18 Highlights Portland, OR Piloted SSO in 2010, citywide (345,000 single-family hh) in 2011 With citywide rollout, switched to bi-weekly garbage collection (with PAYT option for monthly and on-call service) Certified compostable bags promoted First year results: Participation: 84% green cart at curb; 78% carts had food waste Residential diversion: 70% (45% food waste capture rate)

19 Italy Intensive Source Separated Organics (ISSO) Maximize organics diversion from landfill Reduce food scraps in trash to less than 10% 3,000 municipalities (out of 8,000) have SSO Average of 116 kg/inhabitant/year organics (food waste only 79 kg) About 300 composting facilities 100 are over 10,000 t/yr and accepting residential food waste About 15 AD facilities accepting food waste in compostable bags In 2011, national ban on single-use PE shopping bags (exempting certified compostable) Linked with EU and national waste diversion targets Helped keep average contamination below 5%

Small curbside bin just for food waste Organics collection 1-2 per week; trash typically biweekly (to achieve high capture rates) 4. Processing (composting and/or anaerobic digestion). 3. Small collection vehicles (w/o compaction) haul the organics to transfer stations

21 Milan, Italy SSO started in Fall 2012, rolled out by city quarter Currently 340,000 households with service (1/2 of city) More than 80% multi-family buildings, food waste only Starter kit: vented kitchen pail, 25 Mater-Bi bags, flyer Average 90kg food waste/inhab/year No yard trimmings or nappies, contamination <5% Sent to AD, followed by composting

24 Conclusion: Compostable Plastics Are A Tool To Increase Organics Diversion The U.S. and Canada are still landfilling the majority of our organics Compostable plastics are a tool for increasing diversion of organic waste in both residential and commercial sectors We need to continue to grow the composting industry New composting programs More composting and AD infrastructure Improve diversion in existing programs Compostable bags, kitchen pails, collection frequency, PAYT, etc. Laws that support/mandate organic waste collection, along with the use of compostable plastics
