3 About Waste Transfer Stations in general Waste Transfer Stations (WTS) are basically introduced within areas where long haul of waste loads by Collection Trucks becomes uneconomical. Acting as hubs for local waste collection routes, WTSs receive waste from individual smaller Collection Trucks and transfer the compacted waste with Transfer Trucks in large Containers. 4 About Waste Transfer Stations in general There are 2 types of Heavy Duty Waste Transfer Stations : 1. The Horizontal operating type, 2. The Vertical operating type. MBPP chose to implement the Vertical operating type for Batu Maung.

5 About Waste Transfer Stations in general The Vertical WTS operates with 2 different waste transfers: Direct with rigid Truck (15 ton payload): Indirect with PM& Trailer (24-26 ton payload). MBPP has chosen this option:

6 Some Background for the new Batu Maung WTS Initially both MPSP and MBPP had their own Waste Transfer Station in Seberang Perai ( land mode) and Batu Maung (using barge transfer) respectively. As of 2011, due to contraint in land availability, the Ampang Jajar Transfer Station was used to serve both MBPP & MPSP. Present Capacity is 1100 tons per day, running 24 hour shifts 7 days a week. Running a Transfer Station for 24/7 is not ideal. Therefore plans were made for MBPP to have their own station in Batu Maung on Penang Island.

8 PRESENT PLANS The New MBPP Waste Transfer Station is being developed and the EIA for the facility has been approved. Target Opening Date for the station is 1 April The new station will have a capacity of 800 tons per day, expandable by up to 25%.

9 Future Plans Based on the local authorities present programs, waste separation at source shall be carried out. The coming Batu Maung waste transfer station is therefore designed so that Waste-To-Energy can be implemented after the right waste to energy, i.e. biogas-technology, has been sourced. Biogas can be produced from waste fractions such as agricultural waste, manure, sewage sludge, green waste and food waste. These waste fractions can be used as resources, resulting in further costs savings and in a certain percentage of waste being diverted from the landfill.

14 The Compactor The Compactor weights approx. 6.5 tons and presses with 30 tons. Compaction rate varies depending of waste composition.
