1 SILVER SUSTAINABILITY AWARD 2013 Doing right suits you! WORLDS FIRST CRADLE TO CRADLE CERTIFIED COTTON WORKWEAR EN

2 WHAT IS CRADLE TO CRADLE? Cradle to Cradle workwear () has been designed in accordance with the Cradle to Cradle concept, which is based on the idea that waste is food. According to this concept, all the materials that make up a product are reused in a worthwhile way and without loss of quality to source new products after that product s first life cycle. Products are normally thrown away after use, which is a shameful waste of all the raw materials. With, the materials are taken apart after use and turned into new workwear or compost. There is therefore no waste. HOW DOES CRADLE TO CRADLE WORK? To ensure that that all constituent parts can actually be reused in new products, it is important to start thinking about what will happen to these parts at the end of a product s life cycle as early as the design phase. In order to be able to reuse the raw materials, it is necessary to ensure for example that a product does not contain any harmful chemicals and that the components can easily be separated. This approach enables the manufacturer to reuse waste - in our case old, torn or worn-out workwear - to source, for example, new workwear. The design and production of also required an intelligent approach. For example, workwear is dyed in a much more environmentally friendly way than traditional methods. As a result, the cotton thread does not contain any harmful substances, which means it can be composted or used as a raw material for making new workwear. WHY IS CRADLE TO CRADLE IMPORTANT? Raw materials are becoming scarce and products made from easily recoverable and reusable raw materials end up in waste incinerators all too often. For example, just think about all the valuable metals in mobile telephones and other electronic gadgets. After use, workwear is collected and then the fabric and sundries, such buttons, zips and clasps, are separated. The used cotton is composted or made into new yarn. The sundries are also reused. This saves raw materials and energy. In this way, opting for helps the environment and is in keeping with a sustainable procurement policy. CERTIFICATION was developed in conjunction with the EPEA (Environmental Protection and Encouragement Agency) that was set up by the founder of the Cradle to Cradle concept, Prof. Dr. Michael Braungart. The EPEA certifies Cradle to Cradle products. HAS BEEN ASSESSED AGAINST FIVE CRITERIA: Impact of materials on people s health and the environment Extent to which materials are reused Energy consumption Working conditions Working conditions CRADLE TO CRADLE HAS FIVE CERTIFICATION LEVELS Basic Bronze Silver Gold Platinum has been awarded the silver certificate a bright and innovative start to a product chain that is becoming increasingly more sustainable. LEASE CONCEPT workwear is supplied in first instance as a full-service concept. This means that your company leases the workwear from a supplier. The suppliers retain ownership of all the materials, repair and wash the clothing using environmentally friendly methods and ensure that the quality is retained. They also collect the clothing at the end of its lifespan so that it can be inspected and reused to complete the Cradle to Cradle cycle. In this way, the suppliers unburden customers and make it easier for them to purchase sustainably. SILVER - WORLDS FIRST CRADLE TO CRADLE CERTIFIED COTTON WORKWEAR

3 has been awarded the silver Cradle to Cradle certificate and is the result of a unique partnership between: workwear producer (owner of the HaVeP and Bucofa brands), textile service providers Berendsen, Lavans and Initial, waste management services provider and raw materials and energy supplier the Van Gansewinkel Group. Each company has its own role in the cycle of yarn to clothing. WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW MORE? Go to CRADLE TO CRADLE WORKWEAR () IS THE FIRST COTTON WORKWEAR THAT WILL NOT EVENTUALLY END UP IN THE DUSTBIN. IT IS DESIGNED IN SUCH A WAY THAT ALL THE CONSTITUENT PARTS CAN BE REUSED. FOR EXAMPLE, WE CAN MAKE NEW YARN OR COMPOST FROM USED WORKWEAR THAT IS RETURNED TO US. COTTON IS THE MOST IMPORTANT RAW MATERIAL FOR MAKING CRADLE TO CRADLE WORKWEAR COMPOST IS FOOD FOR PLANTS - INCLUDING, FOR EXAMPLE, COTTON PLANTS, WASTE IS THEREFOR FOOD AND THIS COMPLETES THE RECYCLING LOOP! WHEN WORKWEAR HAS TO BE REPLACED, IT IS COLLECTED AND REPARED FOR RECYCLING BY WASTE MANAGEMENT SERVICES PROVIDER THE VAN GANSEWINKEL GROUP. SUNDRIES, SUCH AS ZIPS AND BUTTONS CAN BE REUSED AS RAW MATERIALS FOR NEW PRODUCTS. THE COTTON CAN BE PROCESSED INTO YARN OR COMPOST. THE YARN FOR IS CURRENTLY SPUN FROM ORGANIC NEW GROWN COTTON. 4 THE ENVIRONMEN- TAL IMPACT OF CRADLE TO CRADLE WORKWEAR Cradle to Cradle workwear has a low environmental impact and is a vast improvement on ordinary workwear. This is illustrated in the tabel on the next page, in which is compared with workwear made from standard cotton. We have also added two alternatives to the table: workwear made from organically grown cotton and workwear made from a combination of Tencel and polyester fibres. Tencel is a natural, environmentally friendly fibre made from eucalyptus wood. LESS USE OF CHEMICALS The environmental impact of the different types of workwear is depicted as a colour matched to a number. The lower the number, the better the environmental impact. After taking all the relevant data into consideration, was awarded the highest score. For example, take the way in which the fabrics for are dyed. As opposed to the normal dyeing process, no harmful chemicals are used. As a result, the cotton thread and the workwear it is made into do not contain any harmful chemicals either. Added peace of mind for the people who wear it. In addition, because it is not necessary to remove any harmful substances first, garments can easily be recycled. In short, is the environmentally friendly option. 5 DID YOU KNOW THAT: 1 59% of people in the Netherlands would like to know how sustainable their clothing is. Because of the lack of information, many people are unable to find out (source: Sustainability Compass, April 2012). 2 In the Netherlands, 140 million kilos of clothing is incinerated as residual waste every year. This is obviously a waste of all those valuable raw materials. Luckily, used workwear and other clothing is increasingly being collected and, for example, recycled as chair stuffing. In the Netherlands, the total recycled volume has reached 67 million kilos per year (Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment, March 2013). 3 In Europe, 5.8 million tonnes of textile is thrown away every year; 75% of this ends up in landfill sites or in a waste incinerator, only 25% is recycled (Less is More Report, Friends of the Earth, 2013). 4 Recycling one tonne of cotton T-shirts reduces CO2 emissions by 12 tonnes (Less is More Report, Friends of the Earth, 2013). 5 Employees regard their employer more favourably if the company is actively involved in sustainability (source: Effectory and VNU Vacancy Media, August 2012). 6 Companies that adopt sustainable business practices achieve better results (4.8% more profit) than companies that do not (source: Harvard University, February 2012). 7 meets the government s sustainability criteria for purchasing industrial clothing (source: AgentschapNL Industrial Clothing Criteria Document, October 2011), because: 8 complies with Öko-Tex 100, Class 2. 96% of all the fabric used in has been Öko-Tex certified, Class 1 and 2. The remaining 4% is currently undergoing certification. 9 has a closed raw material cycle and therefore meets the selection criteria for collection and recycling, which is preferred to normal waste processing, such as incineration. 10 meets the selection criteria in local legislation and regulations and complies with additional requirements related to the use of energy, chemicals and water. The supplier is also ISO 9001 and ISO certified. 11, the supplier of, strives to achieve fair working conditions in the supply chain. In addition to adhering to Cradle to Cradle guidelines, is a longstanding member of the Fair Wear Foundation, which inspects working conditions in the global textile industry. The Fair Wear Foundation is the only social initiative in the textile industry that is recognised by the Dutch government. 12 As soon as used workwear is recycled into new cotton thread, it also complies with the selection criterion for recycled fibres. Fabrics made from fibres of this type are preferred to normal fabrics. 13 The raw materials from which is made are not harmful to people or the environment. Unlike most other clothing, does not contain any toxic dye residues, for example. 14 The working conditions in the workshops where is made are inspected by the supplier every year. The Fair Wear Foundation carries out additional independent inspections to verify whether the workers are treated fairly and to ensure that child labour, excessive working hours, exploitation or unsafe situations do not occur. 15 The fabric quality and colour-fastness are just as good as that of standard cotton workwear. 16 The price of is comparable with standard cotton workwear. 17 trousers, jackets, Bermuda shorts, overalls, bib & brace overalls, polo shirts and polo sweaters are now available in six different colours. It is also possible for you to compile your own collection. 18 The founder of the Cradle to Cradle concept, Professor Michael Braungart, launched in December 2012, saying: It s real quality workwear, not just sustainable. 19 was developed through a unique collaboration of different partners. As illustrated on our website, each company has a specific role to play in the cotton thread to workwear cycle. In September 2012, chose to turn off the gas. The company s premises are now heated by a modern woodfired boiler. The boiler burns wood chippings (a renewable fuel) and has been installed in the former boiler house of the textile factory together with the filter units and hot-water buffer. In the future, it will even be possible - if the necessary permits are given - to supply this form of sustainable energy to the buildings and houses on the adjoining properties. As an added bonus, smoke can once again be seen coming out of the grand, old, monumental chimney (built in 1889) of the factory in Goirle. 8 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS & ANSWERS CRADLE TO CRADLE WORKWEAR 1. WHAT IS? Cradle to Cradle workwear is the first cotton industrial clothing that will not eventually end up in the dustbin. It is designed in such a way that all the constituent parts can be reused. For example, we can make new yarn or compost from old workwear that is returned to us. WE RE GOING FOR GOLD! Our objective is to obtain gold EPEA certification for in the future, for example, by using organically grown cotton and by increasing the proportion of green energy used during the production process to offset our CO2 emissions. 4. HOW SUSTAINABLE IS? 2. WHAT IS CRADLE TO CRADLE? Cradle to Cradle is more than recycling. Smart solutions were used from the outset in its design and production. The way in which workwear is dyed is, for example, much more environmentally friendly than traditional methods. As a result, the cotton thread does not contain any harmful substances, which means it can be used as a raw material for making new workwear. And that is precisely the idea behind the Cradle to Cradle: waste is food. 3. WHY HAS BEEN AWAR- DED THE CRADLE TO CRADLE SILVER CERTIFICATE? Cradle to Cradle workwear was developed in conjunction with the EPEA (Environmental Protection and Encouragement Agency), which is a certifying body set up by the founder of the Cradle to Cradle concept: Professor Michael Braungart. CLOTHING IS ASSESSED AGAINST FIVE CRITERIA: 1. Impact of materials on people s health and the environment 2. Extent to which materials are reused 3. Energy consumption 4. Water consumption 5. Working conditions Cradle to Cradle has five certification levels: basic, bronze, silver, gold and platinum. The EPEA recently awarded the silver certificate to a bright and innovative start to a product chain that is becoming increasingly more sustainable. Sustainability involves taking people and the environment into account. is more sustainable than most workwear for a number of reasons: None of the raw materials used to make, such as the dyes, are harmful to people or the environment. As opposed to most other clothing, does not therefore contain any toxic chemicals, such as dye residues. Added peace of mind for the people who wear it. And you do not have to extract any hazardous substances from the clothing. This means can easily be recycled. The working conditions in the workshops where is made are inspected by the supplier every year. The Fair Wear Foundation carries out additional independent inspections to verify whether the workers are treated fairly and to ensure that child labour, excessive working hours, exploitation or unsafe situations do not occur. The textile service provider that leases you washes the garments using environmentally friendly methods. Waste management services provider Van Gansewinkel collects the workwear at the end of its lifespan and recycles the garments as compost or cotton thread for new clothing. 5. WHAT MATERIALS IS MADE FROM? We use 26 different raw materials to make the fabric. The most important material is cotton. We also use products to pre-treat the cotton and dye it in specific colours, and for finishing the garments. All the raw materials have been assessed by the EPEA and they comply with the strict Cradle to Cradle requirements. - WORLDS FIRST CRADLE TO CRADLE CERTIFIED COTTON WORKWEAR

9 This means they do not contain any substances that are harmful to people or the environment, ensuring that the workwear can easily be recycled. 6. WHAT IS THE QUALITY OF RE- WORK? The fabric quality and colour-fastness are just as good as standard cotton workwear. is designed and made in such a way to last at least as long as standard workwear. is also comfortable to wear and practical to use. 7. HOW OFTEN CAN YOU WASH RE- WORK? comes back from industrial laundries in excellent condition and can withstand the minimum number of washes for standard workwear. 8. WHAT DOES THE RANGE CONSIST OF? workwear is now available in six different colours. New colours are under development. The range consists of trousers, jackets, Bermuda shorts, overalls, bib & brace overalls, polo shirts and polo sweaters. You can also design your own Cradle to Cradle models with materials. 9. HOW DO THE COSTS COMPARE WITH STANDARD PRODUCTS? The prices match the prices of standard cotton workwear. A price in line with market trends is an important criterion in the (on-going) development of. Sustainable workwear has to be affordable for everyone. Only in this way can make a major contribution to sustainability. We would be pleased to draw up a personalised quote for you. 10. HOW DOES THE COLLECTION PRO- CESS WORK? When garments reach the end of their life cycle, they are collected by the textile service providers and sent to Van Gansewinkel. Van Gansewinkel is responsible for separating the fabric and the sundries. The fabric is subsequently recycled as compost or new cotton thread. The sundries are reused in new workwear, closing the Cradle to Cradle loop. 11. IS WORKWEAR CUR- RENTLY BEING MADE FROM OLD WORKWEAR? was launched in December As soon as a sufficient quantity of used clothing has been collected, we will start making new thread and compost from old cotton. This will reduce the environmental impact of even further. 12. HOW DOES RATE IN THE DUTCH GOVERNMENT S SUSTAINA- BILITY CRITERIA FOR PURCHASING INDUSTRIAL CLOTHING? The government wishes to purchase sustainable industrial clothing and has drawn up specific criteria in this respect.
