2 The Testing Research & Standards Center (TRSC) is a Support Unit that belongs to the Support Operations Division of the Public Power Corporation (PPC) S.A. Greece. TRSC hosts the central labs and the research centre of PPC S.A. Group. Its activities include the provision of services not only to the units of PPC Group but also to third parties (like the wider Public Sector, local and foreign Industries and craft industries).

3 TRSC services include: tests in its laboratories research accreditations inspections in the areas of PPC Group instrument calibration specialised studies applications and analyses specialised consultation studies inspections for quality control of existing and under purchasing PPC equipment.

4 TRSC Labs can perform about 600 different tests according to European and International standards. TRSC Labs are accredited by the Hellenic Accreditation System (E.SY.D) according to ISO and ISO standards. ESYD is a founding member of the European co-operation for Accreditation (EA). TRSC employs high-calibre scientific staff, mainly coming from the Engineering and Exact Sciences, along with the relevant technicians. 14 of TRSC staff-members (which corresponds to 15% of its staff) hold a PhD Degree in Science and Engineering.

5 TRSC has 14 well-equipped labs divided in 4 groups: A. Electrical Group (4 Labs) B. Mechanical & Metallourgy Group (3 Labs) C. Chemistry Group (3 Labs) D. Civil Engineering Group (2 Labs) E. Independent Labs (Photometry and Rising Temperature)

6 A. Electrical Group Labs 1. High Power Lab (unique in Greece) Performs Short Circuit tests, breaking capacity and interrupting performance tests on a variety of items (power, voltage and current transformers, switchgear, controlgear, cables, earthing equipment, fuses, relays etc) using a specially designed Surge-Power Generator 400 MVA 24 kv 9,6 ka. 2. High Voltage & Dielectric Testing Lab Performs Dielectric Tests in High Voltage, Medium Voltage and Low Voltage Electrical Materials. Main tests include: Lightning Impulse Voltage tests, Power frequency voltage tests up to 300kV under dry or wet conditions, Dielectric tests at variable humidity and temperature, under water immersion and under pollution, Direct current tests up to 200kV and induced voltage tests (200Hz) up to 1kV, Partial discharges, radio interference voltage, power loss, tanδ, capacitance measurements etc.

Electrical Tests and Measurements Lab Performs numerous tests and measurements in Medium Voltage and Low Voltage Electrical Materials including: Tests on Low Voltage electrical equipment (fuses, fuse bases, metering boxes, junction boxes, fuse boxes, relays, etc.). Tests of tripping characteristic of micro circuit breaker. Degree of Protection (IP) code: any material Capacity check of lead-acid batteries. All kinds of electrical measurements (electrical resistance, voltage, power, resistance, Insulating properties tests, conductivity, etc.) Earthing resistance measurements. Electrical aging tests to LV components. 4. Metrology Lab Performs calibration in electric quantities: AC Voltage, AC Current, DC Voltage, DC Current, DC resistance, Megohm meters, Grounding measures, Shunts, etc.

8 B. Mechanical & Metallourgy Group Labs 1. Metallography Lab Conducts: Microstructure characterization Steel identification (in combination with chemical analyses and mechanical properties studies) Image analysis (eg grain size, phase fraction and particle size measurements) Creep stage evaluation (long-time experience from power plant materials, creep evaluation constitutes a major area of expertise). Macro-structure characterization (eg. forging and extrusion products) Failure analysis studies.

9 2. Applied Physics Lab Its highly trained and certified by ISO 9712, PCN, SNT-TC-1A staff with many years of experience and expertise perform: I. Non-destructive testing (NDT): Visual inspection Liquid penetrant testing Magnetic particle inspection Industrial radiography Ultrasonic testing Eddy current testing Ultrasonic thickness measurement Infrared thermography

Rubber physical properties: Specific gravity / Density Abrasion resistance Determination of indentation hardness Rebound resilience of rubber IV. Porosity test on porcelain insulators

Mechanical Testing Lab It performs Destructive Tests like: Tensile tests in metallic and plastic specimens Bending tests in metallic and plastic specimens Impact tests in metallic and plastic specimens Compression tests in metallic and plastic specimens Hydraulic tests in vessels under pressure, pumps e.t.c.

12 1. Analytical Chemistry Lab C. Chemistry Group It conducts elemental analyses in waters, wastewaters, solid wastes, lignites, ashes, soils. It particulates matter collected from ambient air and alloys. It determines metals in liquid fuels and lubricants.

13 2. Fuels and Lubricants Lab Carries out quality control analysis on fuel oil (heavy fuel and diesel oil). Performs physicochemical characteristics analysis on industrial lubricating oils (turbine, hydraulic systems, gearbox, internal combustion engine oils, etc.) and grease.

14 3. Laboratory of Environmental Chemistry and Special Materials. It conducts: physicochemical analyses of water, wastewater and eluates of ashes, sludges and soils. tests on materials of electrical and industrial equipment (corrosion and aging tests, tests on coatings e.t.c.)

15 D. Civil Engineering Group 1. Concrete Lab Provides support concerning the conformity of structure materials in civil works: aggregates, cement, concrete, grout, flying ashes. Covers concrete and durability technology issues that determine the quality of modern construction (special concretes, special materials such as refractory materials, bentonites, etc.).

16 2. Soil Mechanics Lab. It performs the following types of tests: Soil classification tests (moisture content, particle size sieve analysis, particle size analysis using hydrometer, Atterberg limits, specific gravity) Soil mechanical tests (unconfined compression tests, triaxial tests, direct shear tests, residual shear strength with the ring shear apparatus, consolidation tests, etc.) Soil compaction tests (standard and modified Proctor, California Bearing Ratio CBR)

17 E. Independent Labs 1. The Rising Temperature Lab Conducts rising temperature tests of various types of equipment (eg transformers, switch & control gears, disconnectors, suspension clumps etc) with electric currents up to several ka. 2. The Photometry Lab Undertakes the detection and verification of phototechnical characteristics in all kinds of lamps and luminaries. Carries out on-site measurements of luminaries phototechnical result. Undertakes the phototechnical studies and research of indoor and outdoor areas aiming at energy saving and rational use of lighting according to international standards.

18 Research at TRSC TRSC participates in various research projects funded by national and european sources (eg Horizon 2020). Currrent Research Projects include: The development of new ultra sound techniques for NDT s. Bioengineering in bacteria which can turn CO2 to biodiesel and other useful chemicals. Ceramic coatings on critical parts facing high thermal and mechanical strain. Studies on the effects of solar activity onto power grids.

19 Research at TRSC (continued) Research at TRSC covers also more mathematically oriented topics like: Generalisations of the Stone-Weierstrass theorem (Zois,,I.P.: «Orthogonal polynomial algebras which are dense in the algebra of continuous functions on a manifold», Jour. K-Theory, 17.4, 2015). New quantum invariants on low dimensional manifolds (Zois, I.P.: «Noncommutative Topological Quantum Field Theories on 3-manifolds», Commun. Math. Phys , 2016).

20 The mother company PPC S.A. Greece: PPC was established in 1950 and it is the largest electricity producer and supplier in Greece (in fact PPC is the largest corporation in the country). It owns and operates lignite mines, steam electric plants (using lignite, natural gas and diesel as fuel) along with hydroelectric power plants, wind parks, photovoltaic parks and other clean energy production methods like biomass, geothermal energy etc.
