THE SECOND PENANG BRIDGE - What are the key environmental concerns? - What are the sensitive receptors? - Why do we monitor? (where, when, what, frequency)
THE SECOND PENANG BRIDGE ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS: - IMPACTS MARINE WATER QUALITY - IMPACTS TO MARINE ECOLOGY AND FISHERIES ACTIVIES
Construction Phase Dredging & Piling Activities Disposal of Dredged Materials Potential Impacts: Marine water quality - High total suspended solids (TSS), turbidity and sedimentation in the water column Marine life and resources - potential decrease in marine fish landing and aquaculture production Potential Impacts: Marine water quality - high total suspended solids (TSS), turbidity and sedimentation in the water column. Marine life and resources - potential decrease in marine fish landing and aquaculture productions
Sensitive Receptors Sensitive Receptors: Fisheries and aquaculture areas areas at Pulau Aman, Sg Jejawi, Sg Udang and Sg Kerian Corals Mangroves along the coastline, particularly at river mouths Batu Maung Batu Kawan aquaculture
THE SECOND PENANG BRIDGE ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING & AUDIT : - WATER QUALITY (MARINE AND RIVER) - FISHERIES IMPACT ASSESSMENT MONITORING - COMPLIANCE TO DOE REQUIREMENTS - IMPLEMENTATION OF MITIGATING MEASURES
THE SECOND PENANG BRIDGE WATER QUALITY MONITORING (MARINE AND RIVER) PICTURE OF MEETING
Environmental Monitoring for Package 1
Marine Water Sampling Locations (Disposal Site & Along Transportation Route) 4 stations (monthly) (WQ) 4 stations along the transportation route (quarterly) (TW)
TSS level at WQ2 (April 2009 September 2012)
TSS level at WQ3 (April 2009 September 2012)
TSS level at WQ4 (April 2009 September 2012)
Water Quality Sampling Results (over 3 years) TSS within the baseline limit for the period of 3 years except for few months Online web tracking records showed that there was no illegal dumping of dredged material during transportation

THE SECOND PENANG BRIDGE FISHERIES IMPACT ASSESSMENT MONITORING
Water Quality Macrobenthos Coral Reef Fisheries Impact Assessment Fisheries Aquaculture
FISHERIES IMPACT ASSESSMENT Water Quality Assessment (Bimonthly) 12 sampling points (In-situ and Ex-situ) Compared against: Marine Water Quality Criteria and Standards for Malaysia ASEAN Marine Water Quality Criteria Various published water quality limits for aquatic environment Focus :- parameters related to aquatic ecological health Sampling points located close to major habitats, fishing grounds and aquaculture areas
Water Quality & Macro-benthos Sampling Points
FISHERIES IMPACT ASSESSMENT Macro-benthos Assessment (Quarterly) Method based on APHA (2005) Collection of sediment samples at 12 sampling points
FISHERIES IMPACT ASSESSMENT Coral Reef Assessment (Quarterly) 4 diving sites at Pulau Perjudi Using line transect method
Fisheries Assessment (Quarterly) 5 areas FISHERIES IMPACT ASSESSMENT Data collection via: Interviews with selected fishermen Data from the DoF & PNK
FISHERIES IMPACT ASSESSMENT Cockle Biomass Assessment 2 sites Collection of cockle length and weight to Indicate their size Estimate their production Sg. Jejawi Sg. Kerian
Aquaculture Assessment 4 areas FISHERIES IMPACT ASSESSMENT Data collection via: Interviews with selected cage culture operators & cockle farmers Data from the DoF & PNK
Fisheries Impact Assessment Monitoring Results Cockle biomass: The value obtained at S1 and S2 during 2 nd 10 th monitoring ranged from tonnes/ha. Marine capture fisheries: During 2 nd 10 th monitoring, total catch at the landing points ranged from tonnes/month. Aquaculture: The marine cage culture production ranged from kg/m 2 in 2 nd 10 th monitoring.
Fisheries Impact Assessment Monitoring Results Macrobenthos: Average density during 2 nd 10 th monitoring ranged from ind./m 2. Annelida was the most common dominant phylum Coral reef: A total of 29 species have been identified throughout most of the monitoring period. Most abundant species were Star Coral (Favites sp.), Anemone Coral (Goniopora sp.) and Boulder-shaped Coral (Porites sp.)
Fisheries Impact Assessment Monitoring Results Where seabed productivity (macrobenthos) was concerned, the area still provide food resources for fish and supported nutrient cycling
