JOINT PROJECT : NIGLAS (NANJING INSTITUTE OF GEOGRAPHY & LIMNOLOGY, CHINESE ACADEMY OF SCIENCES) PYHÄJÄRVI INSTITUTE AND UNIVERSITY OF HELSINKI FUNDED BY CHINESE ACADEMY OF SCIENCES AND ACADEMY OF FINLAND Research group in Nanjing in spring 2014.

JIANMING DENG (PHD STUDENT NOORA HELLÉN (PHD STUDENT) LAURI HAPPO (RESEARCHER/RESEARCH ASSISTANT) JUHA NIEMISTÖ (POST DOC) MARJO TARVAINEN (POST DOC) TEIJA KIRKKALA (PHD STUDENT/POST DOC) TERO FORSMAN (RESEARCHER ASSISTANT) TIMO RUOKONEN (POST DOC) PÄIVI LAINE (POST DOC) RESEARCH PERSONNEL (OTHER FUNDING THAN AKA) TIMO HUTTULA (PROFESSOR), FINNISH ENVIRONMENT INSTITUTE JANNE ROPPONEN (RESEARCHER), FINNISH ENVIRONMENT INSTITUTE ARI JOLMA (PROFESSOR), AALTO UNIVERSITY/ PYHÄJÄRVI INSTITUTE JAN WECKSTRÖM (RESEARCHER), HELSINKI UNIVERSITY SUSANNE AMSINCK (RESEARCHER), NERI/UNIVERSITY OF ÅRHUS

THE AIMS OF THE PROJECT ARE: 1) TO IMPROVE THE POSSIBILITIES TO SECURE THE ECOSYSTEM SERVICES PROVIDED BY LAKE TAIHU AND LAKE PYHÄJÄRVI ALSO UNDER CHANGING CLIMATE 2) TO ELUCIDATE THE PROCESSES INVOLVED HEREIN BASED ON NEW EXPERIMENTS AND ANALYSES OF DATA FROM THE LAKES 3) INCREASE THE POSSIBILITIES TO ADAPT THE RESTORATION MEASURES TO THE LEVEL DEMANDED BY CLIMATE CHANGE 4) INCREASE RESEARCH CO-OPERATION BETWEEN CHINA AND FINLAND IN THE FIELD OF AQUATIC STUDIES

THIS PROJECT HAS FOCUSED ON: LINKING HYDROLOGIC, BIOLOGICAL AND BIOGEOCHEMICAL CHANGES WITH UNDERLYING CLIMATOLOGICAL DRIVERS IN TWO GEOGRAPHICALLY DISTINCT BUT FUNCTIONALLY RELATIVELY SIMILAR SHALLOW SYSTEMS, LAKE PYHÄJÄRVI IN FINLAND AND LAKE TAIHU IN CHINA.

PROJECT ACTIONS AND RESULTS

1) ELUCIDATING THE LONG-TERM CHANGES IN THE BIOLOGICAL STRUCTURE OF REFERENCE SYSTEMS PYHÄJÄRVI AND TAIHU PALEOLIMNOLOGICAL STUDIES AND COMPARISON BETWEEN LAKES IN FINLAND AND IN CHINA: DIFFERENT LAND USES ECOSYSTEM SCALE CHANGES FOUND. LAND USE IMPACT CLEAR IN CHINA, BUT ALSO FOUND IN FINLAND. PALELIMNOLOGICAL EUTROPHICATION HISTORY OF LAKE PYHÄJÄRVI ECOSYSTEM SCALE CHANGES, COMBINATION OF HUMAN AND CLIMATE EFFECTS PHYTOPLANKTON COMMUNITY STUDY, DATA MINING IN PYHÄJÄRVI RELATED MORE TO CLIMATE (SINCE 80 S), IN CHINA TO LAND USE AND HUMAN IMPACT

2) EVALUATING THE ROLE OF INTERNAL LOAD WITH SCENARIOS OF CHANGES IN WIND FORCING FIELD FOR BOTH SHALLOW REFERENCE SYSTEMS AND EXPLORE THE EFFECTS ON LAKE EUTROPHICTION AND ECOSYSTEM STRUCTURE WAVE MEASUREMENTS WITH THE TECHNIQUES THAT HAVE NOT BEEN EARLIER USED IN FINLAND HYDROLOGICAL MODELLING + NEW DATA EVALUATING THE STABILIZING ROLE OF MACROPHYTES IN NUTRIENT DYNAMICS UNDER STRESS CAUSED BY CLIMATE CHANGE AND EUTROPHICATION RESUSPENSION MEASUREMENTS MACROPHYTES HAVE STABILIZING EFFECT ON RESUSPENSION MORE EXACT INFORMATION ON INTERNAL LOAD IN THE SYSTEMS IMPLICATIONS TO FUTURE ADAPTATION TO CLIMATE CHANGE, ROLE OF MACROPHYTES

3) TO IMPROVE THE POSSIBILITIES TO SECURE THE ECOSYSTEM SERVICES PROVIDED BY LAKE TAIHU AND LAKE PYHÄJÄRVI ALSO UNDER CHANGING CLIMATE, INCREASE THE POSSIBILITIES TO ADAPT THE RESTORATION MEASURES TO THE LEVEL DEMANDED BY CLIMATE CHANGE COMPARISON OF RESTORATION AIMS AND IMPLEMENTATION EVALUATION OF RESTORATION RESULT DESCRIBING THE INSTITUTIONS OF RESTORATION IN CHINA AND FINLAND DESCRIBING THE KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER SYSTEM BETWEEN SCIENCE AND PRACTICAL IMPLEMENTATION IN FINLAND, CLIMATE CHANGE HAS ALREADY INFLUENCED THE EFFECTIVENESS OF WATER PROTECTION MEASURES, AS THE TIMING AND INTENSITY OF EXTERNAL LOAD HAS ALREADY CHANGED.

IN CHINA THE LAND USE AND HUMAN IMPACT IS THE MAIN CHALLENGE, ALTHOUGH THE CLIMATE WILL HAVE IMPACT ON LAKE MANAGEMENT ALSO THERE, ESPECIALLY IN AGRICULTURAL CATCHMENTS. VERY USEFUL KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE AND NEW IDEAS CREATED AND CHANGED BETWEEN PYHÄJÄRVI AND TAIHU PRACTICAL FUTURE CO-OPERATION BETWEEN PYHÄJÄRVI INSTITUTE, NIGLAS, TAIHU BASIN AUTHORITY, UNIVERSITY OF HELSINKI, FINNISH ENVIRONMENTAL INSTITUTE EXTERNAL LOAD CONTROL PROTECTION FUND CONCEPT AND OTHER PARTICIPATORY METHODS

CHINESE AND FINNISH RESEARCH COLLABORATION GROUPS HAVE BEEN WORKING TOGETHER WITH COMBINED LAKE DATA, LEARNING AND COMPARING METHODS AND RESULTS. VERY USEFUL AND FRUITFUL CO-OPERATION, STILL IN EARLY PHASE BUT BOTH SIDES ARE WILLING TO CONTINUE THE WORK TOGETHER WIDE NETWORK OF RESEARCHER WITH OTHER FUNDING INVOLVED IN FINLAND AND CHINA (FINNISH ENVIRONMENT INSTITUTE, AALTO UNIVERSITY, SHANGHAI OCEAN UNIVERSITY, OTHER GROUPS IN NIGLAS) CONTACTS AND CO-OPERATION WITH JAPANESE SCIENTIST IN OKAYAMA UNIVERSITY VISITS TO OTHER RESEARCH INSTITUTES IN CHINA. CO-OPERATION HAS EXPANDED TO OTHER LAKES AND AREAS QIANDAO LAKE FOOD WEB STUDIES SHANGHAI OCEAN UNIVERSITY + LOCAL EPA
