2 Background China is a fascinating country, with a unique history which goes back thousands of years, and which today shows a mixture of tradition and modernity. At present, remarkable developments are seen in China in respect of economic growth - being the world's second largest economy- and in terms of technological development, having becoming a leading country in science, with a number of innovative companies. China is also a key player in the field of climate change. Apart from being a signatory of the Paris Agreement, China has been investing substantial resources in R&D with the specific aim of reducing ist CO2 emissions. It is at present the world 's largest investor on renewable energy. According to a statement prepared during the EU-China summit in Brussels in June 2017, China and the EU stated they are determined to lead the energy transition toward a low-carbon economy. Over the past years, a variety of climate change mitigation and adaptation initiatives have been undertaken across China. In addition, many investment projects to reduce CO2 emisions have been performed. But even though hundreds of projects and practical initiatives on matters related to climate change are taking place across the country today, there is a paucity of specialist events where climate change mitigation and adaptation studies and projects taking place in China are presented and discussed with an international audience and in an interdisciplinary way. It is order to address this need that the Symposium Climate Change in China is being organised. The event will gather and promote information on climate change initiatives being undertaken by Chinese scientists and by foreign scientists especially from the EU- undertaking research and projects in China. The experiences in climate change in China and what the country is concretely doing, will be helpful in COP 24 to be held in Katowice, Poland on 3rd-14th December At that event, known as "faciltative dialigue", countries are expected to report on progresses since Paris. This event, to be held a few months before COP24, will provide a solid basis upon which Chinese experiences on climate change mitigation and adaptation can be documented and disseminated to a wide audience. The event is not a public one, so participation will be by invitation. Persons and representatives from institutions from China and the EU who feel their work is relevant and an invitation should be sent to them, should contact the organising team with an abstract (see the details on abstracts submission on pages 6 and 7). It should be emphasised that the Symposium Climate Change in China is a strictly scientific event. Therefore the focus will be on science and technology related to climate change only. Aims Consistent with the need for more cross-sectoral interactions among the various stakeholders working in the field of climate change adaptation in China and the EU, the aims of the Symposium Climate Change in China are as follows: i. to provide research institutions, universities, NGOs and enterprises from China and from the EU working in China, with an opportunity to display and present their works in the field of climate change mitigation and adaptation; 2

3 ii. iii. iv. to foster the exchange of information, ideas and experiences acquired in the execution of climate change adaptation projects, especially successful initiatives and good practice; to discuss methodological approaches and experiences deriving from case studies and projects, which aim to show how the principles of climate change adaptation may be implemented in practice; to network the participants in China and the EU, and provide a platform so they can explore possibilities for cooperation. Last but not least, a further aim of the event will be to document and disseminate the wealth of experiences on climate change adaptation available today across China. To this purpose, the book Climate Change in China: Integrating Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies and Initiatives will be published, with all accepted papers. This will be a further volume of the award-winning book series Climate Change Management published by Springer, which since its creation in 2008 has become the world s leading book series on climate change management. In addition, a set of papers selected by the coordination team will be published in a special issue of the International Journal of Climate Change Strategies and Management (a fully indexed journal, also at ISI /Thomson Reuters). The decision of the editors as to which papers may be selected -and undergo peer review- for the book and for the special issue of the journal, is final. Profile of the participants Delegates attending the Symposium will come from a cross-sectoral range of areas, from both China and the EU. They are: i. officials at city, regional and national level concerned with climate change ii. researchers at universities and research centres; iii. teaching staff at universities; iv. representatives from companies v. project officers and consultants; vi. other people interested in the field. The participation of doctoral students is warmly encouraged and supervisors/advisers are kindly requested to facilitate their participation. The sort of international exposure and the rich content of this Symposium will be beneficial to their work, and their careers. Structure of the event The Symposium Climate Change in China is organised in two main strands: Strand 1. Climate Change Mitigation: including technologies relevant to industry, CO2 emissions control and abatement, climate investments, climate and transport, etc. 3

4 Strand 2. Climate Change Adaptation: including impacts to ecosystems and infrastructure,, specific solutions to sectors such as agriculture, and how to handle extreme events such as droughts and floods, among others. It is kindly reiterated that papers and presentations have a strictly scientific emphasis. The decision from the organisers as to the nature of the papers to be accepted,is final. Deadlines Deadline for submission of abstracts: 20 th March 2018 Deadline for submission of papers: 20 th June 2018 Deadline for the submission of revised papers: 30 th July 2018 Deadline for registrations: 30 th July 2018 Since the conference book is expected to be launched shortly after the event, the deadlines need to be followed. 4

5 Fees and Charges A discounted fee of 300 (plus 19% VAT) will be charged to invited delegates who register until 30 th March 2018 (early bird registration). After that, delegates will need to pay the full fee of 350 (plus 19% VAT). The reduced fee for MSc/PhD students is 200. The fee includes free lunches and coffee breaks on 12 th -13 th September 2018 and free electronic access to the book Climate Change in China: Integrating Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies and Initiatives, expected to be launched soon after the Symposium. For cancellations up 60 days before the event, a full refund will be provided. For cancellations between 59 days and 30 days, a 50% refund will be provided. For cancellations of 29 days or less no refunds are provided. This is a self-funded event and the organisers are unable to pay any travel or accommodation costs of any kind. They are however happy to issue letters of invitation to support invited delegates who have registered. UK immigration rules require that letters of invitation to enter the United Kingdom are only sent to non-registered delegates. There are no exceptions. Among other factors, the undertaking of adaptation strategies is made difficult by the general lack of awareness and spread misconceptions about the real impacts of climate change which, in turn, slow down the execution of the adaptation initiatives needed, and which may ameliorate them. This paper presents an analysis about the misconceptions related to the implementation of climate change adaptation strategies, and describes the most widespread ones, as well as their implications. A special emphasis is given to the problems and barriers caused by misinformation, which in turn- prevent the promotion of adaptation initiatives at local level. Finally, some concrete steps which may be taken in order to break the misconceptions and foster a more systematic view of adaptation strategies, are outlined. Experiences gathered in this paper will be useful to people and organisations interested in the different levels of responses given to climate changes threats, and on some of the tools which may be used to encourage specific action to adapt to changing climate conditions 7
