Waste & Energy
Riverside Resources Recovery Facility Belvedere London RRRL Cory Environmental Race Cottam Associates were appointed by Cory Environmental s Riverside Resource Recovery Ltd s subsidiary to assist in the delivery of the high profile Belvedere scheme. After 14 years of planning and 3 public enquiries Race Cottam worked with the client, engineers Fichtner, and process contractor, Von Roll Inova to ensure that the design concept was achievable and practical. Race Cottam successfully developed relationships with key stakeholders, notably the Local Planning Authority, developing strategies and Design Guides for the scheme sufficient to enable key planning constraints to be discharged. cory environmental The 250 million incinerator is on brownfield land bank of the Thames, and will burn up to 670,000 tonnes of waste a year for 30 years. This unrecycled waste will be used as a fuel to generate 66MW of electricity sufficient to meet the needs of 66,000 homes. At present the residual waste from these London customers is transported by Cory down the Thames by tug and barge to its Mucking landfill site in Essex. Construction work began on site in late 2008 and the plant is scheduled for completion and operation in late Project Value 250 million
Hull & East Riding Target 45+ Saltend, Hull saltend Race Cottam were appointed by WRG to prepare architectural designs to assist in their bid to Hull City Council and the East Riding of Yorkshire. Following the success of the bid Race Cottam prepared a detailed architectural solution and planning information. Planning Approval was granted in 2007 with Race Cottam now appointed by BamNuttall to prepare full construction details for the building envelope. Located to the east of Hull on the north bank of the Humber estuary this new waste recycling and energy recovery scheme will become a major landmark both for Hull and North Lincolnshire from ships approaching the port of Hull. The scheme will recycle up to 38,000 tonnes a year of paper, metal and glass for reprocessing and recover energy from 240,000 tonnes of rubbish remaining after processing; enough energy to power the equivalent of 30,000 homes. Race Cottam developed the architectural designs and visual impact study for inclusion in a full Environmental Impact Assessment, in conjunction with Europe s leading waste equipment designers, key stakeholders, Hull City Council and The East Riding of Yorkshire. The scheme was granted full Planning Approval in The scheme is made up of an Energy from Waste building where residual waste is delivered and treated to release heat and steam to generate electricity via a turbine, a large bulking and sorting facility where recyclates are removed from general waste, and an administration building that will include an educational visitor centre. Construction is due to commence on site in 2009 Building Value 30 million
FCC Projects UK Somercotes, North Derbyshire Race Cottam Associates were appointed to prepare concept designs and architectural information in support of FCC Projects bid to develop an 250 ktpa energy from waste facility at its existing waste transfer and composting facility at Somercotes, North Derbyshire. Located close to the A38 & M1 this new facility would serve north and central Derbyshire. The steeply sloping site and its proximity to the East Midlands mainline demanded an innovative approach. Race Cottam developed a design that utilised the slope to provide a raised tipping hall but provided a secondary lower route for all other vehicle movements. The single stream plant has been designed so that the visual impact to the nearest key receptors has been reduced through the architectural concepts of a curved roof profile and narrow building mass. somercotes green energy park Project Value 25 million
Water
Welsh Water (Dwr Cymru) North Wales Race Cottam have developed schemes for drinking water treatment and waste water treatment across north Wales for Welsh Water (Dwr Cymru). Sited in environmentally and visually sensitive locations all the schemes required comprehensive design and planning application packages including landscape, ecological, acoustic and archaeological appraisals. Two major projects for Dwr Cymru are the Bryn Cowlyd Water Treatment Works located on the edge of the Snowdonia National Park where gravity is used to feed the raw water through activated carbon treatment process. This scheme was awarded a Civic Trust Award. Ganol Waste Treatment Works is a major waste water treatment works for the Conwy, Colwyn Bay and north Wales coastline. Sited on a landmark site adjacent to the A55 trunk road, Race Cottam designed a scheme that rationalised the process design into a coherent arrangement of structures using local materials to visually locate the architectural treatment to this estuarine environment. ganol sewerage treatment Project Value 57 million
Wessex Water Exmoor Faber Maunsell Race Cottam Associates were appointed by Wessex Water to develop architectural designs for a strategic drinking water scheme at their existing site near Taunton. The site located on the edge of Exmoor required a comprehensive design approach by Race Cottam. Working in conjunction with Landscape Architect, ecologist, horticulturist and highways engineer, Race Cottam developed an innovative design for the structures. A sustainable approach was promoted with the client and key stakeholders which resulted in a 60,000 ft2 green roof, solar hot water systems, biomass boiler that used waste from other Wessex Water sites and a turbine on the main water supply to the facility. maundown wtw Race Cottam developed positive relationships with key stakeholders and presented the scheme through exhibition and leaflet drops. After the granting of planning approval in 2005 Race Cottam were appointed by Faber Maunsell and Enpure to provide architectural services for the delivery of the scheme. The scheme is due to complete in Project Value 25 million
