Airport Sustainability Airport sustainability practice is a broad term that encompasses a wide variety of practices applicable to the management of airports. The term refers to practices that ensure: Protection of the environment, including conservation of natural resources. Social progress that recognizes the needs of all stakeholders. Maintenance of high and stable levels of economic growth and employment These three components of sustainable development are often referred to as the environmental, social, and economic triple bottom line. Reference: ACRP,

Policy Statement Development Defined by top management Appropriate to the nature, scale, and impacts of the activities, products, services Commitment to continual improvement and prevention of pollution Commitment to comply with legislation, regulations, and other requirements Framework for objectives and targets Documented, implemented, maintained, communicated to all employees Available to the public
Ranking Aspects and Impacts Identify operations and related activities List the aspects (of each activity with impacts) Define the impacts (changes to the environment) Rank the impacts Do a reality-check of the ranking (Do they make sense? Can we control them?) Develop an action plan to address each of the topranked impacts
Action Plans Established objectives and targets based on current operations Set achievable targets so progress could be demonstrated Will raise the bar later as part of continual improvement Assigned responsibilities and milestones for completion
SNA s Highest Ranked Impacts Operation of terminal buildings Heating and cooling terminal buildings Fuel sumping by General Aviation (GA) Providing emergency power to terminals Runway cleaning General aviation aircraft washing Operation of SNAFUEL and other fueling tanks Operating terminal buildings
