In 2010 nearly 17% (more than 100 TWH) of Germany's electricity supply was produced from renewable energy sources. On a global comparison, the German PV market is the largest. Approximately 50% of the PV production technology applied globally originates from German machine and installation producers. Nowadays, every third solar panel is made in Germany. Source: BSW-Solar Quality as driver for sustainable market growth Quality is an important driver for the sustainable growth of the German solar PV market. One lesson learnt from more than 20 years experience is that this can only be guaranteed if the entire system works efficiently. From the selection of most advanced technology to professional planning, engineering, construction, operation and maintenance to certification, monitoring and training: Every stage of project development offers opportunities to reduce the risk of project failure, to increase the output by better performance and strengthen the long term profitability. Quality made in Germany is supported by political framework conditions and strong institutions which establish standards as competitive advantage in the international market.

2 The Thailand Solar Market The Asia and Pacific region shows an increasing trend in PV electricity system installations. Declining system prices, heightened awareness, favourable policies and the sustained use of solar power for rural electrification projects are some of the reasons for the development in the different countries. In Thailand the solar PV market is moving fast. Many large-scale projects are in the pipeline with more than 100 MW installed in According to the Thailand PV Status Report 2011 there is a need for research and development concerning the entire life cycle of PV modules and a collaboration among different stakeholders in the Thai PV community. PV cell materials with higher conversion efficiency, PV reliability field test and life cycle assessment in a tropical climate, performance improvement of PV systems, recycling PV panels and the use of PV in energy efficient homes are areas to explore. The question arises how not only a quantitative but also a qualitative market growth as seen in Germany - can be assured in Thailand. Performance analysis is the first step for quality assurance: Performance orientation helps to identify how the different stages within the life cycle of a solar PV project impact the long term profitability. Objective of the workshop The objective of the workshop is to increase the awareness for performance orientation at all stages of grid connected solar PV projects. The impact of quality on performance and profitability are key topics to be explored and discussed with a clear focus on technological and economic questions. Different players of the solar PV market in Thailand and Germany share their fact-based and practical insights from the public and private sector perspective. The solar quality workshop is the first part of a comprehensive package of events at the RE Asia by the renewables Made in Germany initiative. It is followed by the German Renewable Energy Day on 7 June 2012 at the German Pavilion. Target group The workshop targets representatives and decision makers from companies and business organizations in the field of solar PV as well as representatives from government and public administration active in the promotion of renewable energies. It addresses representatives involved in the different project stages and/or in charge of quality, performance and profitability. The renewables Made in Germany initiative The solar quality workshop forms part of the renewables Made in Germany initiative by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi). The BMWi has commissioned the the German-Bilateral Chambers of Commerce (AHKs) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH to jointly implement the initiative s regional activities in South-East Asia. The renewables Made in Germany initiative aims at sharing knowledge and technology and creating business partnerships and sector-specific networks between German and South-East Asian companies and business associations in order to join forces to maximize project opportunities in the field of renewable energies.
