5 Bureau of Meteorology The Bureau is Australia s national weather, climate and water information agency operating under the Meteorology Act 1955 and the Water Act 2007 contributes to all aspects of disaster management planning, preparation, response and recovery works with state disaster managers and local governments in order to routinely provide the best possible advice and warning service

12 Modernisation and Extension of Hydrologic Monitoring Systems Program The Australian Government's Modernisation and Extension of Hydrologic Monitoring Systems Program has been administered by the Bureau of Meteorology. 13 Business Need: Water balance in retrospect The Bureau of Meteorology requires: a national water balance modelling system that quantifies retrospective water storage and water flux terms and their respective uncertainties, from observation and modelled data, using state-of-the-art science and technology

14 Australian Water Resource Assessments The Australian Water Resources Assessment 2010 includes comprehensive information on the nation s surface water resources and more limited information on its groundwater resources. Information is presented in the form of maps, graphs and tables with an accompanying narrative. 13 Regional chapters

15 AWRA Reporting: Aims 1. To monitor hydrological state, condition and use of SW and GW 2. To highlight patterns, trends and variability in water availability, quality and use 3. To serve a variety of data and information needs 4. To provide hydrometric statistics of key reference sites 5. To provide readily interpretable maps, figures and tables

16 AWRA Reporting: Conceptual framework 1. National (continental) reporting Focus on most recent water year modelled water cycle, climate drivers, weather extremes, rainfall deficiencies and floods 2. Top-level reporting regions defined by drainage divisions Trend analyses of water cycle elements (+ key reference sites) 3. Sub-regional reporting Time-series analyses of water availability, use and quality in key areas (cities, irrigation districts, wetlands)

21 Rainfall Intensity-Frequency-Duration The current IFD s are being revised The current IFD s were: Developed by Bureau of Meteorology over 20 years ago Used data from the Bureau s network of daily read and pluviograph stations Focused on the design of structures on relatively large rural catchments, durations of less than one hour were not considered necessary.

22 Rainfall Intensity-Frequency-Duration Revised IFDs will be provided for Durations of 1 minute to 120 hours (5 days) with advice on how to extrapolate to less than 1 minute and greater than 5 days Annual Exceedance Probabilities to 1%. Consistent advice provided on blending revised IFDs with CRCFORGE estimates, derived by each state, to enable smooth rainfall frequency curve to be derived to an AEP of 0.05%. Revised IFDs will be disseminated In electronic form Via new web page accessed from Bureau of Meteorology website IFD estimates will be gridded to be available for any point in Australia. Launch in September 2012

26 Australian Climate Observations Reference Network Surface Air Temperature ACORN-SAT dataset has been developed for monitoring climate variability and change in Australia. 112 locations across Australia that provide high-quality, ground-based temperature records.
