1 Tracing air pollution and climate change effects on forest ecosystems: trend and risk assessments 5 th ICP Forests Scientific Conference May 2016 Luxembourg 2nd Announcement and Call for Abstracts
2 Invitation The 5 th ICP Forests Scientific Conference focuses on the value of long-term data in forest ecosystem research. As a matter of fact, the impact of air pollutants on forest ecosystems and their interaction with climate fluctuation and change, pests, diseases can only be substantiated by means of long-term data, allowing trends and risk analyses. The conference will concentrate on evaluation and methods with respect to both environmental drivers (such as N deposition, ozone, climate) and forest responses (like tree health and growth, nutrient contents, diversity and mycorrhizas). Issues like the sustainability of ecosystem services and forest management options are closely connected to environmental impacts and ecosystem responses and may hence be discussed. A. K The conference addresses all scientists in the field of air pollution and climate change research in forests. In particular scientists and experts from ICP Forests, the UNECE ICP community under the Working Group on Effects (WGE), partners and stakeholders, and interested scientists from related fields are encouraged to participate. Particular interest is put on projects, evaluations and modelling exercises that are based on ICP Forests data. Respective researchers are encouraged to present and discuss their work and results. Main topics Nitrogen in forest ecosystems including biodiversity issues The role of sulphur and basic cations in forest ecosystems The impact of ozone Heavy metals in forests still a challenge? Climate change effects on forests and water budget issues Background Forests represent an immense resource for our planet. They provide a number of services from the provision of wood and non-wood products to the protection of biodiversity, habitats, water resources and the regulation of atmosphere and climate processes and forests are essential for the wellbeing of the human society. The International Co-operative Programme on Assessment and Monitoring of Air Pollution Effects on Forests (ICP Forests) operates under the UNECE Convention on Long- Range Transboundary Air Pollution (CLRTAP). Established in 1985, it continuously monitors forest condition and environmental factors across Europe. The data is used by a large and still growing number of scientists investigating various policy relevant research questions.
3 Organization and Time schedule Conference structure Organization. The conference will be organized in sessions with keynotes (30 min) and standard presentations (15 min) and will offer the opportunity for mutual exchange on the state of the art. A poster session is anticipated encouraging authors to present their findings. Posters will be given a 1 minute time slot for a flash presentation. Policy and outreach. The conference will provide an overview on the latest research in policy relevant fields, such as air pollution trends, trends of response variables and interactions with climate change, as well as on nutrient and water cycles, biodiversity, and forest condition. Data provider and user interface. The conference provides an annual platform to bring together monitoring experts, researchers, and modelers. Data users will benefit from background information related to the data sets. Data providers will profit from an advanced insight into the latest statistical applications based on "their" data. Data users will be able to take advantage of getting in touch with data experts to discuss data availability and quality, as well as metadata. Expected output. A special issue of an ISI journal is anticipated. Press releases based on key results as well as technical summaries are being considered.
