WORKING WITH MOTHER NATURE, NOT AGAINST HER! Dixon Shoreline Landscaping Portage, Wisconsin Recessed Stair Case Mid-Level Lake Access DAY ONE Site Inspection Dead Man Anchors Mid-Level Lake Access 25ft above Lake End of Four Hour Site Inspection 50 ft. 120 ft. Walls are hidden behind all of this vegetation Figuring it all out- wow, this is a big job! This job is 120 across and 50 high. Pitch 1.2 to 1 Timber Walls Are Not A Long Term Solution Timbers hold moisture which creates mold and fungus Wood fibers cannot breath properly Timbers cannot properly dry out creating an environment for rot and insect nests and habitat conditions for other vermin Timbers harbor colonies of ants and bees and other wood boring insects which can become a problem around the foundation of the home. Proper drainage of rain water and moisture which is part of hydro static pressure cannot take place, because of the impervious material Average lifespan of treated timber is anywhere from 15 years to 20 years dependent on the chemical treatment of the wood Environmental concerns with this method of using chemically treated wood, leaves long term leaching of chemical residue into the soil Wood wall showing signs of bowing and settling. This wall is only 17 years old. Wood decay and dry rot. 1
Into the unknown of rotted wood and poison ivy. Invasive Plants have taken over and will need to be removed. Only 10 from the water. Ice push is a concern. West end 50 down Decorative wood mulch on terraces, decreases the lifespan of the timber walls. Wow, I m not quite sure I want this job, it s quite a leap! What about these trees and access getting down? Design Points Sandy Soil f 28 o, no cohesion 1H:1V existing slope No room to flatten the slope No room for excavation for soil reinforcement. Typical depth for reinforcing on a 1:1 slope is H, ft. Slope Stability Soil Boring Testing Is a requirement on a hill side this steep! Existing Slope 2
Soil samples taken to a depth of 50, for the purpose of engineering Drill rig, positioned as close to the edge of the hill as possible for accurate soil samples. Collaboration with all entities needed to happen within 30 days, including approved permits from WI DNR, Columbia County Planning and Zoning, and Race Engineering. Everything hinged on soil test samples, as well as a soil erosion & sediment control plan. This information is needed to present a rough estimate of the cost for this project to the homeowner. Ladders installed to access all 10 terraces With state and local permits approved and posted, soil samples analyzed and engineering plans completed, along with a signed contract from homeowner, we began this endeavor on 8/21/2014. Day 1: Remove invasive plant species from the shoreline in front of lower wall. Chute used to transfer stone to the rip rap. Building the base up with 6 to 8 inch diameter rock. ¼ steel plate backboard stopper! Every rock is hand placed and numbered! 3
Prepping the access cut thru the existing wooden walls Access to the lower level walls finally complete Placing Mini Excavator in position to remove wooden timbers. With rip rap complete and access in place, we can now begin the demolition and installation of soil bags! Installing Block and Tackle Rigging 1 st 30 Section Timbers removed Using the tree for leverage Soil bags being sent down the chute for installation 4
Dense vegetation was here, it was all invasive species and has now been removed, and is readied and prepped for soil bags. GEO Grid Bringing Down Back Fill First 30 Complete First 30 Complete Earth Anchors and GEO Grid being installed, every 2 high and 6 laterally. All Hands on Deck, Digging our for The Next Section Using the barrel method to remove soil, up and out of the work area. Soil Bags Positioned and Ready to be installed Wood Pole Grab, for Timber Removal Driving in 3/16 Galvanized Cable Earth Anchor, connected to #880 better built anchor head. Earth Anchor and GEO Grid Installation ¾ Coated re-rod GEO Grid White sand, was discovered in soil test. White Sand is like silica sand it has no ability to bind and tends to roll creating problems for stability. Rotten wood at the base of this wall Good Progress, for Late Fall. 5
The magnitude and depth of this project is awe inspiring. Old Wooden Dead Man Anchors This was the most grueling part of the hand work for our team. New Discoveries Every Day! West End Lower 8 Almost Done What a run so far, just a little further this year 6
One week to go before the end of the season! Hydro Seeded with native seed and cover crop. One quarter of the job completed before the winter of 2014 Benefit of soil bags in this project: Provide stability and sustainability for the long term, without ecological devastation from chemically treated materials. Create an environment for native species to flourish with out the look of urbanization. Allow expansion and contraction with the naturally occurring freeze/thaw cycle as well as allowing moisture to seep through, so hydro static pressure doesn t build up and cause blow out. Offer long term solutions for the replacement of man made structures, as well as stabilizing areas that could be prone to erosion and slide off. June 2015 Old landing and lake access removed, as well as recessed stairs removed. The hillside is starting to take shape the way we envisioned 7
Replacing old wooden stair case with stone stairs for lake access, following the original stair layout as close as possible Working below old wooden walls are always a concern for soil cave in Using slides and chute to get materials down to the work area Soil bags provide sediment and erosion control along the sides of in-ground stone staircases. In-ground stairs constructed properly provide a natural low profile look along the water way. Replacing the stairs between a 4 wide Oak tree and 2 wide Cedar tree, left little to no room to expand the footprint of the stair access for the homeowner. In-ground stairs were the only option on this project due to the rise and run of the hill. Mini conveyor system in use to transport materials up and down the slope Building the base to support the stone stairs Upper stairs Run and Rise has to be within one half inch 8
Stairs are finally in after 3 weeks Access to the pier had to run along the hillside Installing soil bags along in ground stairs prevents soil loss Using soil bags to stabilize the slope allows us to follow the natural contour of hillside Vegetation growth is good Weather has been great 1 ½ months until the season is done Late summer 2015 Railings are in Access to the lake is complete. ALL approved by the local building inspector 9
Spring of 2016 All soil bags held up fantastic! WORKING WITH MOTHER NATURE, NOT AGAINST HER! All we need to do now is install 10,000 plant plugs and hook up the irrigation system Cost of a happy customer and a successful job (PRICELESS!) Dixon Shoreline Landscaping Portage, Wisconsin 10
