THANKS!
Funded by the European Commission Under the 5 th framework program Key Action 3: Sustainable Marine Ecosystems. Priority: Coastal monitoring processes September November 2004
The problem addressed The increased frequency of Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) in the near coastal waters as the possible consequence of anthropogenic activities. One of the main risks of coastal regions on a world scale, and specifically along the Mediterranean coastline
The problem addressed The program is centred in the genus Alexandrium and is focused mainly through in situ studies in the North Mediterranean basin
The genus Alexandrium The genus Alexandrium is the group of dinoflagellates which proportionally cause most HAB, in the Mediterranean Sea. This genus includes species which causes PSP (paralityc shellfish poisoning). From this stems its importance and problematic nature.
The genus Alexandrium The risk of intoxication in areas not subject to controlled Legislation of aquaculture activities (91/492/CEE) Some species of the genus can produce and maintain elevated biomass causing an evident deterioration in the quality of water for recreational uses.
The Mediterranean Sea Supports the highest population of the European Seas. 360 million inhabitants in the coastal area. 500 million in 2025 (EEA) The most exploited sea in terms of leisure activities. A significant economic source depends on the tourist industry and related enterprises
The Mediterranean Sea The STRATEGY regions have a common characteristic: the exploitation of the coastal zone for recreational use, with important highly established tourist industries or plans for development for the near future. They also share the same concern for conserving the quality of near-shore waters Blooms are recurrent and frequently cause public health, economic, and social problems

WP Scheme
Objectives 1. To develop a new monitoring strategy associated with confined areas of high-risk occurrence in several regions that share the same problem and concern about the quality of coastal waters. 2. To formulate principles that explain similarities between ecosystems affected by the same HAB events To determine the role of man-made structures in the expansion and diversification of Alexandrium. 3. To Establish the basis to an integrated coastal zone management in relationship with the coastal recreational waters by promoting effective communication and active participation of all the players involved.
Work plan The Town Council of Calvià (as an example of those affected) will to organise jointly with the STRATEGY group the STRATEGY End Users Meeting Attended by the components of the EUGS and responsible for the monitoring of other regions in the Mediterranean and other entities interested in the results of the project
