1 2012 Build Ohio Award Winner Industrial/Heavy Category AGC of Ohio AWARD WINNING PROJECT Location Lima, Ohio Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Architectural Engineering $7.4 million Project Funding Funded 100% through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Professional Services 2009 Construction: 2011 Rich Hertzfeld P.E., Project Manager Greg Bieszczad, P.E. Dan Supinski Jeff Yoder P.E., Bridge Engineer Dan Knott P.E., Electrical Engineer VINE STREET GRADE SEPARATION AND STORM WATER PUMP STATION City of Lima PDG was part of the design team hired by the City of Lima to prepare construction plans for the grade elimination of Vine Street and the Norfolk-Southern and CSX Railroads within the City. The project provided a means for emergency and local traffic to underpass these tracks during frequent periods of train stops. The design was completed within an aggressive four-month schedule. PDG was responsible for all approach underpass pavement and all relocated public utilities, including drainage. PDG prepared detailed design plans for a 10,000 GPM storm water pump station and retention basin that outlets into the existing combined sewer system at limited flow rates. All civil, mechanical, electrical and architectural services were provided as required for the pump station and approach work. The project was funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (stimulus funding), with the ODOT, FHWA, and the City of Lima providing administration and traditional staged reviews. PDG designed all aspects of the project in-house including site, structural, architectural, mechanical, process utilities and electrical. Some of the special systems include a 500-ton chilled and cooling water system which has a free cooling cycle for non-mechanical cooling 50% of all operating hours, custom designed facility management system, 650 PSIG compressed air system, economizer cycle with comparative enthalpy control and building pressurization, high voltage substation and distribution system. Extension of the campus high pressure steam and condensate return systems to the new building for a new 8545 Lb / Hr distribution system for close tolerance climate control including; pipe stress analysis, dual pressure reducing stations, freeze proof steam coils in building pressurization units. 3 I was pleased to be working with Poggemeyer on this project from day one, said Mr. Rogers. The staff s communication and teamwork were critical to securing funding and developing the affordable, efficient system we need. Location Mt. Gilead, Ohio Environmental and Electrical Engineering, Construction Administration $7.24 million - Engineer s Estimate $7.5 million - Construction Size MGD Average Daily Design Flow 3.20 MGD Peak Daily Design Flow Completed: 2006 Jack Jones, P.E., Principal-in-Charge Michael Atherine, P.E., Project Manager Steve Wonderly, P.E., Project Engineer Dan Knott, P.E., Electrical Engineer MOUNT GILEAD WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT PDG worked with the Village of Mount Gilead to explore affordable options to expand and upgrade its wastewater treatment plant. The main objective was to eliminate EPA violations while optimizing operating costs at the activated sludge facility. Various design alternatives for mixing and aeration of the waste activated sludge were evaluated. PDG compared complete aeration systems with various combinations of aeration and hydraulic mixing methods and helped the Village select an innovative system with an aerobic digester and sludge holding tank design using fine bubble aeration combined with hydraulic mixing. The project also included a 610 KW standby diesel generator system. The new system has an increased digester loading capability to effectively digest thicker solids up to five-percent, thereby minimizing aeration and decreasing the maximum total online horsepower from 270 to 210. The Village has reported a savings of $40,000 per year in operation costs, as well as an additional estimated savings of $128,000 through optimized energy consumption within the digestion process. more... 4 Mount Gilead Wastwater Treatment Plant Expansion and Upgrades The system, which is being considered as a case study in USEPA s forthcoming sludge manual, included two new 62-foot aerobic digester holding tanks and an existing 45-foot diameter digester tank. The aeration and mixing system exceeded design expectations, leaving the second tank available to be used as a standby sludge holding tank with the added benefit of an installed hydraulic jet mixing system. The electrical design involved modifications to the existing 480-volt distribution system to keep the existing plant in operation while the new plant was being built around it. Existing equipment for portions of the plant were incorporated into the new facility and were reconnected to the new electrical distribution system. The design also included site lighting, building lighting, power distribution, a 750KW standby generator and grounding. The existing electrical service was relocated to a new location to serve the facility. PDG was invited to give a presentation on innovative wastewater treatment technology at the Water Environment Federation s Annual Technical Exhibition and Conference held in Chicago.
5 Location Wood County, Ohio Electrical, Environmental, Finance, Construction Administration 204,000 Professional Services: 2007 Construction: 2008 PDG Denise Plummer, P.E., Environmental Engineer Daniel Knott, Electrical Engineer N EAST BROADWAY PUMP STATION BACKUP POWER SUPPLY NORTHWESTERN WATER AND SEWER DISTRICT The Northwestern Water and Sewer District worked with PDG to replace its backup power source to one of the main water pump stations between the City of Toledo and the District. The pump station serves approximately 10,000 industrial, commercial and residential users in highly developed areas of Wood County and the Cities of Rossford and Perrysburg. PDG designed a new system that automatically transfers power to a 450 KW diesel engine generator and provides for the system to run during instances of power failure. The new system also included an Automatic Transfer Switch connection, electrical service, equipment modifications and a new SCADA (telemetry) system for remote monitoring of the station. The new 450KW diesel engine electric generator significantly improves the water distribution system s reliability to provide adequate flow during power outages at this pump station, and therefore meets the recommendations of the Ohio EPA. PDG also helped obtain Ohio Public Works Commission Capital Improvement Funds to assist with the project cost.
