1 Copernicus for ecosystem assessment and mapping Cristian MOISE / Alexandru BADEA / Florian BODESCU / Ion NEDELCU ROMANIAN SPACE AGENCY Context Conceptual framework for EU wide ecosystem assessment Action 5 of the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2020 calls Member States to map and assess the state of ecosystems and their services in their national territory with the assistance of the European Commission The mapping and assessment of ecosystems and their services is a necessary condition to use ecosystems and their services as key parameters for informing, planning, develop processes and decision making. 1
2 MAES process in Romania (Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystems and their Services) Actual state of MAES process Implemented national projects: EEA grants -Biodiversity and ecosystem services RO02 Implemented European partnership projects: OPERAs openness ESMERALDA OPENESS/ OPERA ESMERALDA EEA grants Biodiversity and ecosystem services MAES process in Romania EEA grants - Biodiversity and ecosystem services RO02 pre-defined project Demonstrating and promoting natural values in support of decision-making processes in Romania (N4D) Feb Apr Project activities are implemented by: 1. National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA) 2. Romanian Space Agency (ROSA) 3. WWF-Romania (WWF) 4. Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA) Main activities : Elaboration of mapping and assessment frameworks and procedures as basis to perform MAES in Romania Data management and data analysis for the MAES process Mapping and biophysical assessment of selected ecosystems 2

6 Decision Support System (DSS) - Provide access to a set of tools allowing simplified as well as complex analysis in by means of standard GIS interface and predefined reports; - Use thematic and reference data published as web services(ogc Compliant) by mandated organizations participating in the National SDI; - Core information represented by the Country Location and Assessment Maps developed in the N4D project - Architecture and technology enabling further extension and scaling given considering existing and future categories of users Decision Support System (DSS) 6
7 Draft conclusions - The link between science and policy should be strengthened and more support provided to policy-relevant research. - Data sharing capabilities need to be enhanced in Europe and in particular, data coming from long-term ecological research sites. - Several conceptual issues remain unresolved and require dedicated action: - the typology of marine ecosystems of Black Sea - which not have a direct correspondence in EUNIS typology - the role of agro-ecosystems in delivering provisioning ecosystem services in relation to energy inputs that are required to harvest agricultural products. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION! 7
