Heat pump information system for the federal state of Salzburg DORFINGER, NORBERT SALZBURG AG , GRETA Midterm Conference, NH Hotel City Salzburg
Salzburg AG
Heat pump information system Salzburg Federal state of Salzburg facts Size km² (AUT km²) Inhabitants (AUT 8.7 Mio) Highest peak 3662 m (AUT 3798 m) Lowest point 403 m (AUT 114 m) NSGE installations in Austria Groundwater use Borehole heat exchangers Registered heat pumps [without air HP] BHE (AUT ) GWHP (AUT ) Total number estimated: ground sourced HPs, air sourced HPs in Austria
Heat Pump Market in Austria Brine/water Water/water Air/water Air/air Direct evaporation
Heat pump information system Aims of the project To provide a decision support tool, showing the suitability for the wide range of heat pump systems water/water HPs, brine/water HPs and air/water HPs for: installers and planners administration employees end users Project runtime - phase I [preliminary studies, concept, realization] April 2015 April 2017 Project finances External costs: approx EUR Partners 1. Government of the federal state of Salzburg 2. Geoconsult ZT GmbH, Geological Survey of Austria 3. Association of sanitary-, heating- and ventilation technicians 4. Salzburg AG (energy supplier)
Application of the web tool Step 1 choose Section Heat Pumps Step 2 Click on location using the query tool Choose a location via clicking on the map generates a.pdf file Generated.pdf explains the estimated potential for HPs on the spot exclusion- and assessment criteria, potentials & additional information (processing server based within the GIS system of the federal state SAGIS ) Direct information for the end user display of layers, documentation of all provided information incl. further literature etc.
Application of the web tool Step 3 wait Step 4 choose link Step 5 done! Step 6 read add. Information & documentation
How does it work? Processing server Exclusion criteria - 4 maps 25m radius around wells, evaporites, active landslide areas, water protection zone 1+2 Assessment criteria - 16 maps water protection areas, mining areas, confined aquifers, mass movements, contaminated sites etc. Potentials - 5 maps BHE: mean ground temperature, mean thermal conductivity GWHP: hydraulic potential, technical potential, thermal potential
Example city of Salzburg
Example city of Salzburg Water/Water HP Suitability for the construction of a water/water HP: More detailed evaluation necessary: drinking water supply within 250 m radius For the following reasons a more detailed evaluation is necessary: At least one drinking water supply system is located in a radius of 250 m. Layers: wells, springs This land is situated in an area with potential risk of flooding, in danger zones defined by the engineering administration at the ministry of life and/or designated flooding areas (HQ30, HQ100). Layers: danger zones defined by the engineering administration at the ministry of life, blue/brown/violet identified zones, red/yellow zone for wild streams, flooding areas HQ30, HQ100 More detailed evaluation necessary: flooding area
Example city of Salzburg Water/Water HP The following potentials were determined: Thermal component potential According to the geological-hydrological classification, the thermal component potential for GWHPs indicates a temperature spreading of 2,5 5 C Layer: thermal component potential Hydraulic component potential According to the geological-hydrological classification, the hydraulic component potential is >20 l/s. Layer: hydraulic component potential Authorized plants The median of the maximum consent of granted water permits for water/water HP plants in this aquifer is 0,5 1 l/s. Layer: consents of granted water permits Technical potential The calculated technical potential for water/water HPs is >50 kw Layer: technical potential Thermal potential [ C] Hydraulic potential [l/s] Granted water permits [l/s] Technical potential [l/s]
Example city of Salzburg Brine/Water HP Suitability for the construction of a brine/water HP (BHE): For the following reasons a more detailed evaluation is necessary: Due to the geological situation, the presence of multiple aquifer formations can not be excluded. Layers: multiple aquifer formation Due to the geological situation, the presence of confined or artesian aquifers can not be excluded. Layers: confined/artesian aquifers Multiple aquifer formation Confined/ artesian aquifer At least one drinking water supply system is located in a radius of 250 m. Layers: wells, springs The following potentials were determined: Ground temperature The calculated mean ground temperature in 50 cm depth is > 10 C. Layer: mean ground temperature Thermal conductivity The calculated mean thermal conductivity value for the first 100 m underground is 2.1 W/m/K Layer: thermal conductivity Mean ground temperature [ C] Thermal conductivity [W/m/K]
Conclusions and outlook Feedback Works good! Ground water depth would be fine A map with energy infrastructure in addition (what is the most appropriate energy supply solution?) Location requests About 10 per day Phase II of the project? See feedback
