1 MAY 9, ASHRAE COURSE - CCBDG ASHRAE - COLD-CLIMATE BUILDINGS DESIGN GUIDE (CCBDG) The Montreal Chapter's CTTC committee invites you to participate in a course discussing the new ASHRAE guide designed to address cold climate building applications. This course will be presented by one of the authors of this ASHRAE guide. Special training course: Cold-Climate Buildings Design Guide, Short Course This presentation, presented in English only, acts as an introduction to a longer, highly technical and more advanced course that will eventually be presented by ASHRAE on the guide in question. ASHRAE Montreal provides the unique opportunity to attend a more lively and interactive presentation given by the technical director of the Cold Climate guide's development committee.
2 What will be covered in this course? Following the Cold Climate Conference held in Calgary in November 2012, ASHRAE REHVA and SCANVAC members formed a working group to produce a new Cold Climate guide. The initial proposal was to pull together the material presented during the two-day conference which contained state-ofthe-art technical solutions from North America, Scandinavia, Europe and as far away as Antarctica. Published as a collaboration effort between ASHRAE, REHVA and SCANVAC, the guide includes new material to help designers meet energy and carbon targets in sustainable ways and to improve environmental quality for those who live, work and play in cold climate regions around the world. The new ASHRAE Cold-Climate Buildings Design Guide provides a comprehensive source of technical information to assist designers achieve successful plans for cold and extreme cold climates. The guide sets out strategic approaches for various cold climate regions ranging from those that have a year round heating season extreme cold to those that have a cold climate winter but also a hot climate summer where systems must be able to heat when needed and cool when needed. Information is included to allow low and zero energy designs to be developed in order to meet the growing demand for reduced carbon emissions and reduced costs of energy used. The use of renewable energy sources is included as a way of either supplementing fossil fuels or displacing them altogether as an approach to achieve true zero carbon emissions. Designing HVAC systems for cold climates The guide provides a step by step approach to HVAC design starting with the selection and application of appropriate design conditions and weather data to systems and equipment with due attention to load control and thermal storage systems. The value of heat in cold climates is higher and therefore more attention is paid to heat recovery and re-use where cost effective. This session also covers zoning for effective control and protection of the building fabric and content during unoccupancy. Guidance on calculation methods and energy modelling is included.
3 Building Right In Cold Climates the envelope is also a Key element. This presentation shows how to achieve cost effective, high performing building envelopes walls, roofs, floors, windows, doors and how they can lead to lower cost, more efficient HVAC systems with better comfort. Commissioning in cold climates ASHRAE has developed new initiatives to promote better commissioning, including procedures which enable testing, balancing, commissioning and verification of components, equipment and systems at all stages from factory to site, to completion avoiding the last minute rush to pull things together that can and has happened. Nowhere is this more critical than in cold climates where access to equipment can be difficult and uncomfortable in winter. ASHRAE s approach, based on the most practical and cost effective steps, leads to timely and successful handovers at lowest cost and minimum post-handover defects. For a preview of the CCBDG guide, click here to see it on our website.
