1 SECTION 0XXXX FIRESTONE EPIC SYSTEM PART 1 - GENERAL 1.01 CONDITIONS A. The general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and General Requirements (if any) apply to the work specified in this Section SCOPE OF WORK A. Furnish all labor, material, equipment and services necessary to provide all Firestone Environmental Passive Integrated Chamber (EPIC) work, complete in place, as indicated on Drawings and Specifications herein. Work specified in this Section, but is not limited to the following: 1. Installation of the EPIC system. 2. Survey work shall ensure that the subgrade of the EPIC installation area is laser level flat, smooth, compacted and free of sharp objects which might puncture the Firestone EPDM (EPDM) geomebrane rolls. The subgrade must be approved by the Owner s Representative. 3. Ensure the finish grade surface elevation is consistent across the field, and laser level flat. 4. Plans and provisions are made for adequate containment of sand and aggregate along the EPIC cell perimeter edges as specified on plans. 5. EPIC parts assembly and related service components are made according to the EPIC approved plans or as supervised by the Owner s Representative. 6. Grading, leveling, and final compaction of the sand fill are to be completed by the Contractor and approved by the Owner s Representative on or before proceeding to the final placement of sod phase. 7. Locate and protect all existing EPIC components, pipes, valves, valve boxes and other physical features of the EPIC area and the immediate vicinity. 8. Protect all pavement and hard surface areas. Damaged areas will be replaced at Contractor s expense. 9. Installation of aggregate and sand shall be done with tracked skid steers, front end loaders, telescoping conveyor or other acceptable industry practices ensuring damage is not done to the EPIC components. 10. Settling, consolidation and compaction shall be done with water, vibra-plate, rolling and/or tracked skid steers as specified and as approved by Owner s Representative. 11. Furnish and apply specified amendments and/or fertilizer.

2 12. Incorporate amendments using a Toro Sand Pro, Blekavator or equivalent machine with 2 to 4- inch cultivating attachments. 13. See the Grading Plan for finish grade elevations. 14. Sod shall be installed per plans and specifications as specified QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Approved EPIC System Contractors 1. The Contractor must take part in an installation training program and at the end of the program must have met certain objectives to be approved for installation of the EPIC System. Approval does not mean the Contractor is certified but rather they have an adequate understanding to install the EPIC System. 2. Training shall include retaining an EPIC Construction Engineer for certain sections of the installation process at the Contractor s expense. Depending on the Contractor s experience, the EPIC Construction Engineer may or may not be on site throughout the entire installation process. B. The Contractor shall obtain and submit imported sand and aggregate samples to Owner s Representative for inspection prior to using imported fill material for each EPIC area. 1. The imported bottom bridging aggregate layer: Submit a one (1) gallon sample of washed 1/4-inch minus bridging aggregate meeting the general specifications for ASTM C33-03 (Table 2 Grading Requirements for Coarse Aggregates, Size No. 89), Standard Specifications for Concrete Aggregates. This material shall be tested by the approved EPIC Testing Agent at the Contractor s expense. 2. The imported sand layer: Refer to EPIC recommendations for Choosing the Right Sand and EPIC Sand Testing Procedure as preliminary screening tools. Submit a two (2) gallon sample of medium washed sand meeting the general specifications for ASTM F , Standard Guide for Construction of High Performance Sand-Based Rootzones for Sports Fields. The imported sand layer shall also meet the specifications detailed by EPIC in regards to particle size, capillary draw, settlement, consolidation, compaction, and drainage characteristics. This material shall be tested by the approved EPIC Testing Agent at the Contractor s expense. This testing shall determine the minimum EPIC system profile height, the proper operating profile height and if any soil amendments are necessary. 3. The test results of the sand and aggregate shall be reviewed by the Owner s Representative, who has the right to reject the imported sand and aggregate if either does not meet specifications. C. The Contractor shall obtain and submit sod & fertilizer information to Owner s Representative for inspection PRODUCT DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING A. Deliver undamaged products to job with tags and labels intact. B. Arrangements to be made for forklift or equivalent to unload palletized EPIC components

3 off delivery truck. C. Store materials in protected areas, off the ground, and in areas as not to interfere with the progress of the work. D. Transport, store and handle in strict accord with the Manufacturer s written specifications. E. Make delivery to job when notified by Contractor verifying that the job is ready to receive the work of this section and that arrangements have been made to properly store, handle, and protect such materials and work JOB CONDITIONS A. Contractor shall acquaint himself with all existing site conditions. If unknown active utilities are encountered during work, notify Owner s Representative promptly for instructions. Failure to notify will make Contractor liable for damage to these utilities arising from Contractor s operations subsequent to discovery of such unknown active utilities FIELD MEASUREMENTS A. Make and be responsible for all field dimensions necessary for proper fitting and completion of work. Report discrepancies to Owner s Representative before proceeding. B. Submit an As-Built construction conditions survey at the Contractor s expense. PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.01 GENERAL A. All materials shall be of standard, approved and first-grade quality and shall be in prime condition when installed and accepted. Any commercially processed or packaged material shall be delivered to the site in the original unopened container bearing the Manufacturer s guaranteed analysis. B. The Contractor shall supply Owner s Representative with a sample and/or shop drawings of all supplied materials accompanied by analytical data from an approved laboratory source illustrating compliance of bearing the Manufacturer s analysis MANUFACTURERS A. Connection pipes between EPIC chambers shall be 2-inch non-pressurized Schedule 40 Solid Wall Construction HDPE, ABS, PVC or approved equal. J. Inlet Header and Zero Drain / Return Header pipes shall be a 6-inch non-pressurized SDR 35 PVC with push-on elastomeric gasketed joints bonded to the inner wall of the gasket recess of the bell socket. K. Pressurized pipe from reservoir sump pump to inlet vaults shall be 1.5-inch Schedule 40 Solid Wall HDPE, ABS, PVC or approved equal. L. Pressurized pipe within manhole to be Schedule 80 solid wall HDPE, ABS, PVC or approved equal. M. All other pipe as shown on the plans or as approved as equal. N. Concrete Manholes 1. Concrete manholes shall be in accordance with plans and specifications. 2. Concrete manholes shall be precast reinforced integrated concrete barrel structure w/top slab & integrated copolymer polypropylene steel steps. Manhole cover shall be minimum 24-inch dia. lightweight solid access hatch w/locking mechanism. 3. Concrete shall be sanitary sewer quality capable of withstanding fertilizer erosion as well as resistance to effects of salt water. 4. Concrete shall have a minimum compressive strength of 4,000 PSI minimum at 28 days. 5. Reinforcing steel to meet the design requirements of H-20 traffic loads for the top slab and 50 PCF lateral soil pressure for the walls and the floor. 6. Contractor to supply and install: pipe and fittings, rubber boot at pipe penetrations larger than 4- inch dia., non-shrink grout at all other pipe penetrations, joint seal at all precast joints. 7. All pipe connections to be waterproof through concrete manhole. 8. All electrical, plumbing, structural work, etc. to be done per local codes and requirements where required and applicable. 9. All electrical and water supply to be design/build by Contractor. 10. Contractor to ensure all pipe connections, and concrete manholes are water tight

6 with water test. a. Test manholes twice prior to acceptance. b. Fill system and let stand for 24 hours. c. Empty, refill and determine water loss over next two (2) hours. d. Any leakage shall be cause for rejection. e. Perform second test. No manhole will be accepted if there is any leakage over the two (2) hour period. O. Reservoir Manhole Pump, [Insert manufacturer, model, etc.] 1. Pump to be installed by a licensed electrical Contractor and shall conform to Local Codes and Regulations. Install per Manufacturer s Specifications. 2. All electrical and water supply to be design/build by Contractor. P. Water level maintaining float valve, [Insert manufacturer, model, etc.] Q. Required electrical to be design/build by Contractor, and that such electrical connections will be designed, certified, and installed per local building codes and regulations by a licensed Contractor. This shall include, but not be limited to supply, control panels, junction boxes, etc WATER SUPPLY LINES A. Water delivery systems supplying water to the storage reservoir manholes to be installed according to plans with minimum delivery pressure of 20 PSI and delivery volume of 12 GPM per acre of turf per pump. B. Required water supply to be design/build by Contractor, and that such water source connections will be designed, certified and installed by others, per local building codes and regulations by a licensed Contractor SAND AND BRIDGING AGGREGATE FILL MATERIAL A. The sand shall meet EPIC Specifications of: 1. General Specifications of ASTM F , Standard Guide for Construction of High Performance Sand-Based Rootzones for Sportsfields. 2. The sand should be advertised as washed sand, where most of the silt and clay particles have been removed. 3. The ph of the sand should be in the neutral range ( ). 4. The sand should feel gritty when rubbed between the fingers, crumble readily when dry, and absorb water quickly when water is poured on top of it. 5. Ideal sand should have 90 to 100 percent of its particles between 0.20 mm

7 and 1.0 mm in diameter. Within this range, the medium sized particles, with a diameter between 0.25 mm and 0.50 mm, should comprise at least 50 to 70 percent. However, the preferred acceptable ranges are listed below: CLASSIFICATION PARTICLE SIZE (mm) SIEVE # ACCEPTABLE RANGE (%) FINE GRAVEL 2.00 AND UP 10 VERY COURSE SAND COURSE SAND MEDIUM SAND FINE SAND VERY FINE SAND SILT AND CLAY under The sand should be evaluated to ensure after the EPIC sand evaluation, it meets the proper capillary rise and drainage dynamics. B. The bridging aggregate shall meet EPIC specifications of: 1. General Specifications of ASTM C33-03 (Table 2 Grading Requirements for Coarse Aggregates, Size No. 89), Standard Specifications for Concrete Aggregates. 2. The aggregate should be advertised as washed aggregate, where most of the silt and clay particles have been removed. 3. For most aggregates the sieve size should fall within the following parameters: PARTICLE SIZE (mm) ACCEPTABLE RANGE (%) Less than 1 Under 10 2 to 8 80 Greater than 9 Under 10 PART 3 - EXECUTION 4. The aggregate should be evaluated to ensure after the EPIC aggregate evaluation, it meets proper bridging capacity. 5. The aggregate layer must provide an interface barrier to bridge the overlying EPIC sand above it. It must meet the general specifications of the United States Golf Association (USGA) where the bridging factor is D1 5 (aggregate) less than or equal to 8 X D85 (rootzone). 6. As sand sizes vary from very fine (0.05 mm) to course (2.0 mm), the aggregate layer generally follows the 8:1 ratio rule where most of the aggregate particles in the aggregate are not larger than 8 times the particle size of the sand above it.

8 3.01 SUBGRADE PREPARATION A. An excavated containment area shall be prepared by others prior to EPIC subgrade preparation to receive a minimum 14-inch profile of imported washed sand, 2-inch bridging aggregate fill material, and EPIC components over the entire system surface. Overall minimum depths of EPIC areas are 16- inch in turf areas as specified on plans and as determined by tested and approved sand & aggregate samples per Section 1.03 and B. The base of the EPIC cell containment areas shall be laser level flat and sloped 0% in all directions with a grading tolerance of ±0.50-inch. C. After the subgrade has been properly graded, it shall be compacted using a suitable vibrating roller or compactor to a minimum 95% Standard Proctor Density or as outlined in the Geotechnical Report. The subgrade shall be sloped 0% in all directions with a grading tolerance of ±0.5 inches as specified above. D. The Contractor shall provide compaction testing in accordance with the Geotechnical Report OR at a minimum one test per 5,000 square feet per EPIC System. Results of the compaction testing shall be submitted to Owner s Representative and approved prior to proceeding to the installation of subsequent system components. The compaction testing shall be at the Contractor s expense SUBGRADE EVALUATION AND FINISH A. After subgrade compaction the end result should be a smooth, laser level, compacted surface sloped 0% in all directions with a grading tolerance of ±0.50-inch. The subgrade shall be free of sharp objects which might puncture the EPDM geomembrane rolls and must be approved by Owner s Representative. B. If the Contractor encounters unsuitable material for constructing a subgrade per the specifications of Section 3.01, they shall develop and present a plan to Owner s Representative for approval. Any soil correction costs shall be at the Contractor s expense SUBGRADE EPIC EPDM GEOMEMBRANE APPLICATION A. After the subgrade is deemed acceptable by Owner s Representative the installation of the 4.5 oz. non-woven geotextile fabric shall proceed where specified. B. Roll out protective geo-textile fabric sub-liner over bottom and sides of subgrade. Secure in place to prevent wrinkling from vehicle tire and/or tracks. Overlap edges with a minimum of 6 to 12-inches of material OR as per Manufacturer s Specifications. C. Roll out EPDM geomembrane material over smooth sub-grade and remove wrinkles or folds from bottom of liner. Overlap edges with a minimum of 8-inch of material and perform seaming per the Manufacturer s Specifications as shown in the EPDM Geomembrane Quickseam Batten Cover Strip method. D. EPDM geomembrane is extended up the EPIC containment cells slightly above finished grade along perimeter walls separating non EPIC areas. Do not trim excess material until finished grade is established. E. EPDM geomembrane converging into EPIC cell corners is neatly folded over itself to form a watertight continuity.

9 F. Do not construct more lined EPIC cells as can be filled in a day. Avoid exposing liner for extend4d periods. Liner placement shall be such as to avoid unnecessary traffic over liner material SYSTEM FEED, RESERVOIR AND DRAIN LINE INSTALLATION A. Install 6-inch diameter Zero-Drain / Return Header Reservoir Manhole Connection Pipes according to plans or specifications. Be sure that connection pipes are at proper elevations to maintain gravity drain function back to appropriate storage reservoirs without sags that can retain water. B. Install 1.25-inch diameter supply line from sump pump with reducing tee to 1.0-inch diameter supply line to inlet vaults. Pipe size and materials as per plans. C. 6-inch Inlet Header and Zero Drain / Return Header pipes must be surrounded by sand or road base material prior to backfilling with native excavated trench material. D. All joints in Inlet Header and Zero Drain / Return Header pipes outside of EPIC System must be connected water tight per accepted & approved industry standards for plastic pipe installation. E. Install the appropriate number of inlet and observation vaults as specified on the construction plans. F. Install storage reservoir at elevation specified on plans. Storage reservoir to be installed on an approved sand or aggregate base per the Manufacturer s requirements FIRESTONE EPIC CHAMBER CONNECTION AND AGGREGATE FILL A. EPIC Chambers are to be installed laser level flat with 0% grade. B. Connect EPIC Chambers, and 2-inch non-pressurized Schedule 40 HDPE/ABS/PVC or approved equal connections as specified on plans. C. Use an appropriate alignment method to maintain straight line separation distance between EPIC Chamber rows as specified on plans. D. For standard EPIC Chamber connections, do not glue but insert 2-inch connection pipes 3.25-inch into Chamber to engage the internal stop nub inside the EPIC Chamber. E. For Zero Drain EPIC Chamber connections, do not glue but insert 2-inch Zero Drain connection pipes 2.25-inch into Chamber. F. For Header Pipe connections, do not glue but insert 2-inch connection pipes through grommet and 2.25-inch into Header pipe. G. After 2-inch connections are made, weigh down all EPIC Chambers with sand bags on top of EPIC crown to prevent shifting during aggregate and sand fill operations. H. Place EPIC approved washed 1/4-inch minus bridging aggregate 2-inch deep along bottom of EPDM geomembrane and along sides of EPIC Chambers. The gravel fill must enter and cover the outside sidewall openings in the EPIC Chamber.

10 I. Remove excess aggregate from crown of EPIC Chamber if present SAND PLACEMENT AND PRELIMINARY FINAL GRADE A. Place all imported sand over aggregate and to depths specified on plans. Use appropriate equipment to install sand over aggregate in a manner that does not disrupt aggregate or damage other system components. Equipment such as telescoping conveyors may be used to place imported sand. B. Remove sand bags on top of EPIC crown as imported sand covers and weighs down EPIC chamber. C. Consolidate sand in two steps: 1) area between 2-inch connection pipes and EPIC Chamber sides and 2) area above Chambers to final grade level in lifts of no more than 8-inch in depth. D. Water settle and roll using a 2-feet x 6-feet smooth roller delivering approximately 100 pounds weight per linear foot width. E. Upon completion of preliminary fine grading and placement of all sand, the Contractor shall notify Owner s Representative, and have available a laser plane system with slope control for inspection. F. The surface of the EPIC system shall be flat with consistent grades, sloped 0% in all directions, and a grading tolerance of ±0.5-inch FIRESTONE ATS MESH ELEMENTS A. ATS Mesh Elements shall be incorporated with a Blekavator or approved equal from finish grade to 43-inch below finish grade in designated areas as specified on plans. B. One bale of ATS Mesh Elements shall be used for every five (5) cubic yards of imported sand or for every 400 sq. ft. when specifying a 43-inch installation depth. A profile reinforced with 43-inch of ATS Mesh Elements shall support snow plow equipment or other vehicles for mowing or maintenance no heavier than medium duty pick-up truck. C. Areas where ATS Mesh Elements are installed must have soil amendments incorporated with a Blekavator or approved equal at the same time in conjunction with the Netlon Mesh Elements to avoid a secondary disturbance of blended mesh material. Take care not to damage subsurface components. 1. Soil Amendments a. Apply surface materials using a drop or cyclone type spreader for uniform distribution of materials ~ Iron Organic Sustane (April/May 2012) ~ Iron Organic Sustane (June 1 st 2012) ~ Iron Organic Sustane (July 15 th 2012)

11 ~ Iron Organic Sustane (September 1 st 2012) Organic Winterizer (October 15 th 2012) 7. Apply Starter Fertilizer at the rate of 1 pound of material per 1,000 sq. ft. 8. Apply ~Iron Organic Sustane at a rate of 1 pound of material per 1,000 sq. ft. 9. Apply Organic Winterizer at a rate of 1 pound of material per 1,000 sq. ft. 10. Areas not receiving Firestone ATS Mesh Elements can have the soil amendments incorporated to a depth of 2 to 4 inches using a Toro Sand Pro (or approved equal) with 2 inch teeth in 2 directions (45 and 90 degrees). Take care not to damage subsurface components. D. Upon final completion of installation of ATS Mesh Elements, burn off of exposed mesh (if seeding is proposed), and approval by Owner s Representative has been provided, proceed to vegetation installation FINAL SURFACE PREPARATION A. Slowly introduce water into the system and observe the pattern of capillary rise to the surface. B. Use the color change in the sand during the water charging process to identify flow restrictions or anomalies if any. Notify Owner s Representative if an even moisture pattern does not develop at the finish grade level. C. Apply moisture or irrigation to settle the surface and roll with a 2-feet x 6-feet roller having approximately 100 lbs. of weight per linear foot width. D. Repeat operation until surface is smooth, level, and firm. Foot printing should not be deeper than 0.5- inch SOD INSTALLATION A. Before seed is applied, Owner s Representative must inspect the field. Sod shall not be applied until further settling is not apparent. B. The EPIC system must be adjusted so that moisture is present in the top 1/4-inch of the surface OPERATIONS AND MANTINANCE MANUAL A. See Manufacturer s operations and maintenance manual. END OF SECTION
