Energy Strategy in the European Metropolitan Region of Nuremberg Dr. Peter Pluschke, Deputy Mayor for Environment and Health Erich Maurer, Managing Director ENERGYregion Ltd.

Energy challenges in the European Metropolitan area of Nuremberg (EMN) How can we improve the use of renewable energies? How can we use more energy efficient technologies? How can we reduce the emissions in the traffic sector? In the EMN these questions have to be solved for rural and urban areas under economical frame conditions. Slide 2

e.g. Carbon Dioxide Report for the city of Nuremberg C O 2 to in s n s io is m e C O d s n sa u o T h CO 2 emissions and forecast 40% CO 2 emissions reduction adjusted for weather -27,5% -40 % Waste Disposal Transportation Coal Heating Oil CHP District Heating 500 Gas Electricity The council of the City of Nuremberg decided to reach a 40% decrease of CO 2 -emissons in 2020 in comparison to 1990 Slide 3

Experience with fuel cells and stirling CHP`s in EMN Fuel cell Stirling CHP Source: ASUE ONSI fuel cell in an apartment building with 200 units, currently disconnected Source: ASUE Stirling CHP in a district heating system- currently disconnected Development of a new stirling CHP within a research project Slide 4

Improving District Heating (e.g. city of Nuremberg) Every kwh district heating reduces the CO2-emissions of Nuremberg CO 2 -emissions coefficient in to CO 2 permwh districe heat 0,8 0,6 0,4 0,2 0-0,2-0,4 CO 2 -emission coefficient for district heat CHP Sandreuth 0,657 0,7 0,716 0,228 0,244 0,248 0,55 0,166 0, Change in technology and energy source 0,492-0,284-0,192 verified without electricity credit / with disposal emissions verified with electricity credit/ without disposal emissions forecast without electricity credit / with disposal emissions forecast with electricity credit / without disposal emissions Slide 5

Experience with trigeneration in EMN Problem: Reduction of district heating because of improved building standard. This will lead to higher CO2- emissions. Solution: The usage of district heating for cooling purposes (trigeneration). This will lead to a higher profitability and lower CO2 emissions. Interesting for e.g. banking houses, hospitals, offices, fairs, airports; Source: ASUE Slide 6

Improving the use of Renewables in traffic sector E-mobility Introduction of e-velos in the city of Nuremberg; Implementing PV-systems in car parks to charge e-cars; Use of non emitting vehicles; Source: solid Slide 7

Research Project to reduce thermal energy Heating energy requirement kwh/(m²*a) up to EnEV-requirement for existing buildings EnEV-requirement for new buildings EnEV minus 30 % Factor 10 EnEV minus 50 % Energy-optimised standard 1. 1st German Thermal Insulation Ordinance 2. WSVO 3. WSVO EnEV 2002 Passive House standard Share of dwellings (%) ARENHA 1993, IWU 1994, Bundesarchitektenkammer 1995, Schulze Darup 1998/ Slide 8

Energy efficiency and Smart Metering in the city of Nuremberg The new German law requires smart metering in new buildings (starting in 2010). Planning a research project for smart metering in a refurbishment (800 units) and new building area in the northern part of Nuremberg. Slide 9

Energy efficiency and Green IT in the city of Nuremberg Reducing energy consumption in data centers of the public and parastatal sector. the regional energy supplier achieved a 40% reduction in energy consumption in his data center (2.600 MWh/a) The results will be used in the data centers in the city administration facilities of Nuremberg, the public hospitals, the exhibition corporation, airport. Reducing energy consumption in private data centers in Nuremberg (datev, gfk, BfA, ) Slide 10
