Innovations in Energy Efficiency Transmission & Distribution Advances Helping to Meet Energy Demands of 21st Century Jim Greer Chief Operating Officer Oncor Electric Delivery 2012 Summer Seminar August 5-7, 2012
Our Company Oncor is the largest Texas utility and sixth-largest utility in the U.S. Owns and operates ~117,000 miles of transmission and distribution lines ~8 million customers Top quartile performance in safety, reliability, and operating costs Invested more than $3 billion in transmission over last 10 years Leveraging advanced technologies ERCOT Market Structure Generation Transmission & Distribution Retail Competitive Regulated Competitive 2
Facilitating Growth in Texas Texas faces the challenge of increasing energy demand, while keeping costs affordable, ensuring reliability and minimizing environmental impact Texas added more than 4 million people over the past 10 years; population expected to increase 82 percent by 2060 = Resource adequacy issues (energy, water, etc.) ERCOT predicts peak demand will increase by 10 percent between now and 2015 Source: Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts 3
ERCOT Resource Adequacy 4
All of the Above Includes Demand-side Resource adequacy is typically focused on the supply side of the equation, which has been a challenge in Texas Clean air rules Drought/water scarcity ERCOT competitive market structure But demand-side advances that Oncor and other utilities have been making today can help consumers save money, improve reliability and reduce supply-side constraints 5
Our Investments: Solving Real Problems Building more than 1,000 miles of the CREZ transmission grid to help meet increasing demand with wind power and other energy sources Installing advanced meters to help customers better manage their energy usage and improve operational efficiency Leveraging advanced technology to keep pace with the operational demands of a 21 st century economy: Distribution automation Dynamic transmission line ratings FACTS technology 6
CREZ Transmission Build-out In 2005, the Texas Legislature launched plans for developing transmission infrastructure to meet growing electric demands by tapping Texas wind and solar power, with the identification of Competitive Renewable Energy Zones (CREZ) Oncor is one of eight companies currently involved in the construction and development process of CREZ transmission lines, on track for completion by year end 2013 Texas posted a 13 percent increase in energy generated by renewable sources in 2011 ERCOT set a new wind power record on March 18, 2012 (7,917 MW; 24% of load at the time) 7
Advanced Meters More than 2.9 million advanced meters installed On track for 2012 completion System handling ~9 billion transactions per month Common Texas Web Portal launched March 2010 Green Button compatible June 2012 Since March 2009, have executed 4.5 million service orders remotely Eliminating 22.5 million miles driven Saving 1.9 million gallons of fuel and 18,000 tons of CO 2 Biggest Energy Saver contest launched in 2011 to promote benefits Average savings of 26 percent for the top 10 percent of all contestants 8
Advanced Meters: Enhancing Reliability Oncor s Outage Management System (OMS) integrated to AMS March 2012 ~3% are meter removals, transformer clearances, tampering, data model, etc. Approximately 20% of outages are resolved without a customer ever calling in the outage About 7% are found to be power quality issues that would have resulted in an outage 90% are confirmed outages To date, there have been no unexplained false positives 9
Empowering Customer Energy Management In-home Energy Monitors To date, 14,581 in-home energy monitors have been registered via the Smart Meter Texas web portal Studies have shown that when customers are provided energy-use information they can help save 10-15% Smart Thermostats Retail energy providers in ERCOT also offer thermostats to help customers manage their energy use 10
Energy Efficiency From , Oncor spent more than $300 million on energy efficiency programs, which reduced: More than 485 MW of peak demand More than million MWhs Annual greenhouse gas equivalent of removing 180,501 cars from Texas roads Take a Load Off, Texas reached more than 4 million customers and more than 130,000 students through our 6 th grade curriculum program 11
Energy Efficiency In Action: Lady Bird Johnson Middle School (Irving, TX) Oncor worked with school administrators to create the largest Net Zero middle school in the U.S., producing more energy than it consumes through energy efficiency technologies and renewable power generation. Results have included: Solar Photovoltaic Roof Units 474 kw 913,133 kwh for $700,391 Efficient Lighting 23 kw 108,400 kwh for $9,202 Geothermal Units 68 kw 117,984 kwh for $28,558 12
Next Generation Resources for a Next Generation Grid Visionary Intelligent Communicative Flexible and Adaptive Team-Oriented Politically Savvy Results Driven SAFE! 13
