1 Renewable Energy Project Development Programme (PDP) Sub-Saharan Africa German Solar Training Week - renewables - Made in Germany initiative Date: November 2015 Organizers: renewables Made in Germany initiative / Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH 2 nd German Solar Training Week 2015 From the 3 rd to the 6 th of November 2015, the renewables Made in Germany initiative will facilitate trainings conducted by German companies in the context of the German Solar Training Week (GSTW). The topics of the GSTW 2015 are Appropriate Applications of PV Systems, Batteries in PV Systems, Utility Scale PV Systems, Off-Grid PV Systems. Participants gain the following benefits by attending the GSTW: Build capacity in the technical and financial aspects of Grid-connected and Off-Grid Systems, Monitoring of Utility Scale PV Systems and Battery Technologies for PV-Systems Identify new business partnerships with reliable German companies Facilitators:

2 Strengthen existing partnerships with German companies Participants may attend the programme during the entire week or only choose individual sessions. A cost contribution of 300 cedi applies for the four training days and includes lunch. Each session is explained further below and the respective target groups are outlined. Thus, participants from local solar firms, industrial companies with an interest to install PV on their premises and distribution utilities can acquire important know-how that is relevant for the implementation of solar PV systems. Furthermore, the training serves to provide background knowledge on how to approach banks and equity investors. Furthermore regulatory authorities and policy makers can learn to better understand the technical specifics of a wide range of PV system applications. General background The market for solar energy in Ghana is growing, with the government putting in place ambitious strategic policies and regulations to encourage the use of Photovoltaics (PV) in order to meet the rising national electricity demand. Economically viable alternatives to the use of existing fossil fuels include PV stand-alone systems in various sizes as well as off-grid systems and battery technology. German companies have gained broad experience in developing and applying these technologies as well as in providing engineering services that are relevant to the Ghanaian market. Key to the expansion of these technologies and services in the Ghanaian market is the building of local capacity as well as the establishment of business partnerships that include the Ghanaian solar industry, local power generation companies and the public sector.
