and verified by NCC Six months site experience CISRS Level 3 Assessment (2 days). Six months site experience CISRS Level 2 Assessment (1 day). 21

22 On Site Assessment (NVQ/SVQ) Designed for those who prefer to achieve their qualification through being assessed on the job; ideal for anyone in the industry needing a relevant CSCS card. You must be working in the role relevant to the qualification and have a good understanding of spoken and written English.
