PERVIOUS CONCRETE Presented by Tom Evans, Executive Director of the Maryland Ready Mix Concrete Association February 5, 2014
The Maryland Ready Mix Concrete Association (MRMCA) is a Registered Provider with The American Institute of Architects Continuing Education Systems. Credit earned on completion of this program will be reported to CES Records for AIA members. Certificates of Completion for non-aia members are available on request. This program is registered with the AIA/CES for continuing professional education. As such, it does not include content that may be deemed or construed to be an approval or endorsement by the AIA of any material of construction or any method or manner of handling, using, distributing or dealing in any material or product. Questions related to specific materials, methods and services will be addressed at the conclusion of this presentation.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES Pervious concrete pavements are part of an engineered system for managing storm water for supporting traffic loads Current recommendations, specifications and standards Local projects and resources
Today s presentation Properties Applications Reasons Design Projects Resources

Properties of Pervious Concrete A Portland Cement Concrete mixture 15% to 25% air voids 100 to 120 lbs/ft 3 unit weight Mix should be designed and accepted based on air void structure and unit weight criteria Consider the placing equipment
Driveways Roads Parking Lots Critical Sites Erosion Control New Development
Why Pervious Concrete? Conserve Water Resources Treat / Control / Reduce Runoff Combine with Drainage Facilities Lower Urban Heat Islands Green Building Practice Land Utilization Environmental Compliance Overall Project Cost
Why Cost Savings to Municipalities / Owners Westminster, MD 5 acres of pervious Owner saved $400K Eliminated 1 ½ acre pond
Why Pervious Concrete? Permeable pavements typically consist of a porous surface course and open graded stone base/subbase or sand drainage system. Stormwater drains through the surface course, is captured in the drainage system, and infiltrates into the surrounding soils. Permeable pavements significantly reduce the amount of impervious cover, provide water quality and groundwater recharge benefits, and may help mitigate temperature increases.
