Synopsis GBI is developed specifically for the Malaysiantropical climate, environment and development context, cultural and social needs. Apart from being tailored to reflect the hot and humid climatic requirements, it also addresses notoriously neglected issues such as commissioning, retro-commissioning, post commissioning and sustainable maintenance. It includes the benchmarking of enhanced energy efficiency performance by means of Building Energy Intensity (BEI). 1

7 What are Green or Sustainable buildings? 1. Green buildings are designed to save energy and resources, recycle materials and minimise the emission of toxic substances throughout its life cycle, 2. They harmonise with the local climate, traditions, culture and the surrounding environment, and 3. Green buildings are able to sustain and improve the quality of human life whilst maintaining the capacity of the ecosystem at local and global levels 4.
