MEng year 1 Structural Engineering Project Structures/Structures with Management Bridge Msida Valley CVE 5101 CVE 5101: Structures CVE 5103: Structures with Management Design Workshop Workshop Co ordinator:. Tutors: Prof Dion Buhagiar,,,, Programme This workshop will have a eight week duration, commencing week 5 th October 2017 Submission dates: Concept design: Thursday 19 th October 2017 Structural appraisal of proposals: Thursday 16 th November 2017 Final Submission: Thursday 30th November 2017 Review date: To be announced Deliverables: Credits Assigned: Drawings + Small working model+ Preliminary calculations + report. 5 ECTS Method of assessment: Deliverables + Oral Presentation. 1 P age
Objectives The design brief The main objective of this workshop is to prepare a preliminary design for a bridge to spanning Msida Valley road as shown on the site plan. The proposed new bridge must have a clear span and cannot have any supports projecting down to the valley floor. The aim of the workshop will be to produce a number of conceptual bridge designs using various structural materials, preparing preliminary calculations for initial sizing, and producing general arrangement structural drawings, as well as detail drawings for a bridge spanning over the Msida Valley as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The project duration is 8 (eight) weeks and there will be intermediate reviews of your design work as indicated in the table at the end of this document. Figure 1: Proposed location of bridge 2 P age
Figure 2: Proposed location of bridge The design parameters Bridge loading: Load Model 1 (LM1) MSA EN Wind loading: 28 m/s Temperature: Temperature movements are to be taken into consideration. Basis for design (a) The foundations, abutments and piers should be preliminary design. The deck and other structural elements supporting the deck should be designed in detail. (b) The design should include deck bearings for articulation, expansion joints, parapet and deck drainage. (c) Foundations are assumed to be deep foundations. (d) Consideration should be given to all stages of erection when overall stability effects should be checked under nominal wind loads of 2kN/m2 applied over the projected surface area in elevation. Aerodynamic effects need not be considered. 3 P age
Learning outcomes for this project must demonstrate that you: Learning outcomes (a) Are capable of providing a number of reasoned innovative structural concept designs, based on sound engineering judgement, with a varied choice of structural materials. (b) Have an understanding of the principles of wind loading. (c) Have an understanding of bridge loading (MSA EN , & MSA EN ) (d) Have an appreciation for overall structural stability. (e) Have an understanding for the use of different structural materials, such as concrete, steel, timber, etc. (f) Have an appreciation of the use of approximate methods of calculation and rules of thumb, used in preliminary member sizing. (g) Possess good visual and verbal presentation skills. The project timeline CVE5101 & CVE5103 Design Workshops (Structural Engineering/Structural Engineering with Management) October 2017 Start Date: 5 th October 2017 End Date: 30 th November 2017 Task 1 Conceptual Design and design considerations Prof. D Buhagiar The following tasks involve Week 1 Week 2 Commencing: 5 th October 2017 Informal Review Task 1 Friday 20 th October 2017 You will prepare several concept designs for a bridge over Msida Valley. Your concepts are to be based on existing case studies; you are expected to explore the various types of bridge configurations that are typically used for this type of bridge. Structural solutions should seek to be innovative, elegant and structurally efficient. You are to consider solutions in different types of structural material. You will prepare preliminary sketches for your proposals. You will be required to indicate your choice of bridge design. You are not required to produce a formal submission, but you are to bring sufficient material to highlight your thought process. 4 P age
Task 2 Preliminary Structural Design Prof. D Buhagiar Dr Rebecca Dalli Gonzi Week 3 Week 6 Commencing: 19 th October 2017 Having chosen your structural configuration, you will be required to prepare preliminary calculations for initial sizing of the bridge. You will take into consideration load patterns as prescribed in EN 1991, as well as wind loading on your structure. The task involves producing preliminary structural design calculations for the bridge, taking into consideration loading patterns, wind loading etc; Due consideration is to be given to how your bridge will be built on site. Informal Review Task 2 Friday 17 th November 2017 This is not a formal review and no presentation material is to be prepared, but you will be required to show the work you have done, and to explain how you arrived at the size of your bridge components, and what were the main design decisions that influenced you final choice of design. You are also to highlight issues that you feel might affect your final design. Prof. D Buhagiar Dr Rebecca Dalli Gonzi Task 3 Week 7 Week 8 Commencing: 16 th November 2017 Final Structural Design, Calculation, Report and presentation During this phase, you will finalise your structural design, produce structural details and produce a report outlining the design process, the strategic decisions you made in arriving at your final design, and sufficient structural calculations to justify your proposal. Prof. D Buhagiar 5 P age
Formal Final Review Date to be announced Given your choice of structural solution, you are to take into consideration the location of the proposed site and to prepare the following: This is a formal presentation in front of a panel of people. You are to prepare 3 in No A1 boards that will include: (a) A Structural general arrangement plan view of the bridge (dimensioned and annotated). (b) A Structural general arrangement longitudinal section through the bridge showing the major components of your bridge, as well as the foundation layout. (c) A Structural general arrangement cross section through the bridge deck. (d) Details of a major connection (in consultation with your tutors). Your final submission shall include but not be limited to: (e) Sufficient preliminary structural calculations for the bridge. (f) A separate report (A4) highlighting: the main design constraints and design assumptions used, preliminary calculations, as well as future recommendations as to how to finalise the bridge design. A construction plan highlighting the erection sequence and site logistics. (g) A DVD of all the information submitted above in digital format. At the end of this phase there will be individual design reviews, you will be allotted 15 minutes to present your final design ( you may use a power point presentation if you feel it necessary). You will be stopped if you exceed the time limit for your presentation. A further 15 minutes for questions will be allotted to your review. 6 P age
