Gas Station Recycling A New Partnership Model to Increase Convenience Store Recycling Keep America Beautiful Workshop Carolina Recycling Association Annual Conference March 27, 2017
Away From Home Recycling Great potential for recovery of bottles and cans 30-40% of PET bottles and as much as half of aluminum cans are consumed outside of the home Convenience increases participation Big Picture: Create TWINNED BIN access
Plastic Bottle Recovery NC Plas(c Bo,le Recycling Capacity In Millions of Lbs 72,010, ,990,000 Material Received from North Carolina Material Received from Other States
Market Demand for Material
Impact of AFH Recycling Conducted an NC AFH assessment 2014/15 What would it cost for a fully twinned system? How much of that infrastructure is already developed? Findings $38 million to pair all waste and recycling containers (assuming no existing infrastructure) At least $30 million in public and private funds still needed Gas stations, pedestrian, transit, parks and sports fields were less developed. Revisited in 2016: growth in pedestrian, park and sports fields. $2 million reduction in infrastructure needs.
Impact of Gas Stations Largely undeveloped infrastructure Assuming 4500 NC stations $9 million investment needed Over 10 million pounds of recyclables a year
2013 KNCB & DEACS Pilot Partnership between KNCB, DEACS, Han-Dee Hugo s, Waste Industries With proper bins and signage, there were no contamination or service issues. Apex, NC Han-Dee Hugo s location diverted roughly 23,000 bottles and cans in a year. Project highlighted industry barriers to implementing recycling Perception of burden on staff Cost Branding issues/corporate
NC Convenience Store Program
Orange County, NC
Greensboro, NC 2016 Project Targeted gas stations on commercial route w/commingled dumpsters 8 of 35 eligible stations said yes Familiar barriers Corporate Approval Branding/display & liability concerns Other challenges: use of bags, maintenance of bins, some contamination
Sheetz Corporate commitment to recycling In chainwide recycling after pilot 352 of 511 stores 52 of 80 NC stores Aim is 100% of stores with access to commingled collection
It works, so how do we grow this? Projects have demonstrated gas station recycling works and collects A LOT of materials Also, some BMPs (bottles/cans collection only, type and placement of containers) Projects have identified some key barriers Independent stores can say yes easily, but Corporate approval process is difficult Communication channels can be diffuse and rules hard to understand Cost will always be an issue, but when no-cost solutions are presented approval is still not guaranteed. How to we get more brand owners on board? Try new types of partners!
